I've been feeding our black lab Ol' Roy for about a year, and she looks great. The vet asked what we were doing to make her coat so shiney (egg whites? Special Baths?). Nope. Walmart dog food. For those people who are so quick to point out that we should not be feeding dogs so much corn, go read the labels on everything you eat over the course of a year. If less that 80% of your diet has been somehow directly or indirectly influenced by corn I'd be shocked! Give 'em plenty of clean water, play your dog hard, and give them plenty of attention--your dogs will do well with 'Ol Roy. If you buy and raise highly strung, super sensitive breeding experiments, well, you get what you asked for...

Hi springermoron! Ever read the ingredients? DUH? Any food that begins with YELLOW CORN sucks! So be sure to check your precious science diet and the like because they all start with it! The only foods worth a crap are those that begin with meat (canine's number one protien source in the wild). Most companies have some foods that begin with a real product not a filler and the Ol' Roy Skin and Coat begins with lamb! I hope that your slanted "doggie show" views can take a hit here!
springermomx3 01/03/2009
Anyone who feeds this food is totally ignorant. This is the absolute WORST food you could possibly feed your dog. It would be like giving your kid chicken mcnuggets with a cup of sugar for breakfast lunch and dinner. Horrible!

To whom it may concern, I am very disappointed in Ol' Roy puppie chow, I got a 8 week old puppy 5 days before christmas I fed my puppy Ol' Roy puupy chow and he got saminell posioning and I ended up with a $350.00 Vet bill right before christmas. Yes the vet said it was the dog food, so be careful what you fed your pets. Jenna

I've always liked Ol Roy, but recently thought I'd try "upgradng" to a food called Orijen that is supposed to be super premium, grain free, high protien and all that but it just made my dog have the runs, his skin/coat dry, and runny eyes...so much for getting what you pay for... I guess something in it he had a bad reacton to... maybe the garlic? I've heard thats not good for dogs...back to Ol Roy and he's dong much better, maybe it has lots of corn and "filler" but at least nothing he's alergic to...

The red bag complete nutrition is better now than the past and all my dogs do well on it. I have raised several dogs from birth and they all love Ol' Roy Hi Performance (brown bag) and complete nutrition (red bag) and they look great. My only beef with Ol Roy is that they have raised their prices about 50% like most dog food companies have in the last couple years and refuse to drop the prices back down now that gas has fallen for months now.
sparkie21 12/17/2008
To whom ever it may concern; I'm very disappointed in the last 2 bags of Ol'Roy Meaty Chunks & Gravy bags of dog food I have bought from Wal-Mart. The price is way up the bag sizes have went from 50lbs to 40lbs and the nuggets are different in size. Wal-mart sign in store shows 44lb bag at $17.00 and some cents and the bag you get is a 40 lb bag. I know the economy is not great lately because I'm out of work. But come on. How about running some coupons on this brand of dog food. Please keep the 50lb bags. I have three dogs I feed and always purchase the largest bag. Thank you. Barbara Sparks 111 N. Border ST. And admit it...the only you noticed this brand was because of the price. I'm not rich but I love my dog and wouldn't cheat them of their health...just because a dog costs $1000 doesn't make them any better than any other one, just means you picked a dog based on it's breed and not because it needed help.

