Riegert made his movie debut the year before co-starring as 'Boon' Schoestein in John Landis' 'Animal House' (1978); he finally made his breakthorugh very creditably in Bill Forsyth's sleeper entitled 'Local Hero' 1983)' with Burt Lancaster.
Hollywood apparently did not make best possible use of Riegert but his performances in 'Crossing Delancey (1988),' and 'Barbarians at the Gate (1993)' were well received with great natural presence in comedies mostly, as in 'Hi-Life (1998).' A sort of John Cusak of his generation.
