I'll keep this short and to the point, tastes horrible with an unforgiving bitter aftertaste.

I cut my teeth on Guinness beer, which meant I was never going to find watery American favorites like Bud and Miller very enjoyable. Nowadays, I find Guinness a little too intense, and Sam Adams has become my go-to happy medium. Full-bodied, full-flavored, rich, and satisfying, with a gorgeous color, delightful scent, and pleasing complexity of flavors. Nothing else tastes like it; you could pick it out of a lineup, and for all the right reasons. For my money, it's the best American beer on the market, hands down. Bud and Miller still taste like water to me ... I don't get the appeal.
Metal_King 10/15/2005
Plain and simple, along with Pete's, Pyramid, SIerra Nevada, and Anchor Steam, this is America at its best. Complex, hoppy, malty balance brings out the best in Sam. Just when you think you are finished, your complex palate makes you go back to the fridge to grab another one. Bud and Coors fans, STAY AWAY FROM THIS ONE. Your palate will make you run out into the street. Leave this tantalizing malt and hops to us professionals. This is my favorite brewer of all time. Sam Adams has failed to make a bad beer in all of the recipes I have tried. Well, maybe the Cherry Wheat is aggressive, but it is STILL drinkable.
lorne 10/04/2005
In Canada we'd like to think we have the best beer in the world, but the truth is, you can't judge a whole country's brewing by one brand of beer, we have plenty of mass produced bad beers here, Sam Adams proves that the Americans indeed have good brewers, I'd rather have this than the mass produced canadian garbage any day.
dragonman 09/20/2005
The beer is wonderful on tap and pairs well with a steak or grilled foods. The color is a dark amber and the head is thick and leaves lacing on the glass the whole way down, it has a nice malty flavor balanced perfectly with a good hop bite. This may be a little too intense for Bud, Miller,Coors drinkers but give it a try. This is easily the best mass produced beer in America. This should be the representative for American beer around the world, not Budweiser.
SZinHonshu 08/26/2005
This beer is truly garbage. I don't care what the commercials say about it always being a wise choice. It does carry a bit of a reputation for quality but I don't know why. I've had two bottles of this slop in the past and enjoyed neither.
PowerBen5000 08/26/2005
Not a bad beer, but too pricey for a domestic. I can get many quality microbrews and imports for less. If you want a beer at a restaurant and don't want bud/miller/coors, this is a decent choice that (thanks to their expanded distribution) 95% of restaurants will have.
Paul2505 08/21/2005
While this didn't really taste like a lager to me -more like a brown ale or even an IPA - i really enjoyed it. Keeps a nice head and has a good rich malty flavour.
GB4Life 05/07/2005
it has a great taste. the only problem is it happens to be a east-coast beer. so if your not from the east-coast, you know how pathetic they are
texasyankee 04/18/2005
I don't get the ratings here, but I guess if a majority of the people like bud, miller and coors, sam adams is going to be up there too. This stuff is so sweet it will give you a cavity and I don't know about you but I don't want anything to do with sweet, or flavors in my beer.
tof 03/31/2005
the best american beer (not light)!!
yuenglingking 03/27/2005
truly great tasting beer
jaypunkrawk 02/25/2005
Man, this beer has flavor! It's ridiculously good.
Theodore J. Stalla 02/21/2005
Good domestic offering, much better served on tap.
James76255 02/16/2005
Overrated. Fine if you want to appear trendy, but beware of that last drink. Ick.
RaterX 02/14/2005
Full-bodied, consistent flavor. I like the variety of beers and ales. The white spring ale and hefeweizen are good seasonal choices.
Skizero 01/24/2005
Drank my weight in this when i was younger. my uncle worked for the Pittsburgh Brewing Company and they were one of the breweries to manufacture Sam Adams(they no longer do). and my uncle used to give me cases of the mis-labeled brew. loved it. was the first decent beer i drank. but then the aftertaste started to get to me. only have Sammy on a rare occasion now.
Wavebacker 01/16/2005
Great, upscale beer. I get this when I want to seem like a sophisictaed beer drinker who isnt too full of myself. The Summer Ales are the best !
brentumsl 09/22/2004
I drank this in a taste test and gave bud light a higher rating than this. This beer sucks and belongs in a zoo.
wetterhorn 08/12/2004
Full bodied with a taste of hops. Probably the best American mass produced beer.
jrussell123 08/07/2004
Very good smooth and full bodied.
hotel283 06/24/2004
You see? You Americans can make decent beer when you want to. A really nice, honest brew but maybe just a touch to nutty but miles better than Bud or Coors
Gehrig 06/19/2004
It seems the ads are working - it duped a whole mess of people into believing this is good beer.
phuggue 06/01/2004
I don't know what it is, but lately, the draught from Sam Adams has had a very nasty edge on it. The bottled Sam Adams is always good!
ishbit23 03/09/2004
Two words: blindfolded jetpack knife fights. OK, four words. As you can tell this beer is high level. Ive been drinking since 7 A.M. Ill be fine after I vomit. In all seriousness though, this is a great beer.Try the SA CherryWheat, mmmmm good stuff!! So put down the Heineken, or I will have no choice but to take matters into my own hands.
jamesmac 03/09/2004
The best beer I've ever had. A real treat for me when I get back from school. Unfortunately at school I'm forced to take what i can get which is usually beer flavored water that you gulp down quickly so you dont have to taste it.
