One of the few truly great songs of the 90's.

*Smells Like Teen Vomit* Most of the popular music of the '90s was so unlistenable, critics singled out Nirvana for unwaranted high praises. Too bad Cobain didn't know who Howlin' Wolf is.

one of the greatest songs of the 90s, not even the best nirvana song, though.

How can this be considered some kind of definitive Gen-X anthem when you can't understand a goddamn word of it? Or did I just answer my own question?

Didn't really appreciate Nirvana at the time, but this music is head and shoulders above most of the stuff put out since. Great song off a good album.

Although considered cliche and a part of any 90's soundtrack for those who enjoyed those great years, it's still a damn good song on a great album- considering the horrible shape of pop music, Nirvana is aging quite well. . .

My first boyfriend was a big fan of Nirvana and this was probably the first song that *I* heard from them; I liked it instantly, even if I didn't always like the band in general. I heard this song ont he radio and was surprised to find that I pretty much remember the whole song and I hadn't heard it in atleast 6 years (I believe).

As the other comments have noted, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" has been definitely overplayed, but one should remember how relatively refreshing Nirvana and this single was back in the very early 1990's, which was filled by the likes of Mariah Carey and Paula Abdul. The single opened up the band's breakthrough album "Nevermind", which really jumpstarted 90's alternative to commercial success resulting in many of the songs on this list getting any play at all. Everything essentially works on this single from Cobain's screaming, to the punchy bassline, to the distorted guitars. The bottom line is that this song shouldn't be faulted for its overexposure. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" charted in the U.S. for 19 weeks in 1991-92 (#6) and has been covered numerous times (the version by Tori Amos of particular note in my opinion).

Not my favorite song from the album (overplayed is an understatement). Lithium is a better song.

Despite the excessive airplay it is a fabulous song!
