hey don't pick on my home state. we're not hicks, we come from all over the nation you idiot. i'm from seattle originially, and most people i know moved in from somewhere else. so don't be a northeast prick about it. dallas is amazing, houston blows, austin is awesome, same with san antonio. the energy and pride in the state is electric, and it's where it's happening. lots of smart people (with all their teeth), lots of fun young people, and lots of things to do. granted it's huge and it takes awhile to get to all of the places you'd like to go, and i know it sucks to drive through the whole thing because it's so big, but it's TEXAS! when you travel overseas after living in texas you say you're from texas and people immediately know where you're from (and not in a bad way). and those who say it's conservative heaven, then i say look at the cities. just like everywhere else, the rural areas for more conservative, but the cities are all liberal, and so am i. i love my state. don't mess with it.

There are still people living in Texas? I thougth they had all been excecuted for taking an axe to their wife and kids or something! George Bush came from Texass too, so i should really be giving it a negative star, but they don't have that option!

Ah ..Texas ...what to say, what to say...I lived all over the state for over 25 years so I feel I have a good opinion... the West Texas are by far the most friendly people I have ever met, so down to earth and courteous...the people in Austin are pretty cool, liberal and all

Texas isn't a great state to vacation at, but it's a wonderful one to actually live in. Great character...Texans take a lot of pride in their state, almost as much as in the nation! Summer's are blazing, so we keep air conditioning on at full blast. But winters can get cold enough to snow in February. A lot of people consider Texas to be separate from the South. Some cities, people will sport accents, others, there's no accent to be found. I don't know quite how to describe what makes Texas so great. By the way, everything steve7138 is ranting about is absolutely false.

I visited there last year, West Texas and the Hill Country. I was surprised to find it friendly, beautiful rolling hills, mountains in the west and really nice folks. They made this Yankee feel welcome
Vindicator58 07/31/2004
Texas is just a big Oklahoma. That is the reason they fight so well!

One of my favorite states. Something for everyone. Beautiful beaches, mountains, desert, flat plains, it's all here. From large cities with culture, diversity, sports, the arts, fantastic shopping and great restaurants, to small, quaint, interesting towns, it's all here. One of the few states with every type of terrain. One of the most diverse populations in the United States. 5 stars and deservingly so.

I liked Texas. I wasn't there long, but the weather was great.

I have lived in Texas all my life and i love it! For those who think that Texas sucks and its full of rednecks, your wrong. I think everyone should visit Texas and if u dont ur missing out. Galveston is absolutely Beautiful.San Antonio is very fun,if u go here u must visit the alamo,6 flags fiesta texas and the river walk. In Houston the space center is awesome and so is Keyma. The culture is great and people are generally friendly and im proud of my texan accent. No state is perfect and Texas isn't an exception. Texas has really hot, humid, and weird weather. Rigt now its in the middle of november and its like 81 degrees and just yesterday it was 52. thats crazy. the only part of Texas that really gets any snow is the panhandle. There is a lot of illegal people from Mexico but they came here for a better life and i dont blame them. I love Texas and if u don't then u haven't experienced it or your just biaist because you think we are all steers and queers but seriously come visit.

If I could give Texas a rating of less than one, believe me, I would. I currently live in El Paso, the latino heavy border town on the western most tip of Texas. Born and raised here, I must admit I have a certain slight fondness of the "hispanic culture" this city shoves down your throat. Other than that, this city really blows. It's harder than hell to find a job here--I wouldn't be surprised if it was the hardest place in the world to gain employment. If you do by some miracle actually get a job, the pay is the very lowest they can give (people get really excited to make anything over minimum wage and professional jobs pay extremely little). Because of the low availability of jobs, workers are often very mistreated on the job due to their "expendibility". The kids (young adults) are totally unhip and the nightlife is almost nonexistent. Despite the fact that it's a relatively large city with a decent population, the general attitude is quite "small-townish". There is absolutely nothing to do here and no room for advancement. (Which is why I'm finally escaping this hell-hole later on this month). As for the rest of Texas--beware! It's full of a bunch of little sh*t towns consisting of ignorant, republican conservative hicks. You'd think Dallas would be cool--it's not. Avoid it at all costs. Houston is a bit better, but not much. (It gets so humid there, you can't even wear makeup or do your hair if you're a girl--it'll all drip away into oblivion two minutes after you go outside. Texas's one redeeming attribute is Austin. Austin is truly a Rose among a desert wasteland of bluebonnets. Austin is quite different from the rest of Texas. It has culture, UTAustin(if you're the college type), annual Bob Marley and Hemp Festivals (if you're the marijuana type), and a great music scene. Here are two things that prove that typical Texas conservatism is at a low in Austin--1. At the yearly Hemp Festival, which takes place on the Capitol's lawn, mind you, people openly smoke pot--and no one cares! 2. It's legal for women to walk around topeless there! (Some feminists got it through--way to go). Anyhow, to sum things up, Texas sucks, El Paso sucks, all the crap towns here suck, but if you must come, then definitely go to Austin.

