I mainly need to learn Spanish so I can watch Dora the Explorer and Handy Manny with my daughter.

Being able to speak Hunnic has not gotten me very far. Actually after a few days of tuning my ear again, I can get along in Spanish. It is helpful.

More useful in some areas than in others, but it can certainly serve some purposes now and again...especially in the workplace, when being bi-lingual is a definite plus.

Deffinetely useful. English came to me as a fifth language. Saying that, I am not fluent in other languages as well. When I moved to USA, English language took over, it bacame essential for servival(so to speak). Before that, when I lived in other countries, that particular language at that particular time was essential. NOwadays, it seems like if you know English , you can menage, half, if not entire world became Englesized(inventing my own words). Either way, another language will give you more knowledge.

But hella difficult if you're learning it as an adult. I've been trying -off and on - to learn Portuguese for quite some time now..just in the case that I ever move to Brazil. Let me tell you, it isn't easy!

More essential down here in the Southwest (se habla espanol?) then in other parts of the country.

I spent about a year and a half in France so learning French was necessary. I wasnt great at it but did my best to communicate with the people there. However I refuse to learn Spanish so that I can communicate with people living and working in MY country! I did'nt know a word of french when I got to France but did make an effort to learn the language.

In today's world, if you know English the need for a second language is really minimal. If your primary language is not English then you DO need a second language, preferably English. I travel internationally for a living (to Africa, Asia and the Pacific Islands mostly) and all business is done in English with very few exceptions (and then those exceptions have been Finnish, Swahili and some tribal language, none of which would ever have been learned anyway!). That's not to say it would not be nice to know a second language. I do know enough in two other languages (but not fluent) to get along, but nothing is really encouraging me to develop more, other than just for self satisfaction.

en los estados unidos de hoy, es muy importa. Hay muchos hispanicos movando a la pais, y no hablan Ingles..... yes, I speak spanish. No. I'm not hispanic. It's actually a very easy language to learn, at any age. Eventhough I am strongly in favor of making English the OFFICEAL language of the US, I still find it very important to learn a second language. Obviously, I chose spanish... I think I made the right choice.

Another useful but not essential skill. I get along in four other languages (Italian like a native, and French, Spanish, and German to varying degrees). Knowledge of a foreign language can come in handy at the most unexpected times. A year of so ago my wife and I went to an Italian restaurant that was really highly touted by someone we knew. Things didn't get very far because as we were ordering, the waitress, who may have had a bad day, said something really nasty about my wife and I (because we were asking some questions about the menu choices) in the Neapolitan dialect, which she assumed neither of us could understand. Well, I did, and basically told her to go shove her restaurant (in colorful, descriptive Neapolitan), and got up and walked out. She was shocked and tried to apologize, but it didn't work. I still wonder if the food was any good.

Spanish is very useful in this country. Other languages are not really needed and sort of a luxury to know.
Wavebacker 10/21/2005
In this country you dont need to speak another language. English is good enough. It helps and is convenient, but not necessary.
Jed1000 10/21/2005
Very useful.. and depending where you live, possibly essential.

I have always wished i could speak a second lauguage. Since I live in the USA it would be beneficial to learn Spanish.I am in awe of someone who can speak more than two languages. I wish I had been born into to a family who already spoke another language other than english.

Americans ASSume everybody should speak their language. It's the youngest, and easiest to learn language. So, why Americans think it is so brilliant is beyond me. English is the special ed of laNGUAGES........why do we think it's so great? I'm learning Italian at the moment for the hell of it.

Can be useful to know some basic terms in various languages. Words and phrases like "Help!", "Where is the bathroom?", stuff like that.
