I suppose we are to rate this country as a tourist destination, (not as a place of permanent living), And I would say if I had to see just one country in the world, I would see Britain. All right, slightly overpriced but so is the rest of the Europe. Rewards, best of the historical buildings, most fashionable streets, excellent public transport system with extremely good network, best of the museums, most beautiful country side, cities like London and Oxford and idyllic places like the Isle of wight and Lake district. Frankly I have enjoyed it each time I have been there.

Ridiculously expensive food, housing travel, clothes, cars, fuel etc. Overcrowded. Collapsing infrastructure. Soaring crime and anti-social behaviour at home and abroad. Warmongering government. Highest illegitimate birth rates in Europe. Highest youth drug rates in Europe. One of the worst environmental records of any developed nation. Life-sucking welfare system. Dirty, heavily littered, polluted. Degraded countryside. Outdated monarchy. Celebrity obsession gone haywire. Yob culture. Materialistic, Status obsessed, class fixated. US sidekick and top target for al Qaeda. Nice place to live!

I spent all of last summer in England and it was seriously one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I adored every moment and can't wait for another visit.

England still maintains a lot of charm outside of London. Sure, it has its ugly cities, but overall, it's idyllic. Most of the Brits I've met are friendly and courteous to a fault, are engaging conversationalists, and have their own brand of humor. The most negative thing I can say about the brits is that they seem to have no sense of direction, i.e., no one in the countryside knows where anywhere else is in England. So, if you are traveling by car, once you get over having to drive on the wrong side of the road, make sure you have a good map and have plotted your course carefully to the next town you're going to. The food is OK, and I guess if you like ale, you're in for a treat. Hotels I've stayed at are always an adventure; some were positively Dickensian. Service is always superb, though. It's definitely a repeat travel destination.

What do you say Old Chap? Ugghh.. That's what I say. What about the royal family or those other immoral British idiots? What about them? Ugghhh...Tony Blair is afraid of the U.S. Just like Margaret Thatcher was. At least the French make decisions for themselves...Ugghh.The people are generally snobbish and smug. The climate is overcast and gloomy which is MOST appropriate. Wimbledon makes me laugh. A country FULL of non athletes claiming their event is the most prestigious...whatever...LOL...Their music was stolen from Little Richard, James Brown and many of the Motown artist of the 50's and 60's. An annoying nation but I must admit...it's nice having a military flunky with that much firepower. They do WHATEVER we say. Isn't Parliament a rock/funk band? Yeah...old dudes in wigs...

English people are not polite at all. They're hateful, rude and obnoxious. They're xenophobic. You know, at international soccer tournaments, there can be trouble, and it is almost always the English fans who cause it. English people are also boisterous and disliked on holidays, where gangs of them travel to foreign countries (esp. Spain) and cause trouble. The English "humour" is very hurtful - MEANT to offend. English people tend to WANT to upset you.

England is a great country. 1.) The Beatles come from England along with a huge list of other amazing musicians 2.) London has to be one of the greatest cities in the world 3.) english countryside is as green as you can get 4.) where can you get better fish n chips? 5.) the people and can i also say to any americans hating england without it america would be undiscovered inhabited only by native indians (although i like indians and all)

I am English and I so will always support it. It is a great country, and it doesn't rain as much as everyone says However i would luv to talk to the guy praising British rail. We have one of the worst rail networks in Europe!

What a terrible country. Hooligans, Nazis, and with a terriblly tiresome love of a monarchy which has no place in this time.

I think that some people need to realize that England has been the closest ally of the US since WW1. We helped them out in both world wars, and now they are helping us out. Unlike the French, who need to learn the meaning of "loyalty", England has supported us in all ways ever since 9-11. Great country, Go Blair!

First things first: I am English, so I suppose I'm biased. But still, gotta love the place. As someone said, if it didn't rain so much it wouldn't be so green here. The whole country is green. Which is great. Don't complain about the English reserve: we're forced to be polite. We're not unfriendly or cold, just reserved. Don't complain about football hooligans, they're just a small minority who spoil it for us all. And British food might be awful (though I disagree) but the whole country is covered in Indian, greek, French, American (McDonalds anyone?) restaurants so you can't reasonably complain... at least we've recognised our weakspots and adopted the alternatives. People do complain about Britain being pretentious and uppity, trying to be a big player when it's not. Just to put it in focus: our Commonwealth covers more than a third of the people on this planet; we have the 4th largest economy in the world and militarily, while obviously not even on the same scale as the U.S., we are still in the top 5 in the world for spending. We're no superpower but our leaders give us credit for international statesmanship. And we're loyal. Size-wise we don't compare with the U.S. but otherwise there aren't too many nations with more influence internationally. UNique global position - ties with America, Europe and the Commonwealth. Slag it off all you want but inconsiderable it ain't.
andyjay 04/12/2003
The world's second greatest country after America. Such a rich history and culture and so many legends (they say they have about 7 ghosts per square mile), not to mention that many of the best musicians came from there. And their food actually isn't that bad. Toad in the hole and Cumberland sausage never fail to please. And unlike the French, they recognize their failings and prestige with good humor and modesty.