For about 6 years, I've used Dinner Rounds as a treat for my dog (instead of for her meals.) She loves this stuff! It is one of the highlights of her day when I give her a couple of pieces. My neighbors with dogs started using this food as treats and they all rave about it. Plus it makes us feel better knowing it is actual dog food instead of the usual high calorie treats. A couple of months ago, my local Wal-Mart stopped carrying it, so I started searching around other Wal-Mart stores. No one has it. Can anyone confirm if Dinner Rounds are still being manufactured? I can't seem to get any return calls from the local store manager. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I have fed all sorts of brands of dog food, from Ol'Roy to Evo to Natural Balance, to Purina, to Iams. I honestly cannot say I have noticed a bit of difference between the "high quality" foods and the "low quality" foods.
ssarahbrown 11/20/2008
I bought this stuff accidentally but decided to try it anyway. BIG MISTAKE. My dog was acting like a crack addict. If I could rate this 0 that's what it'd get. First let me give you some background info. My 11 year old yorkie is a very picky and slow eater. I give him about 1 1/2 cups of food and it takes him about 2-3 days to eat it. When I filled his bowl with Ol' Roy he chowed it down so fast that he was begging for more later that day. He got ridiculously hyper then would crash for hours. He is normally a pretty outgoing guy with lots of character so when he would sleep for 6 hours, I knew something wasn't right. And he's only acted this way since I gave him Ol' Roy. He's been eating it for about 3 weeks now and needless to say, we've just switched him off of it!
Mordhom 11/12/2008
Dont buy this crap, I have tryed it over a few years we first gave it to our lab and well non stop crapping, well same with my two other dogs over a period of 8 years or so, now I tryed it agian since I was low on cash and well I switch him over slowly and well now he cant even hold his crap and he can not hold his s*** at all and he went all over the floor several times in a exloding fashion it was also just leaking out his rear wile he was walking he has been out 8 times in the last hour to... Don't buy it unless you started your dog on it since puppy age or else.. I am warning you the people who have dogs that can eat this crap probley could just feed there dogs diarrhea and still have no problems out of them just because there stomach has became so hard from eating this crap they could feed there dog a boot and the dog would have the stomach to handle it. I will not agian ever try this product again. I wish I could get them to pay for my carpets to be cleaned.. after this round.

THIS DOG FOOD IS HORRIBLE. I had two puppies a bassett hound and a blue heeler. The bassett hound died in three days and the blue heeler is in criticial condition. I would not recommend this to any animal

We've been feeding our dogs Ol Roy for years and they are very healthy. Not to mention the fact that anything else we feed them makes them sick. Our dogs have beautiful coats. There is nothing wrong with Ol'Roy. I love it.

I believe 'Ol' Roy' is Rush Limbaugh's favorite food....oh wait, that's gruel.
melissaklein 10/24/2008
Our dogs only eat Ol Roy Complete and love it but, I have 4 dogs and it is more convient to buy 50 lbs instead of 44 lbs. Hopefully you can go back to selling 50 lbs and we can stay with Ol Roy. Melissa

a small dog toy needs to be in each dog food bag you will sell alot of bags that way
jmiller1215 10/22/2008
We've been buying this brand ever since "Recon"(German Shep./Rottie mix) was a pup. It's the only thing he'll eat. The vet and everyone who sees him says he's in beautiful shape with a very healthy coat. If he's happy, we're happy!

Take a gun, and shoot your canine between the eyes. Kill him quickly instead of slowly feeding this crap! Read the in ingriedients PEOPLE, it's a slow death feeding this crap! Save a penny, kill your dog.........RIDICULOUS!

I got a bag of this dog food and my dogs ended up having problems controling thier blatters and had really runny poop. And my mom also got a bag of the stuff...she lives on the other side of the country and her dogs had the same problem. As soon as we switched our dogs were fine...this stuff is CRAP!

This is a good buy got the money. We can get a 40lb bag for only $19.00. The dogs love it and it goes a long way with the big dogs that we have (Great Danes).

I have three dogs. Two Siberian Huskies and One Basset Hound. I have been feeding them with Ol'roy and have never had a problem. They all look healthy and strong. They always eat their and never leave any.

fed this after hootch lost his hair on purina dog chow. he did just as well on this as anything else. i just don't care for feeding him corn and by-products. not to mention i had to feed him 4 cups of this to 2 cups of ultra premium (innova) food.
horsldy42 09/17/2008
I fed Pedigree for years and my dogs all got fatty tumors/bone cancer and lymphoma. I have been feeding Old Roy for over 8 years now and not one fatty tumor. I have a St. Bernard cross just came from the vet today for an injury, he said her coat was the best he's seen in a long time and that over all for a dog her size and breed she was in phenomenal shape and should be around for many years to come. I have 5 dogs now and if I change them off of Old Roy they all get diarrhea. I feed it dry once daily.
SandysDaddy 09/17/2008
This food should be illegal. Not only has it been recalled like... countless times, they found the junk they use to put dogs and cats to sleep in it. Which can only mean one thing; euthanised pets were included in the ingredients. Which means, guess what? Any dog eating this food, HAS ate dogs and cats. Sick, isn't it? Not only are you feeding unknown sources of meat (that's what meat by-products are, duh) you're feeding cats and dogs. Just the thought alone sickens me. Anyone who feeds this, please note, it was recently recalled. Google it for information.

