Starving Students Movers 1

I had a signed contract with them one month before my move. Two days before my move, they called and left a message on my machine saying they had run out of trucks in the Denver area and couldn't move me anymore . . sorry. If I had done the same thing, they would have charged me anyways because of the contract. I angerly called around before finally getting a supervisor, and magically a truck became available. When the movers came, two out of the three looked like they were right out of high school, and acted as such. My supplies arrived 7 days later than verbally estimated to me. Ever since, I have used Mayflower. Pay more. . . you get what you pay for.

We paid for three movers, one of which started complaining that he didn't want to be there as soon as they showed up. They loaded the truck and then had to drop him off as he didn't want to stick around. They took a corner too fast and everything in the truck was sitting diagonal when they arrived at our house. Some boxes looked like they had been shipped through USPS they were so beat up. A number of things were broken, even ones that had been professionally packed and the wooden furniture was scrapped up some because they didn't use the furniture padding correctly. Thankfully we had moved all the breakables that I cared a lot about ourselves beforehand. Overall, I wasn't really happy about how things played out.

I had the unfortunate experience of working with these dishonest schmucks back in '99. Same old story: I was overcharged; they gave me a price and I ended up paying several hundred dollars more than what was on the invoice. Part of the additional charges came as a result of their getting "lost" and taking at least an hour longer than necessary to get to our place. I'm sorry, but you can't charge customers for your own imcompetence. Of course, things got damaged and the two guys they sent seemed tired and uninterested in doing a decent job. Repeated attempts to get our money back went unanswered, until we finally had the BBB intervene. Only then did Starving Students grudgingly offer to pay us about half what they had overcharged us. We took the deal because it hadn't been a huge move, there wasn't that much money involved and, frankly, we were just plain tired of trying to deal with their non-existent customer service.

Anyway, this experience opened my eyes, and I started researching this company on the Web. As one reviewer already mentioned, Starving Students has an "F" rating from the BBB. Additionally, the State of Washington has levied numerous fines against the company for multiple violations of traffic, business, and other laws (over 200 last time I checked, which was about 5 years ago). Every consumer-review site on which this company is rated gives it abysmal marks for its woefully poor performance and lousy service.

I remember reading a while back that Starving Students had a new president, who basically admitted that the company had a lousy reputation, but that he was going to "fix it all" and regain consumer confidence. Well, based on what I still read to this day, that statement was obviously a load of BS. Please do yourself a favor: pay a little extra for the peace of mind you will have knowing you're not dealing with one of the worst companies ever. I can't believe they're still in business.

They were almost two hours late, didn't have correct information, damaged some of my things and had a sowhat attitude about it, didn't send three people as they should have, one took a lot of breaks and acted like he was clueless about his job, and I was overcharged.

The movers were a little slow, but I have a steep outside staircase that I think kicked their butts a little bit on a warm day. They showed up more or less on time, but got lost for a bit finding my place (I wasn't charged for that) and even wanted to come early which I was unable to do because the new apartment wasn't going to be ready until 5PM. They moved faster on the other end going into a ground floor apartment. Overall I was satisfied, though they did overcharge me $50 beyond what I was invoiced for. They are supposedly working on refunding that. As some have said on here, the movers they sent were thugs, but they were nice thugs. My two complaints are: 1) That they sent a trailer attached to a truck that was a nightmare to extract from my old apartments' narrow parking area. They should probably check with the customer to find out how narrow the parking driveway is before sending out that truck and trailer combo again. Fortunately they creditted me for the hour it took them to unwind that thing from the parking area. 2). They could have been a little speedier getting things out of the back bedroom where we wanted to stash our cats until the movers left. We ended up having to move a some heavy items into the living room ourselves. Overall though I'd say I was satisfied.

Despite the success of the company, I have a feeling it has outgrown its capacity to provide the service upon which it was founded. My movers showed up on time, but one of them was incompetent and the other told he he didn't even like the job. He mostly stood around. It was a tiny storage unit, which a disabled guy and I moved the stuff into, yet it took these guys forever to get it out. They did everything stupidly and inefficiently. They didn't know how to think. It was horrible, but after reading the other posts, I realize it could have been worse. At least no real valuables were lost or stolen, although they did break a cheap desk hutch. I will not use them for my next move.

They are a rip off. Very proffesional when initiating the pick-up date and goes an extra mile to assure you that they will move your stuff as safely and as quickly as possible. NOT TRUE!!! They took twice as long to move compared to the time that I spent moving a one bedroom furniture with the help of one friend. They also attempt to charge their break time. They round up the hour even though there is an extra 20 mins.

Not good and do not believe them.

