I agree with both jgls and Sundiszno. I live where we have Arabic speaking ~ not so much the Spanish. Either way, this country is trying way to hard to cater to others. This is a really sore spot with me since I got into a car accident. The man driving had no insurance and spoke not one lick of English. How can you communicate? Since I was on the Detroit/Dearborn border ~ right after the accident I was surrounded by 6 Arabic men yelling at me not to call the police ~ the man was a good man with 7 kids and living on welfare (BIGGER peeve). In all honesty, I know that the English language is one of the most difficult to learn, as long as you have enough to be able to get by and be in these situations, then I could care less. But KNOW the basics!!!

In my school district paper six pages out of twenty are in Spanish yet we live in America where the primary language is in English. It is a major stretch to say that is language discrimination when the majority of words in America are in English for the simple reason that the majority of Americans speak English. The amount of English only represents the amount of English speaking people, and that's not discrimination.

Igls has it right. I believe that it is stretching things to the limit to talk about language discrimination. Sooner or later, all immigrants to this country are going to have to learn English in order to survive and prosper, so why are we going out of our way to, in essence, put obstacles in the way of their learning by instituting programs such as printing ballots in Spanish, giving driving tests in Spanish, etc. It really is a misuse of the taxpayers' money. There is nothing wrong with maintaining ethnic identity and traditions (in fact, I applaud it), but when government steps in to help immigrants in this fashion, it is misguided.

i don't see this as discriminatory at all; if you live in a country in which you were not born, you damn well better learn the language. it is not the responsibility of the citizens of that nation to communicate with you on your level.

As of XIX teaching Ukrainian or printing books in Ukrainian was prohibited (starting with rules of Russian empire). One could spend years in prison for violating these rules. Now with independance of Ukraine and official language Ukrainan, there is still a government policy as a result of which we have less than 10% of books printed in Ukrainian, and travelling to some regions of Ukraine people are afraid to speak Ukrainian => a nation on its own land can not speak its own language....
