Democratic Party

First off, I am going to give both of the major political parties a 3 star rating. Reason being is that on both sides of the aisle, partisanship is running so rampant that we cannot get anything productive done. Democrats complain about the economy, but don't seem to be proposing any efficient programs to turn it around. Meanwhile, President Bush wants his THIRD tax cut passed in the Congress while we are building up the largest deficit in history, leading to higher interest rates. I consider myself to be a Conservative Democrat. I believe that the money that I make is mine to keep. For instance, if, as in 2001, there is a budget surplus, then that money, as President Bush said, "should go back to the people who pay the bills". Plain and simple. I realize that as in the case of the Clinton years it is sometimes neccessary to raise taxes in order to run down the deficit and national debt, but when you have extra money that was given to you by the people- money that you don't need except for lousy pet projects, then that money goes back to the people who gave it to you in the first place. Us average Americans. As a Democrat, it surprises many that I actually understand the value of tax cuts that benefit all- and if the government can afford, then we Americans damn well deserve a tax break after putting so much money into the treasury for 8 years. I commend Bill Clinton for his economic policies, and at first, I agreed with Bush that a tax cut was neccessary to stimulate economic growth. I supported his 2001 tax cut. However, his tax policies in 2002 and 2003 are definately foolhardy. When you are running a war, creating new Departments to fight terrorists, and running up a huge deficit, you do not give massive tax cuts which lead to not only higher deficits, but an unbalanced budget after it took so long to balance it. So I suppose the biggest difference between Dems and Republicans as far as taxes go is that when the government has a surplus, the Dems think that the money belongs to the government, and the Reps, most of them, believe that the money belongs to the people. I'd have to sign with the Republican guys on that issue. John F. Kennedy is the ONLY Democrat I know of in this past century who fought for tax cuts, and I think even hardcore Conservatives can respect him for that. Now let us move on to racial issues. Republicans are against affirmative action, so they are autmoatically deemed the party of racists, etc. Now maybe there are some racist Republicans, but Democrats are no different. Let us remember that Lincoln was a Republican, and his four predacessors were Democrats who did absolutely nothing about slavery- in fact they advocated that. So Dems throw this Trent Lott crap in the face of Republicans- well I say that if the Dems are not willing to let go of the past, perhaps someone should bring up THEIR past indescretions. Race relations is definately another important issue that divides Dems and Reps. All I know is that I do not appreciate going all the way through High School with a dream to go to a University, and then, lose my spot in that university because of affirmative action. I believe in equal oppurtunity for all! On Gay Rights, I side with the Dems on the allowance of Civil Union Laws. As a Christian, I believe that God wants us all to be happy and lead happy lives. And if being with someone of the same sex makes you happy- then have at it! God loves us all and wants us to be happy. A typical liberal platform is "no prayer in school". It the 1st Amendment right of all citizens to freedom of religion and expression- so if I am saying a Catholic prayer in school to myself after a horrible tragedy such as 9/11- I have no problem with a Jewish person sitting next to me doing the same thing. On abortion (see my post on that), I side with the Dems. That is probably what links me most to the Democratic Party. I fully support a woman's right to choose. In the final analysis, I believe that both parties are made up of men of integrity- however, as I get older some of my liberal beliefs are winding down, and I am afraid that I may fall victim to the "conservative fever" LOL. If you read my posts on independents- you know that I wish we would all just follow our own beliefs and vote for the CANDIDATE and not the party. I would've voted for Eisenhower or Reagan. I would've voted for JFK or Truman. I would not have voted for Carter. It's the candidate that is important to me- we can all contribute to the good of our country in our own special way. America's greatest asset is our agreement to disagree. God bless America!
