My one experience travelling through Mississippi was so unsettling that, hereafter, I will make every effort to avoid this state in my future travels.

Unless you're from Mississippi (or perhaps an adjacent state), you really don't want to drive through this state with out-of-state license tags. So-called "southern hospitality" does not extend to anyone from outside the South.

I've gained mounds of respect for this state the past few years. First of all, Mississippi is the only state whose citizens had the balls, tenacity, and good sense to keep their state flag the way it's always been. And second, they were the first state to hang "In God We Trust" posters all over their schools. You gotta love a state that sticks to its principles like that. And I encourage all of you to visit Vicksburg to see the Confederate battle fields and the Old Courthouse Museum. That entire town is bursting with history and culture. And if you want to have a good look at the best college in America just make a stop at Oxford and stroll around the sidewalks of Ole Miss.

I'm afraid that I'm going to have to change my tune on Mississippi after recently visiting the state again. The Civil War battlefields are amazing, and just driving through the state during the daytime and admiring the beautiful scenery of the Natchez Trace Parkway grants this state 4 stars.

If America needed and enema, this is where they would plug it in.

For the uninitiated (Northerners, mostly), Mississippi can be an unflattering place. But look a little deeper: a rich history, great music (home of the blues), great food, nice people, and neat little towns (Oxford is a good example). All this, plus some of the finest-looking women on the planet. Mississippi deserves a better reputation.

Grits ' n cotton 'n good ole boys. Poor as heck. Slackers and hayseeds. This ranks up there with Alabama and Louisiana as states that have homes that are mobile and ten cars in the front yard that aren't. Yee-haw!
