Great idea, but not easy to implement for most unilingual parents without proffessional help. My kids speak a smattering of French and my daughter is reasonably fluent in Spanish. The French came from immersion classes in elementary school, the Spanish from her mother's new husband.

The children minds are like sponges that will soak in everything. At no other stage it is easier to learn a foreign language than in childhood. Te problem is making it interesting for them; children have a short attention span, and if not properly encouraged, they lose interest.

I'd, personally, encourage it. I took French and Spanish in high school and learned a lot (not only about the language, but also the culture).

In todays world this can only be a plus. Even learning sign language would be worthwhile. I have encouraged my children to learn at least one other language but only one has showed any interest in it. If its learned early on its alot easier.

Terrific idea that I actually practice, but it does take time and a little effort. . .but the practice is worth it since a second language comes in handy at the job. . .
