Traveling through this state was bloody awful- save for some of the fine music in Nashville- and as others have mentioned good barbeque- the state however is decidedly backwards. Highway litter abounds- obese people from all the bad diets and lack of exercise. And they hate northerners. And please lets get off the phoney religious mumbo jumbo- too many many hypocrits and closet sinners for my taste. And yes there are hicks and obese people in the northeast and California as well- but by percentage there are many more in Tennesee.

very bad state, with trash everywhere, bad traffic problems, sprawling cities and nothing in between, too many closed minded hicks, jobs are VERY scarce, economy is bad, and too many mexcian illegal aliens and taking our jobs. and way too focused on babies and young mothers.

For those who spew forth digs of uneducated, obese rednecks with narrow minds it's time to get your head out of your sterotypical butt and realize that a redneck has more to do with a mindset than geography. Rednecks can be found everywhere -and believe me, I've encountered as many up north and in the major cities as I have in the mountains of East Tennessee. As for the obese and undereducated and narrowminded...yep, we have them...just as your esteemed metropolitan cities have them as well. And just because some of us don't subscribe to the same liberal teachings as others might...well -stop whining and realize that you are being just as intolerant of our right to embrace our values as you are yours.Move out of your box and you'll see that Tennessee has more to offer than you think: If you want beautiful mountains and incredible scenery, fishing, horseback riding, camping, hiking, and history - try the Smokey Mountains in East Tennessee. If you want arts, entertainment sports and music -Knoxville and Nashville are rich with all. Not only is Nashville home to the Titans, we're also the Music Capital of the United States. Both cities offer a myriad of museums, cultural exhibits and Broadway productions. Great education and top medical facilities - Vanderbilt rates one of the highest in the nation as does the University of Tennessee's Medical Center and Baptist Hopsitals. Knoville's sports complex in West Knoxville is a premier facility that can hold it's own with any in the nation. If you're looking for upscale neighborhoods where families walk their dogs and ride their bikes, you'll find them all over the state. If you want specifics, try my hometown of Hendersonville, TN or go to Brentwood or Franklin (outskirts of Nashville). Science and Physics? Ever heard of Oak Ridge? Guess where the A-bomb originated? Guess where some of the most sophisticated weapons are made? Yep...right in Good ole Oak Ridge, TN. The Men and Women who work in these plants are not your smokin joe rednecks but rather some of the highest educated and most intelligent people in the country. Still not enough for you? How about beautiful lakes for fishing and water sports-all three regions (east, middle, and west) have them all. Zoos and Aquariums? Visit the Aquariums in both Gatlinburg and Chattanooga or the Zoos in Knoxville and Nashville. It's all here. Look a little harder, you'll find that most people in these areas are intelligent, physically fit, health conscience and well grounded enough in their faith to not be swayed by whimsical trends that will fade when the next one comes along. Moreover, you'll find that most Tennesseans don't give a rats tail what those who don't really know our state think. We're confident enough in who we are and wise enough to see through those who think they can puff up their own image by putting us down. Oh, and one more thing...yes... we have our hellville's (Dyersburg, No name, whatever)...but I can guarantee you that every other state in our great nation has them too.

Too much trash on the highways- drive on I 40 from east to west- litter everywhere, and the Interstates are poorly kept- get off the main highways- it becomes worse.Lots of poor habits among the citizenry- overweight, and everyone seems to smoke. Cars propped up on masonary blocks- ugh! Too bible belt for my tastes- 'Praise the Lord' ....'Git those Damn Yankees and Libberals' anyone who thinks there is a 'New South' is whistling Dixie.

Not much better then KY-which is indeed faint praise. Trash seems just about everywhere, poor schools, quality of life for children among the worse in the nation. Sure taxes are low- but in the end if you want to play you have to pay. The envirionment here is constantly being raped- adding to the woes of the rather blind populace.

the edyoukayshun stayt!I hate NC, after living there for several years, but i think that if NC took the other half of the Smokey mountians too, then Tennessee would have nothing. Nashville is declining already, and memphis, chattenooga, and Knoxville, never really became one of those high tech New South Cities to begin with. LOL TENNESSEE IS IN THE MIDWEST? SINCE WHEN? MAN THE PEOPLE WHO RUN THIS SITE JUST DON'T GET IT, THEY ALSO SAID THAT PHILADELPHIA WAS THE CAPITOL OF PA!!

A southern American culture- not too sophisticated- hicks/redneck and 'red state 'moral values' predominate. Lots of intolerance toward the NE and west coast- Nashville has some nice vacation opps- and Memphis has some good Bar B Q-but for the most part- Avoid if you can.

My family traveled to Knoxville in 2002 to see the Volunteers play Miami. In the days leading up to the game, we visited Smokie Mountains. What vistas! The surrounding areas of Knoxville were nice, the Tennessee River was an awesome sight. I did think the UT campus was lame, though. They went nuts with 70's architecture which does not hold up well today. Other than that, my visit was pleasant and I plan to see other parts of the state in my next visit.

Great Smokies Mountains (the only National Park in the US that does not charge an admission fee and that's worth a 5 star rating alone!). The fall colors in the mountains are beautiful.

Depends on which part you go to. Memphis is alright. Nameless (which is a real town in Ol' Ten) is a absolute (please pardon the following word) shithole! It's so tiny and dirty and there's a few old people who run the town. And man, are they scary! You think Dyresburg is eerie? Nameless is downright creepy! The women there talk about how they have the right to kill athienians. Athenians is a term for athiests.

I've had the misfortune of living in the northeastern part of the state for over 2 years now, and I can tell you, that it may be beautiful but BORING and NARROW MINDED. Yes, there is mountains, but there's LOTS of places that have mountains. And the wages are PATHETIC. Yeah, if you want to enjoy country quiet, go ahead, but if you want to struggle in the process - well I sure am not going to! And I grew up in New England, which is very diverse and very open-minded. It must be the over-push on religion but most folks here are VERY one-dimentionsal in the way they look at things and life in general. I will be SO glad the day I move here and go to more open-minded, fun pastures. Write to me at TropicalGreen2@aol.com if you want to add comments.

I sure don't care much for Tennessee. I'm only giving it 3 stars instead of 2 because it's a former Confederate state. Anyway, with the exclusion of Graceland, Memphis is a friggin' toilet. And if any of you have been to Dyresburg, TN please send me amessage. I stayed the night there once when I passing through and that was unexplainably the eeriest town I've ever been in. Please, somebody explain this to me.

A good state to visit or pass through. From the eastern highlands and Appalachia to the western flatlands and Missisippi Valley, this state has it all. The people are very friendly, and the weather is OK. Nashville is by far my favorite city in the state. Go see Tennessee!

The nicest bunch of people I have ever encountered. GREAT southern hospitality. The economy seems to be OK, not the best. But the people are nice, and to me, that is very important.

The only good thing is that it's the birthplace of Allan Houston. The weather is decent, but it doesn't top my list for desired places to visit.

I was so surprised when I went and visited Tennessee. I had never been to that part of the country before and I was surprised to see how beautiful it was. I thought that it was going to be flat and ugly. I thought that the people would have the stereotypical attitude of the "South" but I couldn't have been more wrong. The state was so pretty. I went in the fall and I have never seen so many different shades of red, orange, yellow and brown. There is a river that runs right through that is beautiful. The people are so friendly and open. It blew my expectations away.
