Best food in the world.Don't miss the cold though.Whenever I say I am from New York people jump to the assumption I am from nyc, but I am from Orange County, where they have milking cows, Onion fields, rolling country side (slowly being taken over from City people looking to sprawl out- another reason I haven't given it a 5} Lots and Lots to do, from Rock Concerts, to camping,to dancing, New York state has it all.

This state isn't much different from any other NE state in this country, NYC is VERY different from the rest of this state. Lots to see, but, overrated.
Tauceti 01/30/2005
There is much to see in all of New York-its hard for the upstate to compete with a mega star like New York City, but there is much in the rural upstate. Try the Catskills, or the Finger Lakes, or the Niagara region. Lake Placid is just that. While there is history everywhere, like at Lake George and for baseball fans, Cooperstown. New York city needs little in the way of a tourist intro- it speaks for itself.
Skizero 01/28/2005
NY state is beautiful...and I love Buffalo. It loses two stars b/c of NYC.
Jar-Jar Binks 01/28/2005
I've lived here for 28 years. It's a fun state to live in. Peeple keep saying New Yorkers are rude. But we're always in a hurry: rush hour traffic, blizzards, whateva. But we can be the nicest people when we're not busy.
geog84 01/23/2005
I consider New York as Pennsylvania's older brother. It has the same as its southerly neighbor, just bigger and better. (Including taxes lol)
samjung23 01/18/2005
Sorry New York Staters! It seems I mixed up my review with New York City! Well, having had relatives in Buffalo and traveled throughout New York, I guess it's safe to say it's not a bad place. Average state really, but NYC is New York, like it or leave it. But I feel my rating is justified based on how much I would rather not have anything to do with NYC. The state is fine, visiting NYC is fine, but as a city to live in...NO WAY! I remember visiting my grandmother in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn in the 80's, and being serenaded by police sirens all night...only now did I realize that wasn't a good thing and that Bensonhurst apparently was a big Italian area with plenty of mobsters!

My beautiful homestate, love it here, will stay here my whole life. The cold doesn't bother me and the scenery and people of upstate would make up for it even if it did. NYC is where all of the negative stereotypes of new yorkers come from (generaly made by ignorant people in uneducated areas of the country) First off, everyone in NYC isnt mean, and second of all, EVERYONE IN NEW YORK STATE IS NOT LIKE THOSE IN NYC!!! Even some of you people that gave new york very high ratings on here, i just have to tell you, YOU DON'T GET IT. New York state goes will beyond NYC and the Hudson river. We also have the wine country in the central part of the state, the breathtaking adirondac and catskill national forests, the thousand islands in the St. Lawrence seaway, and half of Lake Champlain.
thebear777 12/07/2004
Upstate is one of the most beautiful areas of the US.