I just visited Texas for the first time, and I must say I felt right at home. I'm from Connecticut and would consider Texas like a second home. A friend of mine in Texas told me about southern hospitality, believe me Texas has plenty of it. The people and culture are great, the weather is a bit hot, but you get use to it fast. Local economey is thriving, Dallas and Fort Worth are great Texas cities. Bravo and thanks to a great state. The Texans made my stay enjoyable.

Texas is going downhill in a heartbeat, compared to other large competing states. I'm a native who likes to tell the truth, has been all over the US and keeps up with rankings of states and cities on various factors. For more than a century, Texans never cared about their surroundings, quality of life or providing true, humane treatment to fellow human beings, especially those from outside the South or those disagreeing with the state's culture of unstoppable man-made commercial/residential development and non-US born, foreign population growth, while praying in their multimillion dollar, porkbarrel churches (Texans thrive on Christianity--no Jews, Muslims or Athiest welcomed here) for divine intervention to keep this going. A Hedonistic lust for obtaining money and materialism, while letting in and tolerating all sorts of people, many with hopeless, bizarre personal problems and criminal records, looking for loot and continued immorality, while refusing to pay even a little, fair share of taxes--less than other most other Americans do, per capita-- to help improve the livelihood of their fellow common men, women and children. Texas unfortunately is still one of the very few places where the American flag stops flying by popular choice, as the beautiful Stars and Stripes is often brought down from a flag pole, and a tacky, beat-up, larger Texas flag, symbolizing "we dont want to be part of America," is put up the pole to fly instead. Now, Texas is no longer on the radar screen for business relocations and job creations. Texans still hate protecting the environment, litter everywhere, continue their above average crime, school dropout rates, force women by law to have children against their will, beat up wives, and still behave towards strangers with a phony type of loudmouth, unsubstantive, braggadocio friendliness/hospitality to get one's attention so to backstab you, an act patriotic Californians, New Yorkers, Illinoiyans, Floridians or residents of the other 45 states thankfully do not have to deal with in their day-to-day encounters. The state is way over due for a monster killer hurricane like Florida's Andrew from 1992. When it comes, I predict thousands will be washed into the Gulf. The harsh reality is, that Texans just can't get enough of living like trash and dying like trash. "Nuff said."

I was born and raised in Texas, but I left it as soon as I could and have no regrets about that. Being an a-hole is part of the Texas collective conscience. Yes, there are a-holes everywhere, but in Texas being one is considered a virtue. No where in the world have I run across people who would go so far out of their way to try to hit someone on a bicycle. The redneck thing: Sorry guys, not a substitute for culture. Bush's obvious lack of knowledge, sophistication and grace makes him the perfect poster child for Texas. If you like Bush, you will love Texas.
AndrewScott 05/16/2003
I've enjoyed visiting Austin, Dallas, Houston and the Riverwalk in San Antonio. Away from the metros, however, I found the strong "redneck" attitudes unpleasant. Seriously think twice about saying anything bad about "good ol' boy" traditions in a small town bar.

I'm going to give it 5 stars right of the bat simply for George W. But outside of that, Texas really is a great state. Sure it's full of illegal mexicans, but Texas has it all. What other state can say they have beaches like Galveston, historical sites like the Alamo, NASA, Nolan Ryan, and the best of all the Six Flags parks all wrapped into one state? I mean we're talking about a state that's home to not 1, but 2 of the absolute best teams in the NBA right now. And as always....Go Rangers!