Starving Students is the worst company I have ever dealt with. They did not show up on the scheduled day. After 8.5 hours of waiting and about 30 phone calls, I finally got ahold of someone who scheduled my move for the following day. The movers arrive 1.5 hours late on the second day, broke some of my dishes, scrapped up my kitchen table and damaged my box spring mattress. The crew quit before they were done. I was told I would get a discount for my troubles. I have called the office several times, but no one answers their phones.

They showed up ten hours late, wouldn't answer phone calls, the movers were lazy and sat around smoking and arguing and "rearranging" the truck.  They didn't finish in the quoted 3 or 4 hours and packed up our old apartment from 6pm until midnight and then wouldn't unpack the truck, claiming they were tired and would come back the next day.  That day is today and they are currently unpacking so I have no idea if anything is broken or stolen or what we're going to be charged because I am at work while my husband supervises the move.  I am VERY unhappy in DC!!!

This company has been sued many many times. If you have a real claim...sue them in small claims court. I was overcharged. They brought too small of a truck and tried to charge me for thier mistake. Lost items, broke items. They do not return phone calls. Stay away!!

Starving students is a mess! I had booked them for a Friday afternoon move and they failed to turn up. At that point (2 hours after they were to show up), I called their office in Seattle (Bellevue) and got their voicemail; by which time I was close to having a panic attack as I had to hand over my apartment the next day! So I called their 1-800 number instead (which is based some place in CA I think); they have the most incredibly lazy and dumb people manning the phones there!! Everytime I called, their totally brain dead staff would transfer my call to the voicemail of the Seattle office (this inspite of me telling them each time that the Seattle office seems to be closed, can you please help me?); I kid you not, 6 calls and each of them sent right back to the Seattle office!!
Finally after 4 hours of our appointed time somebody from the Seattle office calls to ask me if they can do our move first thing in the morning instead. I had no option at that time; I was just glad that they offered to do the move at all!!
They somewhat redeemed themselves the next day when a crew of 3 turned up at 8am in hte morning and very efficiently began to move my stuff. The crew was excellent!! They were done moving my apartment in 4 1/2 hours and everything reached in excellent condition. I was moving into a new house so they were considerate enough to put one of their blankets on the floor and wiped their feet on that before coming into the house.
They were totally professional, efficient and good natured. If this was based solely on the crew, I'd even rate them 5 stars; but the experience of dealing with their 'customer care' folks the day before and the anxiety filled few hours I had to spend were awful enough for me to rate them at 3 stars.

I guess I'm the latest victim. I was in such a rush to get all my moving details done, that I neglected doing my homework first and checking out these guys online. They seemed nice on the phone - but actual service was bad. They were slightly late. No harm done. But then they sent only two guys - one of which stayed to load the truck, so it was basically one person moving everything (including heavy items). Oh, and myself having to help them - of course. I'm sore all over. Walls got scratched, my furniture got heavily scratched and my couch cushion fell into motor oil on the ground. The guys worked hard - but way to slow. To move a studio's worth of stuff only 30 minutes away cost me $650. In the past, I never paid more than $400 including tip. Lesson learned.

The movers were very professional, nice and helpful. They moved boxes and furniture to different rooms between the three floors without any issue. My husband had to work that day, so he was not home to supervise. They made me feel very comfortable. All three were a delight to work with. I appreciated all they did to make the move go smoothly.

DO NOT USE! In Los Angeles, these guys are thugs. I am a woman-was moving by myself, and the 2 thugs they sent made inappropriate comments and made me feel threatened. Also, they wanted me to pay them in cash and tell the company I had canceled the move. I'm sure they would have just driven off with my stuff, and I'd never see it again. SCAM ARTISTS AND THIEVES!

These "movers" don't give a damn about you in any way! Don't use them. They hold you hostage with lies about when they are going to arrive. If they actually come, they arrive extremely late and exhausted from fitting in as many moves as they can BEFORE they get to you. They want your money and don't care about service or their customers. If you use them, you will be screwed, just like the rest of us who will NEVER use them again.

This was the worse moving experience ever! I have used movers for three moves and this one by far was the worse! They were early so that was good. But they did nothing to protect my furniture. They brought the blankets but did not use them. They wrapped my sofas in plastic but dragged the one end on the concrete which caused holes/rips on back corner. This happened to both couches. They layed my dining room table on its top in the truck and when they unloaded the table, they dragged it across the the truck and screw. There is now a 6-inch gouge on my dining room table. My chairs are scratched. They even ruined a particle board coffee table. How do you ruin particle board???? The truck was dirty and they used the base boards from my bed to line the truck. There was dirt and grass all over my stuff. To file a claim is a pain and they tried to offer me $150 for to settle without the claim. The local office I used is San Marcos, CA.

