This is not currently used in any governmental body, but some organizations use it. Several Condorcet methods exist. These methods compare every option, in pairs, with every other option, one at a time, and an option that defeats every other option is the winner. An option defeats another option if a majority of voters rank it higher on their ballot than the other option. (Add picture)

An advantage, wikipedia reports: "...it is possible for a candidate to be the most preferred overall without being the first preference of any voter. In a sense, the Condorcet method yields the 'best compromise' candidate, the one that the largest majority will find to be least disagreeable, even if not their favorite." Merits thought.

This method is another variety of preferential voting. The French scientist, Condorcet, invented the method.

Quite frankly, I think it is very good, but modern people are too stupid to understand it, so it probably is impractical. Read about the Condorcet Method and decide.