I would do almost anything to get back to new york (upstate). I was born there, and when i was just a kid we moved to NC. I hate nc with every molecule in my body, and want to move back to the underestimated state of New York so bad it makes me sick. One thing though to all of you idiots that think new york is a city, ITS NOT, THERE IS MORE TO THE STATE, A LOT MORE!!! Don't get me wrong, i think NYC is great! BUT THE GREAT STATE OF NEW YORK HAS MANY OTHER THINGS GOING FOR IT TOO!!!! Chalky, i gotta say, to diss the state that you were born and raised in and to say that you can't believe that other people like it, is a very sad and pathetic thing. I hope that i will soon be back in new york, and once i am, i will never take anything for granted again! STAY AWAY FROM NC!!!!!
I'll Rate This! 11/23/2004
Ok little whiney boy Chalky, I AM TALKING ABOUT THE METRO AREAS!!!!! THE ROCHESTER, SYRACUSE, AND ALBANY METRO AREAS ALL SAW INCREASES IN POPULATION!!! I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT JUST THE CITY LIMITS, AND ALL OF THOSE PEOPLE THAT DID LEAVE THE INNER CITY AREAS JUST MOVED TO THE SUBURBS!!! Ok, i am getting sick of this kid. I said from the beginning that the METRO areas of all cities in new york except for buffalo were growing!!! And if this kid would stop whining and making me defend my facts, i could better get my point accross. New York is a STATE!!! It is not a city, all of the stupid people who rate ny based soley on NYC are really not getting it. NYC is only a very small area of New York state, but i mean, NYC is great too!!! All of the state is great! We have adirondacs park, the largest national forest in the country, we have the catskills, and we have the finger lakes whine region just south of Rochester were i live. And in Rochester kodak is not leaving they are here to stay, and are actually starting to HIRE people, the layoffs have stopped, and all of the layoffs that did take happen were for the low paying factory jobs that went to china because of the tax loop holes that bush made. The high tech high paying jobs for kodak have stayed and are increasing in the eastman kodak headquarters here. Not to mention we still have 2 MORE FORTUNE 500 COMPANIES!!! Xerox and Baush&Lomb are still in Rochester, and are getting back on ther feet, just like the other compaines affected by 9/11
WiseManSays 11/22/2004
New York state has everything you could ever want. Except for Chalky, i can't stand people like him, grow up man. You don't have to type a whole freaking essay to make your HOME state look bad, that is really stupid. I think that once new york gets rid of pataki, we will probably the most livable state soon. I already think that new york one of if not the best states to live in. One thing though, they either need to split upstate and downstate apart, or try to unite them some more, because that is an issue that needs some major attention and action taken. lol look at all the stupid people who think that all of new york is one big city, that is stupid, its obviouse that those people have never even been here so their comments really get no credit.
la8 11/16/2004
The city is awesome...wouldn't want to live there though. Upstate has some beautiful scenery too. Buffalo is a craphole and too cold.
celticprince 11/07/2004
NYC is wonderful, the rest of the state seems to be a cross between PA and the great lakes region. Many nice rural areas- and much history. The Finger lakes area is most pretty- with many wineries- The Lake Placid area is great for winter sports and very peaceful and serene. The Hamptons are a great place to visit and live (if you can afford it!) New York is a solid state- but its NYC that is the crowning jewel.
opinion585 11/05/2004
THERE IS MORE TO NEW YORK THAN NEW YORK CITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All parts included, it is by far the greatest state in the union! The scenary of rural upstate new york is awsome, especaily in fall. All of the cities, including NYC and in Upstate new york, are full of history, interesting neighborhoods, and yes, contrary to the stereotypes that so many people like to put on us, really nice people. NYC has actually changed for the better since 9/11, and for a city of over 8 million people, it has an incredible sense of community. The cities of upstate new york are where america began after colonial days, and are all, by far, the friendliest cities in america. It is the most diverse of all states and it truly is the symbol of america. I LOVE NEW YORK, AND NOT JUST NYC!
werewolf 11/01/2004
Hey! It is more than the city. Upstate is great. We have mountains, lakes, and the largest state park. I am from NYC but I get up all the time. Every ethnic group is represented, and we have more Native Americans too (including my family). If you have never been upstate you have missed a great part of geography, history, and people of the New York (and the rest of the US too). Come visit.
Djahuti 10/30/2004
Upstate N.Y. has some of the best scenery around (great camping, but even in summer be prepared for cold at night.)Manhattan, although grossly expensive, offers every aspect of our culture one can imagine:the good and the bad.
jenniferia 09/29/2004
as the band fear once said, new york's alright if you like saxophones. i like saxophones. and new york. and there's nothing in the world that beats passing out in front of cbgb's while hugging a 40 oz of colt 45, then waking up the next morning and having to beg people for change so you can afford a train ticket back home since someone stole your while you were sleeping, so you could make it back to jersey in time for class. new york is teenage memories for me. i will never, ever hate new york. oh yeah, and that whole new york STATE thing...the country part is nice, but insignificant in the shadow of the great city. they should be two completely different states, because they seem that way anyway.
Bird808 08/17/2004
New York reminds me a lot of London, a city that never sleeps. You can never be in New York and say your bored theres just simply too much to do. The only thing I don't like about New York are the people, their just too darn rude.
BIGnEASY 07/13/2004
I am in LOVE with New York! I am from New Orleans and to me, New Orleans is a mini New York. It is sooooooo busy and billions of people just walk up the strret all day. I love the way the houses are made in Harlem. I go to New York twice a year and I have no complaints yet. When I first went, it was a definite culture shock. There's white, blacks, phillipines, asians, mexican, puerto-ricans, spanish, etc. Ther's muslim, catholics, jews, buddhist, athiest, etc. It is so amazing. You can learn many things in only one day. I must add that it is a dirty city, but since I'm from New Orleans I am used to dirty streets. You have to catch the subway but try to act like you know where you're going because it's kind of embarassing getting on a way-too-packed train and not knowing your exit. DON'T ACT LIKE TOURIST on the subway because people are known for pick pocketing so just beware. Go to CHINA TOWN! It is a big street called Canal where they have bargains and knock off purses and jewlry. The perfume is real and the prices are low. You have to eat at TAD'S STEAKHOUSE! The steaks are juicy and the meal is cheap. The most you may pay is $10.00. If you love shoes, Macy's is the place. They have a shoe Dept. on every floor and there are about 7 floors.Be sure to bring plenty cash, traveler's checks or credit card. You have to walk up broadway because they have little jewlry shops and shoe stores with name brand shoes for cheap. If you're a big timer and like to spend money, you of cousre want to go to saks, tiffany's, bloomingdales, gucci, prada, etc. If you don't like to spend that kind of money you still might want to walk through and browse, you may get tempted. Whatever you do HAVE FUN!