Avoid at all costs!!! Scheduled a move on Sunday morning 8-12 (the salesman suggested Sunday morning since the movers will be "fresh" compared to the Sat afternoon slot that was open). Starving Students never showed up. I had to call their office, and was told that NONE of their crew showed up for work and they couldn't get a hold of them on the phone. The office suggested that I "just postpone my move." However, they couldn't guarantee that they would show up even if I chose to reschedule!!!! Luckily, I found a local company in Philadelphia by the name of "H&M Movers" who were able to get 4 guys together in an hour and a half to do my move. H&M was fantastic! They were quick, professional, and nothing was damaged...cheaper rate too. Starving Students can die of hunger for all I care -- I will never, ever, consider them again.

They took more than 6 hours to move a 1 bR apt with not much stuff, and wasted so much time in the beginning complaining abt the staircase. Their corporate office is the WORST ever. Thankyou! I almost did a move with SS from california to florida. After this that move will not take place. Just another warning, there is acompany in San Diego, California called Move Plus that claims to have the cheapest rates--- that is all a con too. They gave me a quote for $1,500.00. by the time they showed up it went up to $3,500. They wanted to charge me for everything under the sun including tape at nearly $4 per roll. The movers and customer service were very rude and unprofessional. After I told them that I wasn't paying that and i cancelled the move they left my apartment in complete disarray. They took one of my sofa cushions and claimed not to have had it because the driver didn't want to turn around to return it. PLEASE DO NOT USE THEM THEY ARE JUST AS BAD AS SS.PLEASE DON NOT USE MOVE PLUS LOCATED IN SAN DIEGO, CA. OH! AND THE SUPPOSED FREE STORAGE THAT'S A LIE TOO.

I used them out of Tampa, worst experience EVER!! They showed up a day and a half late, with no reasons why.. after confirming morning before they would be there at 10 am.. Was from FL to NH. When they arrived, it was in a uhaul-different truck from the truck it wasnt to be moved in, everything was damaged, and my brand new big screen tv, microwave and mountain bike were all stolen from truck (admitted to by owner of company). This was in June 2004.. Im still waiting for my claim to be paid. We talk daily and they all know me by voice now.. Needless to say.. Im still waiting... Reported to FBI, DOT and Better Business Bureau, its not doing me to good.. they are out of Tampa/St Pete/Clearwater and New Orleans.. have many different names.. HEED THESE GUYS..If you call and they dont say company name.. Just hang up.. !!! I hope i can help just one person not use these guys, and live the hell ive been going through..Would love to hear from anyone else whose been burned by these guys (too old to be students..)!!

I used starving students for my last move in November of 2003. They were 2 hours late for their arrival. They brought wardrobe boxes per my requested, however the were broken and could not be used. They kept falling apart. As for the professionalism of the movers, well that is another thing. The movers kept disappearing. When I would go look for them they would be smoking or just sitting. The move was estimated to take 5 hours. They were there over 8 hours and the move was not completed. When I complained they said if I did not sign the release form they would just leave all my stuff exactly where it was. The movers also kept complaining about the work. Also, they broke two pieces of furniture and stated that they were not responsible. Anyway, I intend to do all that I can to keep other people from going through this horrible experience.

Horrible! Although the actual drivers did a fair job packing, they could not fit all of our items into their truck, since the truck they sent was smaller than what we had contracted for. We ended up having to rent a U-Haul for $900 and drive the 400+ miles ourselves just to take the overflow. Then the driver complained that he had been fined at the weight station and had to pay stiff fines, and obvious attempt to try to get a bigger tip. When they unloaded, they brought about 3 trips into the house and then got tired and left everything else in the garage for us to move ourselves. On top of everything, when I went back to Starving Students to try to get them to at least re-imburse half of my U-Haul expenses that I had incurred because of them, they have refused. Their claims agent, Curtis was rude, and I felt showed no concern for my position at all. Considering taking them to court, but not sure if it's worth my time. If anyone has had any satisfactory conflict resolutions with them, please e-mail me and let me know how you were able to deal with this company. ***********UPDATE: I recently received a call from Starving Students offering a compromise in re-imbursement of my expenses. Although it was far less than what I feel I was rightfully owed, it's worth it to be done with dealing with them. I will say that Mr. Enay, their claims director, showed a lot more empathy and professionalism in the late stages of my claim resolution. Honestly, I would still think more than twice before ever using this company again.

For the love of God, DO NOT USE THEM. They showed up for our move more than two hours late and worked very slowly. One guy barely left the truck - he was arranging it - so we had to help the other guy move everything. They were slow, unpleasant and rude. They ruined one of our night tables by putting tape directly on the surface. (We might have noticed, but we were too busy moving stuff.) The claims department is ridiculous and miserable to work with, especially Curtis Enay. He was very rude, did not care about our situation and is a complete a--hole. After this experience, we wished we had not hired movers and just did it all ourselves.

My only request was for them to pack up a large antique mirror, which I was assured they could do. The movers knew nothing of it and broke a piece off the mirror frame. They were patronizing and rude, and wouldn't unload the mirror off the truck till I paid in full. In addition, they charge double driving time, which was not explained. What a scam!!!