This dog food is like feeding a strict of McDonald's to your pet every day!!! The dog's hair is dull and falls out in clumps. The dog's over all health is horrible. DO NOT BUY OL ROY DOG FOOD!!!!!!
AleashaC 09/16/2008
The first ingredient is ground yellow corn, I have not been able to locate an official definition of this product, but since it is contained in only one formulation of one manufacturer (Excel Chunks/Mini Chunks), I assume it is the same as "Corn Gluten Meal".
gohabsgo 08/27/2008
My girlfriend and I adopted a dog that some people were giving away. They gave us a bag of ol roy. After reading many reviews on it we went out and purchased Purina. We mix both foods together for a gradual switch. He actually picked through the old roy to get to the Purina.
BF1964 08/18/2008
This stuff is disgusting. I took in a stray for awhile, until I could find it a home. We had purchased some of this stuff for my Yorkie (who sniffed it once and walked out of the room). The stray dog obviously hadn't eaten in awhile, and he took one bite and actually spit it out! It smelled awful, so I can only imagine how it tasted. I ended up throwing the whole bag away.
hamiltonhochs 08/12/2008
Please for the love of your pet, read the ingredients and switch to an all natural dog bood. What kind of nutrion is corn meal, you get full from corn ? The 1st ingredient in your pet food should be a high grade protien, not corn. Not to mention its a common canin allergin.
Love4Dogs 08/02/2008
Why is this food even legal? If I could give it 0 stars, I would.
dduck1947 07/31/2008
My dogs have always done well on red bag Ol' Roy and they like it. I do product testing for AC Neilsen and they sent me an unmarked 25-lb bag of dog food to test. I introduced it slowly as instructed, but my dogs never did take to it. They just nibbled at it and then wolfed down their nightly canned food (which is Ol' Roy). Their coats got really harsh during the test. I found out later that the test food was probably Eukanuba. They're back on the Ol' Roy and they're much more satisfied. So for my critters Ol' Roy is the best brand.

We recently bought a bag of ol roy for our dogs, as my boyfriend was carrying their bowls out the door, he tripped and the food from 3 bowls went everywhere....as we were cleaning it all up we killed 3 roaches with our hands that had scattered from the food. nasty, I am going back to my regular food.

My family had a perfectly healthy beagle. He is fed perscription medication from the vet, milkbones and lean treats from his vet. He gets walked nearly 3 miles a day, gets no table scraps and gets a lot of love. He just turned ten, which is actually still relatively young for a beagle. He had spinal surgery 3 months ago for a herniated disc, and his surgeon said that all of his vitals/organs were fine; he would not have operated on him had they not been.
A friend of the family bought Ol Roy Jerky Strips thinking they were people food. Upon realizing they were dog food, they were given to us. Our dog has been getting them for about a month, only on weekends because we kept them at our beach house. He was having a shoulder problem last week and his vet put him on an antibiotic. He had diaherra Thursday, which we new would be a result of his medication. He threw up Saturday morning. He stopped eating Saturday. He became very disoriented.
We took him to the vet hospital Sunday night. He is in kidney failure, has extremely high blood pressure, and his retinas have detached. My perfectly healthy dog went down in 4 days. He's a very important member of our family and we are doing everything we can to save him. After researching Ol Roy online, I see that several of their products have been recalled and some have been shown to contain rat poisen.
I'm not trying to be mean or nasty about this product. I don't want anyone to go through what my family is going through, or any pets to suffer the way I see my dog suffering. Please do your research. The Jerky Strips have been recalled, but not the lot # we had been feeding him. I was advised by a pet store owner that if anything by that brand was recently recalled, he wouldn't take his chances. Please don't take your chances.

