The most powerful superhero was originally given the "power cosmic" by the planet eating villain Galactus to act as his herald. Silver Surfer would find planets for Galactus to eat. When he found Earth, he met the Fantastic Four and they convinced him of the error of his ways and he helped them defeat Galactus. He became a pacifist.