VirileVagabond 01/21/2004
Samuel Adams Boston Lager is my second beer after Guinness. It is consistently excellent in bottles or on draft (as opposed to (say) Guinness which is only consistent on draft), and this reliance is to be admired given that this micro brew is actually mass produced. Samuel Adams never tastes brassy or overly fruity (if fruity at all) even after switching from a stout on the same night (which can be a problem for most other lighter tasting beers). Unfortunately, it is my understanding that Samuel Adams has fallen out of favor recently as younger drinkers consider this brew as old school or their father's beer.
skwirel 12/23/2003
The apex of American brewing. I can still remember my first Sammy A, on a cold New Years in central Maine, on special for $12 bucks a case, Scotch Ale XXX. I'm not sure weather I started buying and drinking it because I enjoyed the flavor or because my friends couldn't stand to drink it; leaving it ALL for me. Although I prefer Newcastle, Bass, Black and Tans at the bar, I still consider Sammy A my fav, because it is so much better than the pretend beers, Bud, Miller etc. (How can anyone drink that swill?). I've even gone so far as to ship a 6-pack half way across the world (Bahrain) to satisfy the cravings of a Sammy A fan. Give it up Budweiser, you are and remain the King of swill, God how can anyone drink the stuff...is there any correlation between the number of brain cells and taste buds?
letterman 12/17/2003
This is a great beer without being too heavy. A much more flavorful lager than most of its competition.
beermonstor 08/25/2003
this stuff sucks ass
Dragon 5 08/08/2003
Sam Adams is a good alternative to Bass Ale and the like. It's proof that Americans do know a thing or two about brewing good, flavorful beer. It's lack of popularity is proof that most Americans don't know a thing about taste and are content to drink substandard beer (Coors, Bud, etc.)
olympiakos7 06/12/2003
hands down the best american mass produced beer!
Moosekarloff 06/05/2003
One of the best American beers (which isn't saying much, considering what swill most U.S. brew is), and certainly the best that is readily available. Crisp taste, solid body, good finish, very good on the stomach the next day. Has a low acid content, so it's better for you than virtually any other beer out on the market.
CanadaSucks 04/21/2003
Probably the best "bar" beer you can buy while you are out on the town. Also probably one of the best mass-produced American Beers.
pablolotto 01/31/2003
Sam Adams is my favorite widely avalaible beer. Can't really say why, I just like the taste. Not too think like a Guiness, not too much after taste like a Maredsous. Just nice and smooth. Having said that, I will not, under any circumstances, drink an American pilsner like a Budweiser, Coors or Miller Lite. Any beer that is cheap at a bar, I won't touch.
gobe 01/18/2003
The most over rated beer ever. I lived in Boston for four years and even went to the Sam Adams bar and tried and still hated. Just tastes bad.
TEBON 12/16/2002
What a great great beer. I've tried them all, but nothing hits me like a chilled bottle of Sammy's. I can't say I didn't like one make of what Samuel Adams has to offer, great finish without a horrible aftertaste. . . at my supermarket-- $8.99/12pk of Bud, vs. 9.99/12pk of Sam Adams,- go ahead and make the right decision.
EricTKO 11/30/2002
Surprisingly good. One of the better beers on the American market. Try it.
Joey is the man 02/25/2002
Drink this beer and you become the man!!
Cynical Sam 02/20/2002
Samuel Adams Boston Lager is one of my favorite beers of all time. However, I think it tastes exactly like Red Hook ESB, which is much more reasonably priced.
Potch1214 10/11/2001
Very good beer. I'd put it up there with Yuengling and Newcastle as one of my three favorites. Hard to believe people would actually rather drink Budweiser than this...
macc4469om 06/26/2001
If there is one thing that New England is good for (other than freezing your scrotum off) it is good microbrews. Samuel Adams is one of those Microbrews that just happened to make it big, and it is obvious why. I'd still rather have a Shipyard Ale (Maine) over it anyday, but I'm glad I can find it here in Georgia.
nasha 04/23/2001
This beer proves that the US can make (a) good beer.
Albatross 02/22/2001
whenever I'm in the States I bring a case home with me - what a wonderful taste!
Ignatius J. Reilly 02/04/2001
this beer has both theology and gemometry!
alicat 01/29/2001
I never thought of getting a Samuel Adams. It is just one of those beers that is good but I don't love it. I don't have any feelings towards it. This weekend I went to a party and was drinking the beer from the keg and was just really enjoying it. It was a light beer in the sense that it was lighter in color but it had this great flavor that made it almost like a Amber Ale. It was so good so after a few cups I asked what kind it was after having a guessing game which we guessed it might be Red Hook but was told it was Sam Adams. I was shocked. I now think that I would order one. I really enjoyed its taste.
Al-Davis-Lives! 12/10/2000
Consistently one of the best beers out there. Always a safe bet if you're pressed for a decision by a waitress and you go blank. Smooth drinking with a nice mellow aftertaste that doesn't build up in bitternes, like some others beers. Sam Adams is one you can drink all night.
magellan 10/06/2000
A very good beer that I very rarely drink. I don't know why, but there just never seems to be an appropriate situation for this beer. When I'm just drinking a beer or two to relax I'll have a Sierra Nevada, or an Anchor Steam, or a Guiness. If I am out and about, I am more likely to drink Corona, Bud, or Tecate. Sam Adams is a tasty beer - prior to discovering Sierra Nevada, I considered it the best American beer. But for whatever the reason, it just has not cracked into my everyday lifestyle.
d.fe440et 05/25/2000
A cut above Budweiser, Coors, etc., but not a spectacular beer.
Ruby 05/01/2000
Sam's Lager is fine stuff -- an exquisite compliment to unwinding at the end of the day, watching Seinfeld re-runs and eating take-out in front of the TV. If you're really going to taste your beer, my favorite is Sam's Cream Stout, but then its not good for summer drinking. The Lager is always appropriate.