Positive Attributes:I moved just Northwest of Houston in January 2002 from Kentucky, and I never thought I'd like it here. It turns out that I was most certainly mistaken. I love it here. The school that I attend is the best that I have ever attended, and I have made some great friends along the way. The people are generally friendly. And it is a geographically and culturally diverse state if there ever was one. From the lush forests of Houston to the desert plateaus of the panhandle, this state has it all. And a lot of history in San Antonio and Dallas! Negative Attributes: Nothing really negative about the state itself- but I think that some things need to be changed here in Houston with the damned mess that the Department of Transportation has created.

aaaaahhhhh! Texas the greatest state in the world! I have lived here for about ten years and i wouldn't wanna live any where else. yes we do have funny accents and we say words like ya'll and ain't and fixin to, but texas people are some of the hard workinest people in the world. and EAST TEXAS AND CENTRAL TO WEST LOUISIANNA is the high school football capital of the world.

YYYYYEEEEEE HAW Cowboys! Home of George Wanker Bush. full of slack jawed yokels and super patriotic SOBs. Culture is non existent.
andyjay 01/01/2003
Hot, dusty, and flat. Amarillo and the other Panhandle towns looked like shantytowns.
lukskywlkr. 12/19/2002
I'm from Texas originally, but I don't live there anymore. But when I come back, I always feel at home, and at ease. I'm probably a little biased, but I think people from Texas are friendlier than anywhere else. I take offense when someone says that people from Texas are all ignorant barbeque eating yokels. That's just as stupid and ignorant as saying all black people know how to tap dance.
Damifino 07/05/2002
Texas has a little bit of everything. Big cities, small towns. Open prairies, lush forests. Vast deserts, muggy swamps. Each has a unique character. Austin is a fine college town; D/FW and Houston both have a certain vitality that I like; San Antonio has an interesting history and heritage; and El Paso is like a whole other world. And every small town in between has something neat to offer. I like this state!
Rusty 04/26/2002
The only state I know that has more prisoners than prisons. Huge state. Never had a real strong interest to be there, although I do respect Dubya and all them thar good folks outta Crawford. Texas is big, but can't hold a candle to Alaska. Alaska's bigger. Give me New York any day!
Priss168301 04/12/2002
Texas is great. I've lived here since 1994 and love it. There could be no better place. There is a lot of diversity and places to visit and millions of things to do.
CastleBee 01/03/2002
Texas has a lot of variety. Beaches, deserts, and the lusher green spots. I spent a summer in Austin once and found that to be a very nice college town. Though the weather was very hot in summer I had been there early the previous spring and it was extremely nice. The nearby campus has no doubt inspired the many businesses, entertainment and dozens of great restaurants in the area. I was college age at the time so it was pretty appealing stuff. I also have visited nearby San Antonio and enjoyed the great zoo, river walk, Mexican market and touring the historic Alamo (the real one, not the car rental place). Dallas is a weird city – kind of has a futuristic metropolis feel about it. But the site of the Kennedy assassination and School Book Depository Museum are very awesome and interesting points – especially if you’re old enough to remember that time in history. There is way more to Texas than I’ve seen, but what I have seen was great!
ellajedlicka21 09/22/2001
The home of ignorant bums and slack jawed yokels (a perfect example is Dubya). He made Houston the smog capital of the world during his term as governor (even passing Los Angeles), way to go George!
TheFreak 09/21/2001
The fact that that stupid redneck Dumbya came out of "Wayest Tayex-uhs" as he says it, has lowered my opinion of Texas a little, but I musn't judge it by it's people. Most Texans are very nice, and it is a pretty state. Four stars is what it deserves, 'cause it's not quite as good as my home (Georgia).
e2bug 06/02/2001
This state has EVERYTHING! The friendliest people on earth and lots to do and see! If you leave here disgruntled, you didn't try.
callmetootie 04/09/2001
Texas is an extremly great, large state that really has imrpoved over the years. I lived there from 1998-1999. It was extremmly fun living there. The temperature which always sounds hot, isn't all that hot, it is in fact a very comfortable state to live in. Downtown Dallas looks beautiful at night, and the lights are extremly pretty. It's no NYC, but it's the closet to it.
magellan 03/12/2000
Big, scary, and culturally non-existant. If it weren't for Austin, Texas would get a 1.