New york gets brownie points for new york city and the beautiful countryside uptate. but newyorkers are conceited degenerates. You could call new york the deep south of the far north!
andyjay 04/24/2004
New York's a nice city, but I wouldn't want to live there. EDIT: But lately I have been considering Upstate as a place to live; possibly around the Capital District. That area looks very nice to me, from the pix I've seen.
sfalconer 04/19/2004
Nice place to visit but I would not want to live there.
Down2Earf 04/05/2004
Before you post here I need to remind everyone that there is more to New York STATE than NYC and Long Island. NYC is a fabulous city but it only covers about 300 sq miles in a state of 47,000 sq miles. Upstate NY is like a cross between Western Pennsylvania and New England. The pace of life upstate is very laid back and unpretentious in sharp contrast to NYC. There's a lot of cool smaller cities and towns like Ithaca, Corning, Potsdam, and Ellicottville and bigger, historic cities like Buffalo, Albany, Binghamton, Rochester, and Syracuse. The wine region in upstate NY which runs from the Finger Lakes (http://www.fingerlakeswinecountry.com/documents/ar ea%20touring%20map.pdf) west to Lake Erie is the 2nd biggest wine producing area in the US next to CA's Napa Valley and quite a tourist attraction. NY State is really 2 completely states in one and a very interesting place to visit.
minkey 03/26/2004
It is funny how many people think that New York is NYC and nothing more. In relative terms the city is just a small area compared with the rest of the state. The rest of New York is 100% opposite of the city. Much of New York State is hickville; just barren country land. Not over-populated but under-populated. People are as friendly as anywhere else. New York City almost should be a state of it's own. I've never been to anything like it. It's so huge and there's so much to do. Crime is a problem in any city, New York is no exception, but I feel safe when I'm there. And it's not so much that the people in the city are rude, it's just that they're not openly friendly. In the South and Midwest people can stop to smile and talk to strangers because there is 1 person per hundred miles. New York City is such a busy place that people learn to worry about and keep to themselves.

The biggest crock of ***holes in the entire United States. I have been there a few times and OMG!!! I have never EVER seen so many ***holes!!!

The reason they call NYC the city that never sleeps, is because you can't let your guard down even for a minute, this place blows goats.

A beautiful state. Most of the people there are nice and hardworking, and there certainly are some beautiful attractions, espescially when heading furher into Upstate New York- Niagra Falls was simply breathtaking. This state also has much historical significance, as the battle at Saratoga Springs, which marked a turning point in the war with American victory, was fought here. NYC is home to Madison Square Garden, the world's most famous arena and the Statue of Liberty, not to mention the Empire State Building. The courage and dedication and bravery of all Americans really rang true on September 11th and the subsequent days. A great place to visit!
mmrrmex 01/13/2003
I love New York. Those buildings built in the 20's 30's and 40's are unique. The views from New Jersey are breathtaking. Great museums, restaurants and bars. A city with a very very strong personality. The Empire State Building is one of the most beautiful skyscrapers ever built. New York has it all!!!!

