Nirvana 2

I was a teenager in the 90's but never liked Nirvana much. Sure Kurt Cobain had some decent songs, but maybe it was because he was probably twisted on heroin when he wrote most of them. I try my best not to judge people, but people who just cop out and blame everyone else are not my idea of a great artist. (Van Gogh excluded he had legitimate mental issues).

Voice of a generation? Hardly, he doesn't speak for me, and if he was the voice of a generation - what's his message? - Cop out and die? It's not enough to preach the 'think for yourself' (which he did do well) message, you gotta give me more than that, that's like level one in the artistic process. I speak only from secondhand experience, so maybe I am full of crap, but my guess is that any halfway decent ambitious songwriter who has a heroin habit can probably write some pretty decent songs - the drawback,- you're a junkie of course. I don't buy the whole tortured soul thing, that's a load of crap (again maybe I am the one full of crap). If he wanted a break from all the attention he had the money to do it, the reason he was tortured was because of his habit, not because of the attention he got.

I never got into Nirvana. Practically, everyone I knew loved them at the time. It was a pretty big fad. I kind of emphasize 'fad' because I don't think their music has held up well. I do like the 'Unplugged' album, but that was about the only thing I enjoyed.

I was only mildly aware of the group itself during the 90s, having heard "Smells Like Teen Spirit" a few times. I couldn't have told you who Kurt Cobain was, and had never heard of him at all until sometime during the 2000's.

The most overrated band ever. They only had one decent song, and it is the same, repetitive four chords over and over and over with a mumbling then screaming vocal. Yecch. These bozos are also the ones who inflicted "grunge rock" on the world. You know, the bands from the Northwest, bands made up of dudes who were young, healthy, good-looking, rich, famous, getting-all-the-pootang-they-wanted and yet singing songs about how miserable they were and how much life sucked. Assholes.

Man o man, did I play this pup to death! "Nevermind" was the only record of Nirvana's I bought, not sure why, it's still good which means of course that it's real f*cking music. Which is hard to come by. True musicians, like Kurt Cobain aren't made everyday, more like once a generation. When he died, my little cousin was bereft , and my Aunt was dismissive until my cousin said,"He was my John Lennon". Then she got it. It's now my point of reference.

One song Feels Like Teen Spirit was harsh sounding, grungy, but I love it, it has a dramatic quality to it.

They made some good music.I wasn't a huge fan at the time, but it grew on me.A lot of people put down the "grunge" scene, but it was bands like Alice in Chains,Nirvana and Soundgarden who brought back heavy music from an abyss.I think Cobain was an excellent songwriter.

They would be playing state fairs like Pearl Jam if he hadn't put that shotgun in his mouth...