I have five dogs that have been eating this food for over a year. They look great they have tons of energy and are very happy dogs. In fact some people say that two of my dogs are over weight because they are so big. I get them the one that is high protein. I have fed them pedigree, Iams, Ekanuba, and many others and they like Ol' Roy the best. I do not have to put sauces over it or gravies or table food to get them to eat it. Also my dads dog was losing weight and her hair and had sores and the vet didnt know why, they said it was her food (pedigree)so they had my Dad buying food that was 23.00 for a 10lb bag from their office and she still lost weight and her hair and the sores were still there and she wouldnt eat it unless it had can food or table food on it and she still picked at her food. I reccommended that they try the high protein OL'Roy about 7 months ago. She has gained her weight back, she stopped losing hair, her sores went away and she eats it without canned or table food. So I highly reccommend this food for your dogs especially the brown bag that is high protein. High protein will help put on and maintain weight (maintain if they are active if not they can get to be over weight).Remember this, Any food that starts with the ingredients Corn is not good for your dog.

I have seven dogs ranging from a chihuhua to a doberman and all four of the different types of dogs i have do well on olroy. We've fed this for 15 years. We moved from a metro area and for a while I drove to get ProPlan or other premium food. The dogs have done exceedingly well on Ol Roy.
Care2Adopt 06/21/2008
Before we got our sponsorship from Nutro foods, my animal rescue group was forced to use Ol' Roy. It was the only thing we could afford to buy in bulk- so to keep the dogs from the gas chamber we had to feed them Ol' Roy. I despised it. The dogs liked the taste, only because it is loaded with sugar and artificial flavorings. You might as well feed sawdust-not to mention all the chemicals in it from the ground up dead animals they use for meat by product. They buy euthenized and gassed animals from shelters and vets offices and then grind them up, bones and all for food. Its the cheapest way to get their meat, but guess how much of those chemicals and diseases end up in the food? Everytime I see the bags at walmart I shudder. The animal control that I save my rescue dogs from sells their gassed animals to be processed into food byproducts, and Ol' Roy is on the list. It was terrible knowing the dogs that made it out of that hell hole were eating the ones that didnt make it out. Thats nothing to say about the condition it put the dogs in. They all would loose weight except for the very inactive dogs. They'd loose hair, vomit, loose stools, everything you'd expect from a cheap food like Ol' Roy, kibbles n bits, gravy train, etc. They are all the same. 2 years ago we took a sponsership from Nutro Pet Products. They aren't a fantastic food group- they two were on the recall list, they have their disadvantages and use grains... BUT they are better then every single other food in their price comparison, including Iams, Pedigree, Eukanuba and everything below it on the chart. Nutro Max isnt much more expensive then Ol' Roy but its 1000 times better. Take a look at it, or save some and go for Orijen grain free, Taste of the Wild, etc.
SarahatCreatin gHealth 06/07/2008
If there was a rating for less than ZERO stars, I would rate it that way. This is horrible food! The preservative BHA has been linked to liver disease. Corn, soy and wheat are common allergens in dogs, and Meat meal = Euthanized dogs and cats!!!
ajohn252 06/04/2008
Just bought for my two labs last week at Walmart. First noticed loosing so much weight & ribs were showing. Then came the diaherra for the last four days straight. They were perfectly healthy until changed to this food. Now extremely sick. Told it was the food. Hope I caught it in time and they won't die like so many other stories on the Internet.
Alli8098 06/02/2008
I am giving Ol Roy a low rating. I adopted a dog in September & that's the food I bought. She seemed to do ok but it seems like from time to time she vomits & gets diarrhea. I took her to the vet had all the appropriate tests done & she was fine. Just last week she had an episode with red blood in her diarrhea. Again the tests came back normal and a few days of chicken & rice settled her tummy. Now my lab that I got just two months ago had diarrhea last night. I immediately took the food away & there have been no problems since other than hungry dogs. Right now they are on rice & I'll be going to the store soon to get a better brand that will do better on their stomachs.