Don't use them! Gave me a four hour window between 8:00am-12:00. I kept calling and they never returned my calls. During the last call I was told they had my paperwork but I was never placed on the board. Therefore, no movers had been assigned to me. They showed up at 3:00pm and I sent them packing. Used another mover (and they were great)... I've tried to contact Starving Students Movers (company)in CA via email but to no avail. They don't give a dam/no response. Not a company to do business with! When I 1st called their 1800 number, the sales rep. was great-he sold me on the company! It's sad that the workers couldn't follow his lead...

A total scam all across the country. These guys aren't students. Most of these guys are hired straight off the streets in skid road type areas. My suggestion is getting all details in writing and signed before using them. Make them give you a flat rate if you have to use them. They will charge you more but then can't reneg on the deal. They also have a plethora of extraneous charges in their arsenal; bogus travel time, heavy object charges, stair charges, elevator charges, walking distance charges, etc. Also take the whole boat for insurance or you will be sorry. This company was almost thrown out in WA State. Only by paying huge fines did they keep their business there. Make sure you get copies of all invoices before and after the move. Also know that they cannot leagally hold your items for payment. Call the police as it is theft. Have your signed estimate out and waiting for when the police arrive, because if you use this company you will need them.

We just did an in-town move in Livermore, CA with the regional Sacramento-based Starving Students movers. Our basic complaint is that they keep some of your items on the truck, and say pay us or the stuff stays on the truck. Also, we were overcharged for time. At noon, when the move was very nearly complete, they charged us for stopping at 12:45 PM. We estimate that we were overcharged for 30 minutes. We were charged for time not used in our move. That is stealing. That is illegal. I will be contacting the BBB and CA attorney general. The movers themselves were decent but by far the least professional. Don't move anything you really care about with these guys.

We arranged a move through Starving Students six weeks in advance of our actual move. We confirmed one week before, one day before and the morning of the move. We HAD to be out of our house on the day of the move. Bottom line, they cancelled the move at the last minute because their guys were tired. In my opinion, they probably overschedule their movers and cherry pick the most lucrative moves. They are horrible, and the most unprofessional organization with whom we have had the displeasure of working. We did the move ourselves with the help of some very good friends. Do not use them ever!

Yikes, we sent them packing back to their planet and they were suppose to be at my house Sunday at 9am...well by noon no movers and when we finally tracked them down they had traveled 50 miles in the wrong direction..Should have stopped it then but...I will never use recommend or utter this company's name again NEVER

These guys were over a week late and lost a bunch of my stuff. They also said they lost the list of items I had sent, so I was sure they would have no way to deny my claim. WRONG! They denied it anyway. Luckily, I am an attorney, so I'm going to sue right away.

Do not use them! If you do it will be one of the worst days of your life! RUN!!! I have moved 37 times in my life and this ranked far and above the worst (including two overseas) of them all and I only moved only about 30 miles. I wish there was a rating of NO STARS as they don't even deserve the one for terrible.

My experience sucked. These guys are not students, more like con artists. One of the tricks these guys use is their old and slow trucks. That way they can double the driving time which takes SO LONG because of their worn-out trucks. They also showed up late which is another trick so that you will hit traffic on the way to your destination. They took over 14 hours to move my small ONE BEDROOM house!!! One of the movers was rude and took so long to move my furniture. There were times when I wondered where the movers were (they would be gone for 15-20 minutes at a time) and I figured they were organizing the truck. NOT! I checked out the truck before we headed out and those dudes threw my furniture in the truck sloppily and with no organization. Another trick is their time tracking which is confusing to say the least. It is so illegal how they calculate the time. I have disputed the entire bill and these guys will not cooperate and I have to take them to court. I would NEVER, NEVER use them again and would not recommend them. My advice would be to pick a more expensive mover with reliable, newer trucks and professional workers who do this for a living. It is worth it.

I hope all who read this heed to my warning!!! Last year my husband and I settled a huge lawsuit with them. And I mean huge. They basically shipped are belongs to FL, charged us triple the quote, put our things in storage when we could not pay, would not return our calls to clear it up, didn't pay the storage company, and everything was sold or stolen. When I say everything I mean everything, kids pictures, wedding pictures, electronics, etc. They do not respond to attorneys, complaints, they are rude and ignore even the Calif. PUC. Check their website they CA PUC has another hearing for them. WA already fined them like $600,000. Calif. is next!! BEWARE!!!

<<My Opinion only>> Theives, liars and felons. Of course this is only my opinion after experiencing the worst move of my life. Showed up late and without boxes. Left our home a shambles. Said it took one hour to drive less than 5 miles on a Sunday evening without traffic. I don't know what possessed me to do business with them but I have been exorcised. Please email me with any and all experiences as a CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT is contemplated.
