The bible (old testament) also says you can sell your daughter, and that people who work on Sunday should be killed, and that slaves shouldn't try to get free, and people who wear clothing with different threads should be burned, and that we shouldn't touch the skin of a dead pig (no football)... Try reading the new testament. It says we shouldn't have any sex at all ;) (I meant the love part. Read the part about love everyone, and you'll do okay.)

The Bible also says thou shalt have no other Gods before me, also says it's a sin to work on the sabbath, to eat shellfish, and to wear multi-blend fabrics. The point is, the laws of this country are not dicated by the Bible, and in many cases contradict it (e.g. compare the first amendment freedom of religion to the first commandment thou shalt have no other Gods before me.). The US is not a theocracy. If people argued for laws in this country based on the Koran or Buddhist writings, people would freak. There must be tangible rational reasons for the laws we impose or else we risk destroying ourselves based on rules that may have been a good idea 4,000 years ago, but might not be now (e.g., eating pork). It is entirely possible that the issue this passage addressed was procreation, rather than sodomy. If men did not have sex with women back then, no babies would be born. If men did not have sex with women now (hard to believe, yes) babies could be born, through artificial insemination. The rule may have made sense back then, but not as much now.

UPDATE:Yeah, actually, I just did a paper on that. In Salem, you are correct. There were not many witch trials. Most of those took place in North and South Carolina. I also don't believe our laws should be based on the Bible. As PBeavr says, it is truly full of holes and contradictions. **The last time we mixed politics and religion, people were burned at the stake. We all might chuckle about this sentence, but it is so true. **Well, the Bible doesn't say anything about MARRYING two men or two women. How about this for a fun fact: Abraham married his half-sister, Sarai. Isn't incest wrong, as well? How about this one: Men were allowed to marry more than one woman. Abraham slept with his woman servant to make a son, fearing that his own wife was too old.

Well gee, since everyone in this country isn't a Christian perhaps we shouldn't base our laws on the Bible. The laws in this country are supposed to govern EVERYONE. It doesn't work if you're forcing one religious belief on a person who has a different belief. Leave the judgement to God. None of us are qualified to judge others because we are ALL sinful.

What the bible says should never have a say in the laws we make, no matter what the issue. Religon is religon. Law is law. We should never blur the line, and we should never run a country based on what someone's religon says.

well, see the thing is, the country is not ran by the bible, or actually shouldnt be. in the constitution, pursuit of happieness is one thing in it. well how are we not depriving these people of their pursuit of happieness by not letting them marry who they love? well we should be following the constitution right? if this is such a free country than why are we ran by christians. oh yeah.... i am bi, so dont comment on me how bad homosexuality is.

Secular society exists to protect people from each other and allow them to co-exist peacefully. In secular society, it is not the place for one group of people (even if they're the majority) to impose social values on others. This cuts both ways: you're free to live your life as you please, but so is everyone else.

As an argument against gay marriage, quoting the Bible in a purely secular discussion doesn't change many minds. I believe the Bible is useful in making personal decisions about God's expectations of us. If you don't, that's fine. Each of us makes up our own mind on this issue and we vote accordingly. Use the Bible, if you want, or don't. Generally, our government has not been a biblical entity and should not be, although we and our elected representatives are entitled to read the Bible, or any other resource, for help in making up our/their own minds.

While I think a basic following of the Bible would be a good thing (simply following the ten commandments would be good), I don't think we should strictly base laws on what is in the Bible. The Bible says not to worship any other God, but we have freedom of religion that says you can worship Buddha. The Bible says not to commit adultery, and we even had a President that couldn't stick to that.

Though I do believe our traditions are positively affected by our inherently Christian principles I fail to see where direct quotations of sin in the Bible serve a secular purpose worth legislation. Yes Christians may find homosexuality to be sinful (some don't) but is there an overriding reason serving the public good for every sin to be legislated against? Absolutely not. This is why though I believe sodomy laws are constitutional, they are utterly retarded and serve no purpose but to punish homosexuals.

why should the bible dictate the lives of a nation that is not made up entirely of people who believe in everything the bible has to say. We are not a nation that is supposed to use religious affiliation as a governing tool.

This is based on the argument that the Bible is a universal code of conduct which delegates how all people should behave, including what is legal and what is not. While the Bible does promote many positive beliefs that are generally accepted as universal, there are, as many have already pointed out, passages in the Bible which we do not base our moral and legal codes upon. It would be impractical for women to not be allowed to wear pants because The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination . . . (Deut. 22:5); it would be an outrage if a man who raped a virgin were to be just fined an set amount and then the victim be forced to marry her attacker (Deut. 22:28-29), and it would be totally unacceptable for people to stone to death a child simply because he is rebellious and stubborn (Deut. 21:18-21). Thus, the The Bible Says . . . argument cannot work in this case; while it is a good source for many positive beliefs, not all statements in the Bible can translate into something that should be upheld legally. OK, fair enough. Leviticus apparently does say this. But the Bible also says that being married should not prevent a man from having as many concubines as he wants. It also says that should a husband die and there be no children, the brother should marry the widow. It also says that only marriages in which the wife is a virgin are valid - if the wife is not a vigin, she shall be executed by public stoning. There's plenty of wacky - or I guess I should say dated - stuff in the bible, doesn't mean we should make laws out of all of them. Does it?
