 | Flick01 (71) 05/13/2005 | I have had some experience helping people with multiple personalities and for those who are not familiar, it's not a joke or simply a disorder. A good percentage of those who suffer from MPD became that way because of horrific abuse often suffered in young childhood. I don't mean a dirty old grandfather fondling a young girl's breasts, I mean the kind of abuse that I cannot describe here in a public forum as some people would most certainly become upset. When a person, especially a young child, is subjected repeatedly to this kind of abuse the mind has a built in safety valve which creates multiple personalities. Without this mental safety valve the person would literally implode mentally if they had to carry the entire burden by themselves as one person. Many times the other personalities (called alters ) have a job or a function. For example one alter may be a protector of the body so that if the body is threatened this personality comes forward. Although there are common traits not all people who suffer from MPD react in exactly the same way. Personalities can be either good or evil, young or old, male or female, regardless of the age or sex of the host. Sometimes the other personalities and the host can hear a conversation between the personality that is forward and someone who may be talking to them. Other times they cannot hear and if another personality comes forward you may have to tell them what you just spoke about. Only in rare cases are the personalities able to rejoin back into one again. Most people who have MPD are aware of it and they spend the rest of their lives dealing with the alters just trying to be some kind of a normal person. Abuse of this kind does more than just trigger the mind's safety mechanism, it ruins its victims for life. The abuse that is suffered by children who become MPD literally is a life sentence for them, as they will spend the rest of their lives dealing with the MPD. Most will die with an understanding of what happened to them but they will have had no life of their own. It is a constant struggle which has been cast upon innocent victims through no fault of their own. There are too many aspects and specifics to go into here on RIA but if there is justice in the afterlife then I have to believe there is a special place in hell reserved for those who do this kind of damage to children.
