I don't even gamble, but this place is REALLY fun!

I've been taken in by the flashy over-the-top glitz of the casinos, bright lights, and "family attractions". But I can't defend the town's sleazy beginnings, its mob connections, its appeal to the lowest common denominator, the debauchery, the contempt for humanity involved in stealing from them-no wonder they call it Lost Wages. Of course the gamblers have no one to blame but themselves.

Las Vegas is America at it's worst. Having been here three months, and having come prepared to have a great time, with little or no preconceptions about the city, it has been the most disappointing and depressing place I've visited. If you venture from the cheeseball kitsch (which most don't) of the strip, you'll find a city that feeds on it's poor (an overwhelmingly ubiquitous bunch) and serves to provide only the most hollow entertainment for the lowest common denominator and line the pockets of the richest among them. If that is your cup of tea, come visit, by all means. (And the weather, for most of the year, leads one to wonder why the "World's Largest Adult Playground" was built in a totally uninhabitable environment). It smacks of an unfortunate experience that I had as a teenager, when my family visited the Virgin Islands; we were whisked from the airport to the resort via taxi and passed some of the most underdeveloped, depressed areas i've ever seen. But enfolded in the lush resort, the gates shut securely behind us, the false poshness of the area only served to remind me of the poverty outside. Few other guests in the resort seemed to be affected; but the only locals I saw for the entire visit were changing the sheets. It is the same dynamic here.

Flashy and overwhelming. Bad tap water. Maybe if I go back when I'm old enough to gamble and live the real lifestyle that Las Vegas is known for, I'll enjoy it more. Or maybe it's just not my kind of place. The hotels were interesting, however.

Vegas rocks! It's definitely a place to get loose. They've got some great restaurants and great boutiques in the hotels. Recommended: V Bar in the Venetian, Voodoo Lounge for the view, Olives at Bellagio and Postrio in Venetian have great food.

When you think about it, Las Vegas is really a very bizarre living history museum. What other place on earth could more aptly show the rapid metamorphosis of two equally strange "cultures"? Not so very long ago, into this desert wasteland trouped the glitter and tinsel laden, martini-swilling lounge lizards, their bimbo sidekicks, and self-important cheese ball Mafia types. They built their gaudy hotels, played their games, set out their traps, tossed in their lines and went to work. A few decades pass and suddenly a town that was once labeled "for adults only" now finds itself in competition with Disney for the family vacationer. The old guard has now been replaced by buffed up corporate types in expensive suits who - build their gaudy hotels, play their games, set out their traps, toss in their lines and go to work. Maybe the old town hasn't changed so much as it just added a newer more expensive veneer. (Could this be where Madonna gets her ideas for reinventing herself?)

I went to Las Vegas last weekend for the first time as an adult, and nothing could have prepared me for the experience. I was expecting to be only mildly amused by all of the glitz and cheesy entertainment, so I was totally taken aback when I found myself loving every minute of the Las Vegas experience- especially the gambling and touring the casinos. With the help of some really nice dealers (at the Monte Carlo and the Mirage), I learned how to play blackjack and ended up spending hours at the table. Since I expected to lose money (for the price of entertainment), it came as a huge surprise to finish with more than ten times what I'd invested! (O.K., so I started with $20. It was still a thrill to win.) When I was able to pull myself away from the blackjack tables, I toured the casinos. It was incredible to see entire "cities" inside massive casinos like the Bellagio, the Venetian, Aladdin, and New York, New York. On my last night in Las Vegas, I saw Cirque du Soleil's "Mystere," which was showing at Treasure Island. I enjoyed the acrobatics, dance, and feats of strength, but the annoying "baby" character who appeared throughout the show almost ruined it for me. (I recommend seeing Cirque du Soleil's "O" instead.) Overall, I had a fantastic time in Las Vegas, and I hope to make a return trip in the near future.

Some people say that Las Vegas' over-the-top tackiness makes it interesting - I say it's just a huge, surreal eyesore. From the slot machines at the gates of the airport, to the cab drivers who say New York, New York's roller coaster is the best ride in town since the hookers were kicked off the strip, to the casino's that are so cavernous you can't find an exit - am I the only person thinking of fire exits? I didn't bet a single quarter - the families in the casinos at 11:00 pm were to depressing to contemplate. It kills me that this is one of the top destination-vacations in the US.

An interesting city. I like the hip designs of the hotels, especially those with European influence, like Bellagio and Venetian. But, I can't stand all the smoke from the cigarettes and cigars. It just choked you to death.

Las Vegas has everything done on a grand scale, but it seems that the people who provide for the needs of all the tourists visiting the city are grossly underpaid and underappreciated.

for living las vegas away from tourist stops is a great place with many job opertunities and cost of living is resonable but still not a place to take kids for vacation

The official playground of the United States. I'm glad I never went to Vegas when I was anywhere between the ages of 18 and 22, because I might have hurt myself. As it is, when I go there for bachelor parties these days, it takes me about a week to recover.

great partying, great women, great food and gambling all 24/7. What city can beat that?
