As stated above Ray Arcel was out of the sport of boxing for seventeen years, and yet he still trained more World Champions than any other trainer in the history of the sport.

One can only imagine how many other fighters he would have guided to the title had he not been run out of the sport by underworld figures.

In 1917 he took Benny Leonard to the Lightweight championship, fifty some odd years later he did the same for Roberto Duran. Arcel was one of the best, if not the best trainer of all time.

Ray Arcel,who worked with more than twenty world champions,was nicknamed the meatwagon for escorting fourteen of Joe Louis's victims from the ring.During the early fifties,he was hit in the head with a pipe and almost killed,apparently by organized crime elements in boxing. He left boxing for several years,then returned to work with 140-pound champ,PeppermintFrazier, and was then recruited to work with Roberto Duran,with Freddie Brown-whom Duran referred to as the two crazy old men.