I live 'ere! To any one visiting, a few hints: London is great for a few days but it is NOT true England. Great history architecture museums sites etc but unless you have lots of money you will find it very expensive. To me it seems everyone is out to rip off tourists and this is a shame. Also i find a great many people are not british! I know this sounds xenophobic but about 20 - 30% are recent immigrants and thats the official figures. The best places are the great towns with historical sites, the country houses, the hills of the lake district Pennines and Scotland, the "proper" english towns and villages,Pubs that are not teen discos or restaurants.Places that try hard to be hospitable and provide good food, service, etc are becoming more apparent. Please come and remember to persevere: you are always an hour away from a gem of a place . And we do talk about the weather a lot!!

Born and bred in England and have Scottish parents. If we didn't have so much rain, then it wouldn't be so green over here, but you do get used to it! There is a friendly rivalry between England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, but we don't hate eachother. And since when was England a colony of America? If I remember my history correctly, the people who moved over to the USA were from all over the world, so are you sure the USA isn't a colony of most of the world?

Damp. Rainy. Overcrowded. Too stratified for my taste. Cockney accent difficult to understand, duckie. Obsessive about gardens, tea, and maintaining proper decorum. They drive funny. (Use the RIGHT side of the road, people!) "English cuisine" is an oxymoron. They BOIL near everything. Can't get near Stonehenge anymore. Monarchy outlived its usefulness two or three centuries ago. Don't hear about them much at the Olympics, Daley Thompson notwithstanding. They don't like Argentines, the French, the Irish, the Scots, or the Welsh much. They are a foppish little piece of real estate with grandiose designs on cornering the market on the euro.

They are the home of the SO many great rock and roll artists: Beatles, Stones, Who, Queen, Elton John, Led Zeppelin, the Clash, it goes on forever. They're a great ally to the U.S. and their people are so nice and amiable as well.

I enjoy visiting England when I am in Europe. It is a very warm country with inviting people. London is definitely one of my favorite European cities. St. Paul's Cathedral, the Tower of London, and Buckingham Palace are among the many attractions first time visitors should see. When touring the countryside; visit Windsor Castle, Stratford-upon-Avon, where Shakespeare lived, Bath and Stonehenge. They are all beautiful places and only a couple of hours drive from London. It is very easy to get around the country; the roads are excellent. Be careful in London, it is easy to get lost, but if you get lost there, you'll always find something interesting like a pub with really good fish-n-chips. The English have a stigma of being cold people, I did not have that impression, they are actually very warm. Visit the Roman Baths in Bath, they are beautiful and date back to 200 A.D. Nearby Stonehenge dates back to prehistoric times, visit that as well, the history is fascinating. In fact, the history of the entire country is fascinating. If you are going to Europe, make England your first stop.

Rock 'n' roll heaven. I love England. The people there are so polite and friendly...they have this way of making tourists feel right at home. Lyric of the Day: She held the child and whispered with calm, calm, "Belong!". And okay, I'll admit it, my favorite rock group(s) came out of England. And the scenery is so beautiful! There is not a place in England that is not bursting with lush green grass, trees, ivy, and flowers. I went to Dartford when I was ten, and I hope to go back sometime soon. Take care, everyone!

Whether you are talking about London, the mid-sized towns, a tiny village, or the countryside; England is one of the most beautiful and delightful places on earth. This is in no small way due to the friendly, kind, witty and gracious people who call it home. I have been fortunate enough to visit twice in my lifetime and can't imagine not always wanting to return. There are so many things about this country that tempt me to constantly check the current price of a transatlantic flight. For instance, even if you have only a mild interest in history, you'll find yourself in a wonderland here. The traditional high regard of the English for history has resulted in the preservation of centuries of literature, art, architecture, villages and towns. London alone has so much that you could live your entire life there and not see it all. It is literally possible to walk in the same footsteps of kings and queens and others who lived so long ago they seem like characters in a fairy tale. And when you do, the most amazing thought may occur to you - these people from centuries gone by would actually still recognize the place! Since childhood, I have been drawn to the accents, humor, literature, and well, just about everything English. Having built up years of expectation and hoping it had not all been mostly the influence of movies, books and my imagination, I wondered what realities my first trip to England would reveal. I was anything but disappointed. I found that this land of Dickens, Austen, Potter, Herriot, Turner, Shakespeare, the Beatles, of brilliant scholars and romantic poets, an island bravely defended from invaders throughout the centuries and the homeland of many of my own ancestors, is not the fable of my mind. It does exist and, if anything, it is even better than I expected it to be.

Why so much rain? And people are too nationalist, somewhat like Serbs, except that they don't even realise that their country is just a US colony!

The trick, as in any traveling was advance planning. Saving money by staying at the local B&B's (which thanks to the internet are easy to find); the hotels tend to be a bit expensive, and the B&B's usally offer a pretty good breakfast. Traveling around is fairly easy, and of course the TUBE, and the bus system in London takes the worry out of getting around.

I spent a semester of college studying in Norwich which is two hours norhteast of London. England is a truly magnificent country. It has one of the best cities in the world, beautiful countrysides, and true university towns. British Rail is tremendous and you can move about the county with ease. It also doesn't hurt that they speak English.

I lived in England for only 1 year and could picture myself living there for the rest of my life. It had to be the greatest experience of my life.
