I'm not sure if the city itself deserves a truly bad rating--but I'm going to register my truly bad experience with some of the bigoted French-only speakers here. Quite ignorant about the tensions between Francophiles and the Anglos when I arrived, I quickly found out how nasty the French only speakers can be. While trying to depart a metro train one day during our visit, my 1 year old baby and I were literally blocked from exiting, because I had asked a French only speaking man to move by saying Excuse me. After several attempts to get him to move by tapping him on the back, he finally stepped aside and yelled, SPEAK FRENCH! to me and my baby as we passed by. If the Quebec separatists are trying to gain international favor in their efforts to secede, they certainly aren't making any progress by alienating and insulting their international visitors.

The coolest city in Canada (in more ways than one). If you want to get a feel for it, read Mordecai Ricter's novels: he's the funniest writer who ever lived, Montreal and Canada's best novelist. The only reason Montreal gets 4 stars is that humans can't hibernate.

Montreal has been good to me. I probably went 20 times from '97-'00 for the underage drinking and gambling. The casino is beautiful and the bottom floor is glass with water underneath; really cool. If you're American your dollar goes far in Canada. And I've found the girls to be friendly to Americans and I always did well at the dance clubs. Of course it was always the rich girls who were up from Boston that I had luck with but hey that's alright. It does have 2 knocks though - 1) it's kinda sleezy with strip clubs, peep shows, and panhandlers on every single block and 2) don't go from Nov thru Feb it's way too cold.

poor financial economy in Montreal, too many french speaking ppl, the province of quebec is also a poor place to be. Why do you think Toronto is now the largest and strongest economy Metropolis in Canada, and not Montreal anymore ? It's the Quebeqers and their stupid Seperatists. Montreal is Garbage.

I live in Toledo Ohio. I decided that me and my family would take a 3 day trip up to Montreal. It was such a wonderful place. The architecture was second to none, the people are better than everybody gives them credit for (or maybe it is because I know French???), and everything just seems great there.

Born in Montreal, travelled throughout North America, and never found another city that matched its style, European flavour, and great restaurants...

I live in the Montreal area and it is the safest city in North American, with one of the lowest crime rate (if not the lowest). In the summer, there are many outdoor activities and festivals, such as the Jazz Festival at the beginning of July, with many free outdoor concerts! Come see us :-)

It was a very nice city. We especially liked walking through old Montreal. We felt a real sense of history. The Biodome is a must see. We took the bus tour by Graylines Buses the first day and that was the best way to get what you would like to go back and see. The people are friendly and the city is quite clean.
