Awww, man! I WANTED to like these! I really did. The only problem is that I don't. As I've said in other posts, my cigarette of choice is the Camel Filter. This was (still is) MY cigarette, but I still like to explore every now and then. I've wanted to try American Spirit for a while now -- the whole ''Natural'' thing appealed to me -- so I picked up a pack today. I got the kind in the blue pack. I guess these would be called the ''Regulars''. Let me start off by saying that the inhale thru the filter is so hard! I felt like I was sucking my brains out just to get a decent amount of smoke. I got no buzz. I finally had enough and just broke off the filter. Yeah, I did get a little light in the head, but it wasn't what I would call a good buzz. There's no taste really either. Sort of like air.... or cardboard. I'm now left with a pack that I do not wish to smoke. What a waste of money. Yeah, they do seem to burn slower, but what's the good in that when they're not good? I guess it's back to my good old Camel Filters (I can't quit you). Later.

Most commercially available cigarettes contain a plethora of noxious additives that wreak havoc on your health and some of which you become addicted to in addition to the Nicotene addiction.American Spirit is just high quality tobacco. If you MUST smoke,or if you want to quit-try American Spirit.(I know several people who found it MUCH easier to wean themselves of the habit by switching to these.)
MikeTUlly 07/11/2006
These are crap, there are no additives but you need to suck hard on the filter. Im also not very fond of the packaging which misleads people to think these are Indian cigarettes. If you want REAL Indian cigarettes try Seneca or Smokin Joes. Ill give them 2 stars for making a perique cigarette.
Gourmand 06/24/2006
HIghest nicotine cigarettes on the market. If you're going to mess up your lungs, you may as well get a buzz. The best two are the Menthol and the black pack w/ Perique tobacco. I will not smoke anything else. Other cigs have an assortment of poisonous chemicals added to make them burn fast, so you'll smoke more and have low nicotine content. So why smoke at all if you're going to do the American major brands?? American spirit with no additives will last over twice as long as a chemically enhanced cigarette and leave you feeling satisfied after just one. They are the BEST cigarettes on the market, period. [Do not do the organic pack..they do not draw easily and they really do taste like crap..lol]

I smoke the Teal (original) and dark green (menthol) Spirits. They are by far the best cigarettes I've tasted, and I don't feel the need to smoke as much when smoking Spirits as compared to other, bigger name cigarettes.
zebulonzachari ah 12/12/2005
their horrible. Taste like they were crapped out an indian's butt. They have a stale taste and you get a headache sucking it out like frozen water from a frozen hose their god-awful!
bigbob5588 09/22/2005
I Love the Dark Green Menthol pack. They are a true menthol with the crystals in the filrter!
Urkevitz 09/08/2005
These are great when you first open the pack but go stale quickly.
MikeShempbo 08/23/2005
I didn't find the taste in the blue pack (full-strength?) particularly unique but I didn't find them to be terrible. Plus with 25% more tobacco... With the uninteresting taste though, I thought they were overpriced.
sirshacky 08/11/2005
These things are nasty. They're supposed to be natural and stuff...and they taste that way. Just kind of dirty and low quality, like some guy rolled them in his garage. They often taste stale. And they do smoke pretty hard and burn slow, so I give myself a headache trying to get something out of them half the time. I know people that swear by them, but they're not my thing. A lot of metalheads in my high school seemed to like these.
cigconn 04/19/2005
i really like these cigs because they burn slowly. i save these for when i want to sit down and let time pass. as for the taste, it is not good at all. it tastes like tobacco but also tastes like paper when you try and pinpoint it. i still like them a lot because of the burn factor.
fluffy nuggets 06/23/2004
I love them. They're probably my favorite cigarettes. I like the natural stuff. Less additives as well, another bonus. Sure they take forever to smoke, that's what good about them. If I want to kill time, I'll smoke an American Spirit, it'll last a while. You shouldn't smoke them when you go on a quickie break from work, they burn too slowly and you won't enjoy them-you'll be too worried about getting in trouble for taking too long of a break.