Greatest City
Amy55Rose 12/05/2002
I liked seeing the sights, but the weather was a little too much because it was very hot and muggy and it smelled bad- I think I'll just stick to Seattle. There were LOTS of people and quite a bit of crime in NYC, but I really loved seeing the rest of the state.
Golgo Thirteen 11/21/2002
NYC is fun, the Finger Lakes are georgeous, but I can't give give it more than 3 stars because they gave us that she-devil Hillary as a Senator.
Stoneage 11/11/2002
This is one of the worst states in the US. Avoid it at all costs. Total dump.
ashleys 01/01/2002
I've only been to NYC, so I can't say much about the state as a whole. I do love the city though, so why not rate a five? However, I'm mainly putting this comment up here for one reason: The spirit of the city on and around 9/11 probably would have happened anywhere in this country, even in many places overseas. I don't think that type of behavior in a tragedy is specific and unique to New Yorkers.
sexymeow 11/06/2001
The tragity was a down time in new york , and it still is. I must say a couple words to you: God Bless America. Let Gods hand of glory and faith touch every one of you who were effected! Let him give you the faith, strength and confidence that you need topull through let me tell you that I have done all I can do for the red cross. I've donated money, I've sent letters of comfert and support. I wish that all of you who are out there will agree that we arein a time of need. and we won't put up with the tarrorism that has taken place. In other news I think New York is great in other ways, the statue of liberty is historical. The empire state Building is a sign of achivement. Niagra falls is the beautey of the state, And now new York has a more monumental place then ever. The trade center which is definatly worthy of a statue or monument or something! I like the people in new york too. sure some of them are hicks but not all of them are. Most are nice and genorouse! I'd like to say once more God bless new york, God bless america. *Meow!*
ellajedlicka21 10/15/2001
Everything it represents is great. It has the urban area of New York City (the greatest sports city in the world as well as the greatest all-around city because of its immense diversity and culture). Madison Square Garden is the world's most famous arena (as well as the capital of the world) and Yankee Stadium is the most historic place in sports. It is so rich in history, from the Museum of Natural History to Ellis Island, to the Statue of Liberty, to the Baseball Hall of Fame to the battlefield at Saratoga, the turning point in the Revolutionary War. New York is a liberal state as well, with Hillary Clinton and Chuck Schumer as our senators. They don't vote for hateful people. Also, there is hiking on the Appalachian trail and the Adirondacks. Plus, there is a ton of great golf courses (Mansion Ridge in Monroe, NY). It is truly the best state, with the greatest sports teams. New York is the place to be. In case you couldn't tell from this comment, New York is my home state.
TheFreak 10/15/2001
Just because I feel sorry for some of the people in New York does not mean I am required to give it some superhuman rating. New York is an okay place to live, but just like Kentucky, the personality here could improve. And also, they provided us with a good baseball team. Mike Pi(a)zza is a NY stereotype in one person. Snobby with their nose four miles up in the air. But they aren't all damnyankees. I mean, my two favorite reviewers on this whole darn site are from New York. And I (sigh) ALSO have to add the fact that New York gave us Art Garfunkel. Rock stars again. So I have to love them for that. Overall, New York is a nice place, but Hoochie makes a point when he says it is overrated. I think the same thing, so I give it four stars.
sunny184 09/28/2001
HOOCHIE...I'm one of those rude, snobby, stuck on myself, and not to bright New Yorkers and I'm proud of it. Did you happen to watch some of us stuck on ourselves people after the bombing? We showed courage and bravery through our tears. New York State is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Our beaches are some of the best on Earth. When you drive upstate it is breath taking. And by the way, New Yorkers are hard working, giving (and proved it), caring (and proved it) people I have ever met.
Rusty 09/26/2001
I live in NY, and I would venture that the Empire State is one of the most diverse ones in the Union. It ranks up there with California, Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts, and so forth. A top state in education, scenery, population, ethnic and religious diversity, etc. But what is the greatest aspect about the State of New York is its people and its capacity to help its fellow man. You saw the spirit of NY and NYC in the wake of the Sept. 11 tragedies: people pulling together for the sake of unity and to demonstrate our commitment to helping all people regardless of what or who they look like. Governor Pataki and Mayor Guiliani have done an exemplary job in working together to help New Yorkers, and Americans, deal with these catastrophic events. GOD BLESS OUR GREAT STATE OF NEW YORK!!!!!
yitta2626 07/19/2001
You wanna act crazy go to california; you wanna act decent come to new york.

Now really travolta lover, we're "snotty brats"?And we're "concited"? Didn't you forget a few?Like "obnoxious" "loud" "aggresive" "bleeding hearted liberals" "rude" and "uncaring"?And our "attitude"as a state, needs improving??Well,so be it,have to say though, that for all our flaws, you should take Some comfort in knowing that we are Stuck with Hillary...
travolta_lover 06/15/2001
Everyone there is concited! They are snotty brats! Perfect for Hillary, i dont know why there are so many attractions there i dont think that they deserve it at all! they really need to change their atitude and maybe i would start giving this stat good reviews!
callmetootie 04/07/2001
I live in New York, I was born in New York, so why wouldn't I not like New York? New York is a beautiful state, and the city is the first stop for anyone to see. Broadway is great, it's like Las Vegas these days without the gangs and hookers around. The dining is great. You've got the 3 story-high McDonalds or some great italian restaurant.
Hoochie 12/30/2000
If you are rude, snobby, stuck on yourself, and not to bright then NY is the state for you. I think it is very over-rated. People need to start seeing it as a state like everyother state because I'll be the first to say it has a lot of attractions, but it's not a bed of roses either. I'm tired of them skanky yankees thinking they are the bomb...because they aren't.
PoorOldEdgarDe rby 08/27/2000
For so many reasons this is one of the best states in the country. Obviously 3/12 Anonymous hasn't really spent anytime in NY state or else he/she wouldn't have made such a ludicrously sweeping statement about how "unremarkable it is" Some of the most beautiful Seasons anywhere, wineries, finger lakes, the thousand islands, adirondacks, catskills, Niagara Falls, the Hudson River Valley, Lake George, Lake Erie, Ontario and Champlain (home of Champ), as well as some of the best Universities in the country. Unremarkable? I don't think so, if New York State is unremarkable then you must be supremely remarkable. JMHO
SamIAm 03/27/2000
What's up with 3/12."Anonymous"..NYC is not the only part of this state. Niagara Falls, Catskill and Adirondack Mountains, Erie Canal, Baseball Hall of Fame, Skiing, boating, mountain climbing. The incredible change of seasons..Hello, what isn't remarkable about that?!
