Steppenwolf was totally one-dimensional, but they were good at that one thing. I like their material with the exception of the political manifestos that they set to music on occassion. They were a key influence on heavy metal. John Kay was a very good and distinctive vocalist.

The vast majority of people (myself included, until I was compelled to obtain 'Magic Carpet Ride' and 'The Pusher' by the reviews here) haven't heard of any other Steppenwolf songs than the omnipresent 'Born to be Wild'. They are actually a pretty good band, and it's sad they should only be remembered for one song, which may not necessarily be their best...

Steppenwolf certainly had other hits apart from 'Born to be wild' and like that very famous tune, they are also utter sh*te, in particular the hugely boring 'The Pusher'. At least they're easier to avoid than cr@p from the likes of the Beatles, Stones etc.which are constantly polluting the airwaves.

magic carpet ride and born to be wild are two of the best, most well known songs of rock n roll history.

A very cool band. The Pusher, Born to be Wild, Magic Carpet Ride, their greatest hits is a really good CD. I recommend it.

During the late 60's,Steppenwolf was a staple headliner band at many pop festivals I attended. For over 30 years now,German-born John Kay has led this group...writing the classic psychedelic blues/rock anthems of our time,"Born to be Wild" and "Magic Carpet Ride",along with "Sookie,Sookie",while selling millions of albums. True legends!
