The number one stinker on this list. Lousy attitude, lousy performance, lousy with the press. UPDATE: They booed his little brother in San Diego one time just for having the same name... ONE MORE: Oh yeah, Chokestradamus called his demise on draft day. I think that was his first known prediction.

Well, when he said he was going to Vegas when he signs for a pro team, that should have been a red light.

Just to think, San Diego actually debated either drafting Ryan Leaf or Peyton Manning. That just tells you how the draft can really be a roll of the dice.

Here is a guy that has the physical talent and is given every opportunity by his team but yet his mental makeup and immuturity led to him being a bust. Ryan Leaf a Classic Bust!
GoVikes3 04/29/2006
To show you what I know, I thought he was better then Manning because Manning had happy feet when he was in the pocket.

Just bad!

No doubt, THE biggest bust of al time. There was some bust players like Blair Thomas, Akili Smith, Cade McNown, and Courtney Brown, but none of these guys can hold a candle to Ryan Leaf. The San Diesgo Chargers dropped the ball BIG TIME in 1998. And ever since that year, the Ghosts, demons, and goblins are haunting the Chargers.

Let's examine Leaf's record. Following the draft, the Chargers signed Leaf to a four-year contract worth $31.25 million, including an $11.25 million signing bonus. With the high hopes that San Diego had for Leaf, his rookie season was marked by horrific performances. In the third game of the season, he completed only one pass out of fifteen attempts for a mere four yards. In ten games that season, Leaf only threw two touchdown passes and threw fifteen interceptions. He passed for 1289 yards and had a 45.3 percent completion rate, with a quarterback rating of 39. Leaf tended to blame the news media and his team-mates for his poor performances. In one embarrassing sideline incident (which would subsequently get Leaf suspended by the Chargers) during Leaf's rookie year, he was caught on camera screaming at a reporter. Another embarrassing on camera incident involved Leaf confronting a heckling Charger fan during a practice session. Two coaches had to restrain Leaf and escort him off the field. He missed all of his second season in 1999 when a shoulder injury was discovered during a pre-season physical. He was put on injured reserve but continued to make headlines for, among other things, getting into a heated shouting match with the Chargers' general manager (which resulted in a fine and a suspension without pay) and for playing flag football despite his injury. Leaf started the first two games of the 2000 season and completed less than half of his pass attempts and threw for five interceptions and only one touchdown. When the subsequent backup was injured, the Chargers were forced to play Leaf more. However, Leaf injured his wrist while throwing an interception in a week 4 game and didn't play again until week 11. Following more poor performance and injury problems, he was released by the Chargers following the 2000 season.

Ryan Leaf is the worst pick in NFL history, but he just might be the worst pick in ANY draft ever, considering the circumstances. First, San Diego has two choices: Peyton Manning or Ryan Leaf. Then? Ok, give the chargers a break. They didn't know what they were getting into. Now? I bet they kick themselves literally. Luckly they made up with it in the 04 draft getting Rivers, but I like Drew Brees myself. I think he's a great QB. Ryan Leaf? So long from the NFL and good luck in the " I better get my own way" world.

Hindsight can be a bitch! Poor performance and a poor attitude. Ryan Leaf is the posterboy for NFL QB's who can't match the hype.

In a word, pathetic!

Loud mouth bum.

How can anyone forget Ryan (marijuana?) Leaf? He actually probably tried to make it with Dallas and worke harder but it was too late for him.

Hands down, this super-bust of NFL draft picks proved one thing: great talent cannot overcome total immaturity. Ryan Leaf had the greatest potential coming out of Washington State. However, Leaf squandered it by alienating his teammates and fans who believed in him. Arrogant and cocky, he never lived up to his promise- which in turn made him a subject of scorn by the local San Diego media. But perhaps the expectations were too high, and anyone who would even attempt to live up to such was doomed for failure from the beginning- thus the fate of Ryan Leaf.

He's a lot like ugly girls who are nonetheless demanding and bi---y ... people who throw 2 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in a season cannot afford to have temper tantrums with the press. He had that same failure to understand his market value as the women I described above.
CanadaSucks 08/31/2005
Although watching him yell and cry at that sportswriter was priceless.
sfalconer 08/31/2005
Biggest bust of all time, he was a magnet for bad P.R. with his big mouth and had nothing to back it up with.
magellan 08/31/2005
Ryan Leaf is what happens when you draft based on the opposite of the Oakland A's money ball concept. Just because I guy is big and strong and fast does not mean he can win football games.