I have raised my dogs on Iams dog food and never had a problem with them. My parents did the same with the dogs we had growing up. We were nearly out of dog food and I just told my wife to pick some up at the local grocery store as I was leaving on a trip. When I got home three days later the dogs were happy to see me, but they had been vomiting everywhere and eating grass (making the vomit a real nice creamy green) which they had never done before. The next morning when I went to feed the dogs I was not wearing my glasses (530 am and sleepy eyed) and I just fed the dogs from the bin. They gobbled the food I gave them, went outside, threw up, ate their own vomit, ate a bunch of grass, came back inside and threw up the mixture and they were eating it again. I went and looked in the bin and it did not look like Iams kibbles so I checked the garbage and found an empty ol roy dog food bag. I have never used ol roy and do not normaly shop at walmart so I had to look up on the internet what problems might be associated and was actually frightened by what I read as testemonials. I do understand and accept that some dogs might do fine on this food just as their are kids that will grow up healthy eating nothing but cheese pizza and powdered orange drink but their are also those that will get rickets, dysentery, and have nutritional deficiencies on the same diet. I gave my dogs three days on chicken, rice and egg and they were fine after that. I cautioned my wife to check the ingredients listings as most carnivores do not do well on a grain protein diet (some do) and make sure that the primary source of fats and proteins are animal based and not grain or odd byproducts. I am not saying that dogs, cats or whatever cannot do well on ol roy food. I am saying that if your pet has issues with it, likely it is because the last few hundred thousand years of their evolution did not involve the kinds of primary ingredients that ol roy uses and even if it has the needed protien and fat contents it is likely in a form their bodies will have problems utilizing and make even lead to kidney failure and early deaths on their part. If you are looking for a easy diet for your pet their are easy to make recipes everywhere on the internet and if you need to stretch a few days between grocery shoppings do not hesitate to boil some rice along with meat trimmings and add an egg to it (raw) when you give it to your dog instead of buying something you do not know or that your vet does not recomend.

Ol'Roy is the best dog food i have ever used. most of them expensive brands like Chicken Soup For the Dog lovers Soul and Diamond Pet-foods are all on the Re-call list. i myself tried diamond pet foods and it poisoned my dog both of my dogs almost died. i only used it one time because i couldnt get to wal-mart to get the usualy Ol'Roy but i will never buy another type of dog food again i only want the best for my dog which would of course be Ol'Roy! Ol'Rpy has many different varieties of flavors and puppy food to and thats what my dogs get and they live to be very old and healthy. my dogs will never refuse a bowl of Ol'Roy! they also make a variety of Ol'Roy dog treats very yummy for dogs and good for training too!!! i plan on using Ol'Rpy forever and i hope u do to!

READ THIS PLEASE: We've been having our Goldens and one English Sheep dog live to 13 & 14 years old. Old Roy was there main bill of fair. Why? It was rated the number one dry dog food by Consumers Reports. That's right boy and girls, those are the folks in lab coats doing independent testing. Some of the designer brands were way down the list. The report was in 1999 and I wish they would do a re-testing. A lot of folks I tell about the Consumers Union results refuse to believe it. We're Americans and we love our pups and Kitty's more than any other people on earth and dam it the more I spend on the hyped up doggy grub shows I love mine the best. And hey, it's so convenient to buy it right there at the vet while I'm there; don't want her to think I don't want the very best for Fido. So just add on 5 0f those 20 lb bags to my bill. What's another $100 bucks. Wonder who owns the new Lincoln SUV with the WOOF licence plate parked outside. Wonder were the Iams salesman is taking me for lunch this month? Time to feed my big guy some Old Roy with some garlic power mixed in. He loves Italian. Nice talking to ya and hope I didn't piss anyone off. Anyone who is reviewing these comments are good people, but let's remember there are 1000's of people on the planet today who would gladly woof down a bowl of dog food to stay alive.
fireflyshollow 05/21/2008
Putting people down is not a way to review something. State facts and not personal opinions. My dogs get this because it is less expensive and they eat their poop on the more expensive stuff. They have been on many of the "better" brands, and continuously eat their feces and drop weight.
RawDog 05/15/2008
I started feeding my 5 year old German Shep. Ol Roy about a year ago. He looks happier and Healthier than ever. His coat looks healthy and shiny. No problems at all. I mix in a little bit of water into his food and he is one happy dog!
spyandboo 05/14/2008
This is the only dog food my dog will eat. I started her out on the expencive stuff but she didn't like it so I switched to this and she loves it. My dog never goes to the vet besides to get shots she is never sick and is getting a little over weight. People complain because it is cheap but do you always eat the most expensive food out there??? I don't eat name brand food I eat the off brand and I am not starving and neither is my dog. Ol roy is a good dog food.