ShellSmashed 04/22/2004
Takes forever to smoke, which is bad for breaks and I need my nicotine quick. They taste alright, but my lungs get tired when I'm chain smoking from sucking so hard.
kolby1973 10/24/2003
Too natural, and tastes downright awful. What is the point of smoking if you aren't doing it for the nicotine and fun stuff in the ingredients ! Stay away from this cigarette if you are in desperate need of a nicotine fix !
norton01 10/06/2003
Chemicals are bad.
Chopper12 08/13/2003
This funny feeling in my throat reminds me of when I had my tonsils removed 2 years ago. It feels as if I swallowed sand paper. Truly one of the more disgusting cigarettes I have ever tasted. My wife got a carton of these from a rep. They were the organic blend. I think organic just meant they were blended with dirt and tigs.
JimmyCrackedCo rn 06/01/2003
never heard of them
MorningHack 04/03/2003
Totem Smokes! These are, without a doubt, the best cigarettes around. They are worth the extra money. There is no chemically after-taste and they burn forever. The regulars can get heavy after a couple packs, but the lights and perique blends are just as good. The hand-rolling tobacco that they sell is also very good.
DonnieBrasco69 04/02/2003
Great smoke when I can find a pack...not too readily available in my area. Burn a long time, almost too long for when your trying to squeeze a smoke in during a break from work. But they taste good.
BIGDOG 02/21/2003
American Spirit! sux
bugs bunny 01/07/2003
These had a distinct taste but after a while they taste like Winston Lights.
sixiLiX 01/02/2003
I have tried almost all of the Spirit flavors and like the menthols(dark green pack) the best. I was never big into menthols but the A.S. menthols are great. There is no menthol in the tobacco itself, but rather, it is in the filter. If you ever get a chance, feel the filter of a menthol spirit. It has a gap in the middle. Now shake the filter next to your ear, you will hear the eucalyptis crystals in there. The great thing about all spirits is the tabacco is the same in all of the flavors. The thing that makes them "light" or "ultra light" ect.. is the filter and paper are more porous depending on the strength you get. I will say, however, I do not like the A.S. with the white paper filters. They are too soft and make the taste a little different. The Organics(orange and red packs) are good if you have been a smoker for a long time and need a "cleaner" smoke. I personally don't care for them, but know people who can only smoke them. Here is how I rank the flavors I have tried: Full Flavor (Blue Pack): *** Medium (light green):* Lights (yellow pack):** Menthol (dk. green):***** Menthol Light(green/white pack):** Organics(red pack):** Organic Lights(orange pack):* Periques(black pack):**** Unfiltered(brown pack):*** Hope this helps all you smokers with taste!

I am curious if anyone smoking these cigarettes ever contemplated the symbolism used on the packaging and what peoples thoughts are on this...
crabdoctor 04/25/2002
I think that some people find these taste "nasty" is because of their lack of additives, therefore they have a shorter shelf life. Or if you goto a place that doesn't sell them often, your chances of getting a pack thats gone stale is greater.
dishinki 02/10/2002
For the last time: These DO have chemicals in them, the same as any RJ Reynolds smokes, "natural" just means the tobacco is just grown without pesticides..geez people. The smoke itself is bland, with semi-difficult draw and mild flavor.
insomniak2002 02/03/2002
Really, really good smokes and well worth the extra money. I have never had a problem buying hard packs, especially if you buy cartons from an online retailer. (This definitely keeps cost down as well - I've seen them sold on websites for as little as $25 to $28 a carton). I like the rich flavor, and to me the fact that they burn slow is definitely an indicator of their quality. (BTW, it is easier to get a "good drag" if you take slow, long drags).
