I suppose if I resided in West Virginia I would rate Robert Byrd highly as an effective politician based alone on the massive (words really don't describe the) amounts of government pork spent in that state; however, I don't live in West Virginia and the man is simply a disgrace. Notwithstanding many of the prior reviews, I can forgive his membership in the KKK due to the passage of time. People grow and learn, and Byrd should be given the benefit of the doubt all other things aside; nevertheless, his relatively recent use of the "N-Word" and the pass he received were and remain indefensible. If the pass was given because he's a confused old man, then for the love of all things good and decent get him out of public office. I read once that (I think it was) a Coast Guard training facility was located in WV due to Byrd's efforts. Does this make sense to anyone? The Coast Guard in landlocked West Virginia?

Senator Fogbound should retire. He has had a distinguished career, and now is making a fool out of himself.

A disgrace, a disgrace to the U.S. Senate, and a disgrace to the Democratic Party. How can they support a former KKK member??? This boggels the mind.

It is time to step down Mr. Byrd, way past time!He already has half the bridges, highways and hospitals in the state named after him for crying out loud! When he speaks he utters dull statements that usually do not make any sense.Again, do our country some good and retire, please!Update:It is funny how the minorities back the democrat party for their supposed fighting for civil rights and racial equality, when one of the leaders(Byrd)is a former KKK member.Shows the ignorance of most democrats.

A brave man who has the guts to stand up to the Bush regime and fight against the immoral, illegal Iraq War. One of the few politicians nowadays that cares about the U.S. Constitution. His past is just that: his past. He has disavowed the mistakes he has made...pity some people will hold that against him forever and refuse to see the good he has done.

Robert Byrd and the dixiecrats weren't liberals. in fact the American conservative union in 1971, the first year its ratings came out gave conservative democrats favorable conservative ratings, higher than many northeastern republicans. Robert Byrd and Fritz Hollings moderated their views somewhat to survive, but were given very favorable consevative ratings to rival republicans today. On the other hand, liberals like McGovern and Tedy Kennedy and the northern democrats who supported CRA 64 got 0 ratings, which, of course, is what liberals would expect to get: http://www.conservative.org/new_ratings/1971/sen_ri wy.html

Read what LanceRoxas has to say. His little essay is excellent - I can't improve on it.

The pride of the democratic party. Talk about operating under a different standard of ethics! The democrats have a gay pimp (Barney Frank), drunk driving killers (Ted Kennedy), oval office sodomite and repeat sexual harrasser (Bill Clinton) and a card carrying Klu Klux Klan member (this clown Robert Byrd) all in their party! But hell, as long as they follow the secular religion of liberalism they are A-OK! The hypocrisy is so thick you don't know whether to laugh or cry. Newt Gingrich made a mistake on his taxes from a 403a to a 403b deduction and wham-O ...he's out of a job. Trent Lott makes the stupid mistake of saying he's proud Mississippi voted for Strom Thurman in 1948 at his 100th birthday party as the guy was literally dying not realizing it was on a segregationalist platform and HE'S TOO out of a job! Liberals as long as they adhere to their public religion they can do whatever they feel up to and their liberal buddies will jump on board. It's shameless but I guess that's the point.

Decorated Klansman. Sexist. Homophobe. He's The Conscience of The Senate. No wonder we're in such bad shape.

He was part of a terrorist group. Nothing earned for him!

I consider myself a fiscal conservative so I automatically give Byrd a low rating. He's known as king of pork-barrel spending and that's in a poverty stricken state of WV. He's also known as a former high ranking member of the KKK and has voted against the Civil Rights act in 1964. Evidently he still can't shake off his racist past, as just a few years ago in a Fox interview Byrd used the N-word twice. Byrd has gotten off easy, unlike Trent Lott, because he is a DEMOCRAT. I give him an extra star because at least he is against the war.

A hipocrate of the highest degree. Is the perfect image of why the Dems suck. He was, as we all know, a KKK member. He is a bigot and hate mongerer who has deceived to get his base of power. what I do not understand nor will I ever is how the Dems act like the party that liberated blacks when the Rep's actually did the deed while guys like him hated them. How could any black walk lockstep with the Dems when history proves they are the party of hate. An active ex KKK meber!!! Think about that. The best indication of one's future performance is their past performance.
