The Billy Jack character was introduced in the Film THE BORN LOSERS which came before Easy Rider. It's pretty dated now but back in the day it was addressing an entire generation. Good news-the DVD versions have been updated & all the Billy Jack Films a now have remastered sound and all are widescreen !

Goofy but enjoyable hippie era flick, kind of a guilty pleasure- about social and moral issues from the time, with a leftist slant. Basically, a somewhat Eastwood or Rambo- like, half Native American Vietnam vet defends a racially diverse alternative community of hippies from vicious and prejudiced rednecks and corrupt town officials, apparently somewhere in the Southwest. Bad acting, pompous and over the top, probably got the idea in part from "Easy Rider": but it did address some important issues like racism and closed mindedness. The theme song, "One Tin Soldier," by a forgotten Midwestern rock band called Coven, was a minor hit in '71.
