It will always be home to me but God is it ever in decline.  Stupid politicians are responsible for it going down (Thanks Driscoll).

Koren Zailkas was chronically drunk here for 4 years and she wrote a book about it after going sober.  It is ok in the summer, but this is not where I'd want to be in January.

After driving for miles throughout the rural upstate NY landscape, with all the majestic mountain terrain and lack of development, I was surprised how much of a city Syracuse looked. It seemed like a mid-sized city, much more than a city with 150,000 people. It is a pretty depressing looking city though. It reminded me of one of those impoverished cities in north Jersey, like Elizabeth with a big college in the middle of it. I didn't really explore much while there so maybe there's a lot of interesting stuff, but it didn't look pleasant at all to be in. I stayed at the Marriott there, which was a really nice hotel, but it was in the middle of the ghetto and all the rooms overlook the ugly looking highway and factory buildings. Though it was welcoming to see such a metropolitan, urban city atmosphere after miles of rural land and country.

Nestled between the Adirondacks and the Fingers Lakes and between the Catskills and Lake Ontario Syracuse is located in the Center of New York State. The Syracuse region is a major urban center with all the arts, culture, entertainment, lodging and dining facilities typically found in any metropolitan area. Syracuse is unique, however, in offering visitors a sophisticated arts and cultural scene followed by miles of beautiful rural landscape. It is also a great four-season destination with a wide variety of things to do and see at every time of the year. Many festivals and events, the largest and most popular being New York State Fair, are held each year and offer something for every one.

Syracuse is a well-kept secret, one reason being is the University gets all the national attention. Many newcomers are surprised to learn that Syracuse has all amenities of big city living, but the feel of a small town.Syracuse is the fifth largest urban area in New York State, about the 80th largest in the country.

I've lived in and around Syracuse for the last 27 years. I like it here. It is middle America, small city life. Drive 15 minutes either direction and you are in the country. Speaking of driving, people get hassled when we are snarled in traffic for more than 10 minutes. Driving around the city is easy and free flowing most of the time. There are a lot of hopes for this city, with DestiNY project and other non-industrial businesses toying with the area. Now, if the politicians and city planners can get with the program, Syracuse might be a city with a future.

People from Rochester boast about their fair city. It too is a dump...just not as dumpy as Syracuse. Ick...Onondaga lake is a Superfund site! Oh, did I mention that South Salina Street has become a haven for the NYC drug trade....nice central location to Albany, Rochester, and Buffalo. Syracuse has lost over 20% of its manufacturing business in the last 6 years. The lone consolation is that it is near the Finger Lakes and 1000 Islands. Syracuse is a sad city.

I don't think Syracuse is a bad area, It is just, in my opinion, not as much of an actual city as Buffalo and Rochester. Syracuse is more of a college town. Not much of a real home town feel. The locals are very friendly though, and there are some nice cultural spots. Overall decent place.

I've been to Syracuse. When you are comparing yourself to Buffalo, you know you are in serious trouble. This is middle America. Nothing exciting here.
