Deer is the only big game animal to frequent the state of Iowa (a few cougars in western Iowa, but rumored in eastern Iowa, a few black bear occasionally leave tracks and droppings in the northeast part of the state, but are never seen, and I know of one case where a disoriented moose managed to get all the way to southeast Iowa before some guy shot it for the hell of it). Due to that fact, it's the only one on this list I can afford to buy a license for, because I don't have to pay for an out of state tag. If you get a doe or spike buck, the meat is good and is great for roasts or steaks. A big buck is only suitable to be ground and used in something spicy like chili.

I'm not a big fan of hunting as "sport". In fact, I don't think it's fair to call hunting a sport unless the animals were to be armed too.

However, in my lost youth, we lived in the middle of a 700 acre orchard where shooting the deer [who stripped the trees of buds in the spring] was permitted year round, and as a result I developed a taste for venison.

I know a lot of people that go deer hunting, and if that's their thing, they should go for it. As for me, well, just call me a tree hugger. And besides, I can't stand the taste of game meat.

i would have to say deer only becuase were we live, they are in obundants. that an i have not had the oppertunity to do much other, some day, i am sure that i will have money as well as time to go out and hunt mule deer, buffulo, and bear, but the oppertunities just haven't presented themselves as of yet. i also think that they are may favorite animal to watch, i know my buck this year was very eager to make my stand his, probably, becuase i ha sent lure on, but he was a good sport, as well as very aggressive. all in all it was a great hunt, and very enjoyable.

I can't believe people hunt this beautiful, docile creature. Deer are generally pretty tame, too, so it doesn't seem like it would be much of a challenge skill-wise to shoot one.

One of the funnest animals to hunt know matter how old you are. Its a great beginner animal to hunt, and the experenced hunters can go after the big buck.
