Did you ever wonder about the territory that is in that long strip of territory that is the Oklahoma Panhandle? Well here is the story of part of it. Cimarron County, Oklahoma, is the county on the tip of the Oklahoma Panhandle. It is unique as the only county in the United States that borders on four states: Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, and Texas. It has about 3,000 people and has the smallest population of any county in Oklahoma. Boise City is the county seat. The Oklahoma Panhandle evolved as a strip of territory that was left out of other states because no state claimed it after it was ceded from Texas in 1850. It was finally tacked onto Oklahoma in 1890. It was called the Neutral Strip or No Man's Land. Black Mesa, (about 5000 feet high,) the highest point in Oklahoma, is located in Cimarron County.
