Cheap Trick are one of the better classic rock bands out there. Some of their music is downright compelling and they are a great live act.

Cheap Trick are what rock music is all about! The records, even the newest ones, are spectacular. On stage, these guys are the best. Those who speak unkindly of them must have a warped perspective of the entertainment that popular music is intended to provide.

Good music, but the stage antics were annoying.

They're fun to listen to, but like (new) punk rock, it gets tiring to listen to them after a while.

I just love how some people can throw in their two cents without seeing the complete picture. One cannot rate a band like Cheap Trick based on their work of just the 70's and 80's. This is a working band that still has all of its original members...something pretty rare these days when talking about a band with this duration. Sure, Cheap Trick had a slow period during the mid-80's and early 90's. They had difficulties with their record label which almost bankrupted the band. But those who doubt Cheap Trick today need only listen to albums "Special One" and "Rockford" and their later self-titled album. They have gone back to the basics that made this band what it was and have proven to fans and critics alike that those guys can still rock!! If you loved them long ago, you are due to listen to their latest stuff. Zander still hits the notes as he once did and Neilsen is still one of the greatest rock guitarists this country ever produced, not to mention how underrated Tom Peterson on bass and the amazing Bun E. Carlos is on drums. It is time people give these guys their due. It is time they be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

I thought that they were mildly entertaining in the late Seventies when Neilsen used to do his Huntz Hall on happy pills stage routine and there were a few tunes here and there that I liked. Then the 80's came along and they lost their appeal to me. Their songs got quite dull and toned-down. I recently saw some concert footage of them playing "Surrender" at an amusement park or something and they were not animated at all and Neilsen looked like he was depressed and bored. They are now one of those late-Seventies bands past their heyday that had a few good tunes and hits that just keep trodding along playing gigs at car shows, small arenas, festivals, etc. An okay band but, certainly not an earth-shattering or major groundbreaking one.

Great observation by Virile. I would give them a 3.5 if such existed. On balance, not a bad band....but certainly not great.

In my opinion, Cheap Trick straddled the fence between classic rock and new wave (at least in their prime). The band didn't really break until the live "At Budokan" (1979) album. Certainly "I Want You To Want Me", "Surrender", and "Dream Police" all had new wave leanings and influenced later alternative bands. Nevertheless, besides these three singles, what other material by the band are considered true classics today? Obviously not "The Flame", which was their most successful single measured by chart performance. Given the competition on this list, I'll go with three stars for Cheap Trick, but no more.

3 stars overall, I liked their work in the 70's, they were influenced by the great 60's British bands and The Byrds, and they were highly influential on subsequent power pop and alternative bands. They went through a bland phase, and wound up doing some real, corporate rock tripe in the late 80's. Still, their early stuff is admirable, "Heaven Tonight" was really good and "At Budokan" was one of the best live albums of its time.

I've got all their stuff up to and including Dream Police so my rating's based on this, although I've read less than complimentary reviews about latter albums. At Budokan is a classic live album no mistake and for my money the best Ive ever heard. CT combined great melodies, edge, balls and quirkiness.

Good quality band. Actually, they are the first rock band I ever bought an album of. I was into disco and this dude told me about Cheaptrick. The rest is history!

This is one of the hardest working bands around. They have never stopped touring since 1974! (I have a t-shirt that says so!) Please don't talk about this band in the past tense; they are still rocking and have a new album to be released in 2 months. One of the best live acts--they are truly a band to see live. I lost count of how many times I've seen them--it must be around 70. They have a fun message board, too at cheaptrick.com, of course!

Rick Nielsen, Robin Zander, Bun E Carlos, and Tom Peterson are one of the best musicial talents to form a band since the Beatles. If you want to see a great concert, this is the band to see. Theyre still rockin all over the country. Ive collected over 200 guitar picks and have met Rick. I want you to want me, Surrender, Dream Police, how can you go wrong. They were voted #22 on the top 100 hard rock bands of all time. I named my first boy Nielsen after guitarist. Great Band A+++

most of their songs were candy-rock crap, but they could rock out live. there's talent in there, they just needed to be less commercial oriented.