MrLyle 06/22/2001
Not a bad cigarette, i was surprised I liked it. I think I need the chemicals they put in Marlboros, cuz I couldn't stick with 'em. I smoke Marlboro Mediums (which incidentally i was pissed got left off the list, cuz they are the best). And by the way Jules Cat, in such a militant anti-smoking society I don't think "remembering" Native Americans by putting their image on the pack is gonna help to reinfuse much other than a continual lack of empathy.
Jeff S 01/30/2001
These cigarettes are a great idea being all natural and marketing to the hippie culture. It bothers me that you have to pay more for a natural cigarette. There's less additives the price should be less as well.
JVargie 01/24/2001
The classic. They have a good taste probably due to the all natural ingrediants. The thing about Spirits is they last a long time, about twice as long as others, which can be good or bad sometimes.
Jules Cat 01/23/2001
As far as death sticks go, these don't have those burn fast chemicals that addict people into smoking more/buying more packs. They also reinfuse Native American images into a culture that never wants to be reminded.
Ronniecakes 01/10/2001
Known throughout the area that I live because there aren't any additives, but they're nasty! It's like smoking air. Very comparable to Marlboro Ultra Lights, where you really gotta suck on the thing to actually inhale something.
Francisco Ayala 01/08/2001
Last longer than any other cigarette I have ever smoked. Tastes delicious. It is made with long leaf natural tobacco.
Goodun 12/20/2000
These are the best tasting, longest lasting smokes out there. They have none of the added chemicals found in cheaper brands. Cost more, but worth it (they're gonna kill you anyway, so what's $5?). The herbals, however, in the orange pack-what's the point? I tried them and they're gross.
Raychill 12/19/2000
Great to have a chemical free cigarette slightly easily accessible. However, I feel like the quality has been declining in the past couple of years and I want clarification on the rumors about where the company was really bought out by RJ Regnolds or Marlbro.
freshmex 12/13/2000
These are the best. They burn for almost twice as long as other cigarettes, partly because they are additive free. They contain 100% tobacco and nothing else.
Babs 12/12/2000
American Spirits are natural and have no chemical additives. I have an emotional urge but will not have a continuous physical urge. I like the taste and am grateful that they are chemical free.
stajon 11/22/2000
These cigarettes have a stale, nasty taste and never come in hard packs. They burn way too slow to smoke in a ten minute break and you need to suck so hard, it can't be good for your cheek muscles and lungs.
Sean 11/16/2000
American Spirits are nasty because they are so light, it's like sucking air. Especially for a smoker like me, they don't cut it. I need my nicotine, and American Spirits don't even have much of that.
mcemb 11/16/2000
These cigarettes are supposedly supposed to be additive free. They burn slower than most. They taste like tobacco, not like chemicals. The quality control is okay. Sometimes the tobacco seems overly dried out. I can usually find soft packs, I don't like that.
lboogie24b 11/07/2000
Hardest cigarettes I've ever smoked. One pack of them gave me a sore throat with phlegm for two weeks. Never again unless I'm broke or desperate. If you want to sound like Debbie from the commercial than smoke away. Also, mad headaches.
bferdinand 11/06/2000
This cigarette is good because of its characteristic flavor. I can tell that there aren't any additives and what is being smoked is pure tobacco. Good for occasional cigarette smoke.
annabobanna 11/06/2000
They're the best tasting if you can afford them. They're supposed to be the least contaminated by chemicals and don't support your big, capitalist cigarette companies!
atorocstar 11/03/2000
These things suck bad. They are the worst cigarettes of all time. They taste like ground up Indians. All natural = all crap.
kevin 11/02/2000
Tastes good. Too strong sometimes. It's good once in a while but after awhile not enjoyable.
PoorOldEdgarDe rby 09/04/2000
A friend of mine smokes these and though I think all cigarettes are pretty nasty these at least don't stink up the room on quite the same level as others. The amazing thing to me is how fast these cigarettes have moved in on the market, I see them everywhere now.
susa520om 02/20/2000
A smoothe cigarette-no chemicals or additives. Well worth a few extra cents. They last longer too.
