"I believe - when a man's down - KICK HIM!

It'll give him the inn-centive to get back up and make somethin' of hisself!"

- Brother Dave Gardner

UPDATE:

When wingnuts begin to be as critical of the idle rich as they are of the unfortunate, I might take their attitude more seriously.

I think you can and should help them, but you do it in ways that get them back on their feet. You do things that can make them self reliant. It is kind of like feeding the bears, there is a reason why there are signs in some state and National Parks that say, DO NOT FEED THE BEARS! The Government safety net was meant to be temporary! We have a culture of entitlement and everyone wants something for nothing!

not fond of the term Lower class as if someone who has less money is not as good as someone who does. I believe in helping someone who is less fortunate. programs that help pay for college classes to better themselves. and help with getting jobs. if someone is really trying and just need some extra help to get along in this very expensive world, yes we should help them to get by.I would draw the line at those who work the system seeking any freebie they can, have a ton of kids and feel it is the public's job to pay for them.well maybe free birth control but for persons who have fallen on some hard times and need a hand up yes help them so they can get back on their feet.

There is always somebody in worse shape than you are. And you are in worse shape than others. would you welcome being helped? So would the lower one that you could help. We are all in this together, and we will either make it together or will fail together. The outcome is in our hands.

It depends on the situation. There are some that have taken advantage of the system so much that it makes it hard on those who are legitimate and really need the help. I'm all for helping someone who truly needs assistance.

In a free democracy you have an absolute moral obligation to help the less fortunate. The reality is as a percentage of our total net worth and the pure real values donated Americans are easily the most giving people on the planet. It is a proven fact however that as income taxes rise the donation levels decrease. This could be for two reasons: (i) the citizenry believes they are giving through the blind procedures on government and the lower classes are some how a third party's problem (ii) because the tax rates are higher people don't have enough money to spend on donations to charities. I actually believe it is the former. NYC residents are the cheapest when it comes to donating to private charities and helping the less fortunate. This in my opinion is because they feel that responsibility falls to government and since they feel they do the due dilligence through exorbanent taxes they've done their share. I personally feel that is bogus and high tax rates are simply self serving ways to make one self feel good without giving a damn about the people in need.

I pretty much am the lower class if you look at my income, but I do have a roof over my head and a car to drive and great friends and family. There are people much worse off than me and if I can help them I will but I have to know they are trying their best and not just trying to get people to feel sorry for them.

Help the "lower class"? Only if you're still living in the paternalistic 19th century where noblesse oblige was expected of the enlightened "upper" classes.

I'm pleased to say that most of us have progressed beyond such elitist bull. Sure, some folks are poor, and some are disenfranchised, and some are needy. Within reason and within our means we should do what we can to help them. But no one is "lower" than anyone else.

I don't know that I would use the term "Lower Class". Perhaps "The Needy" would be more accurate, but I catch your drift. I have always had a social concience, and at one time I was a strong advocate for "Affimative Action", but not so much anymore, at least not as it currently stands. I prefer to give a helping hand, but I don't want to give anyone a free ride anymore at my expense. Training, job placement or things along that line seem like a better choice, for those able to work. But again, for the truly disbled; physically or medically, I have no problem helping, with donations, volunteering or things along that line.

"Help" means different things to different people. . .if you mean quality access to funds/loans to attain a university education, sure. . .if you believe that "help" is something along the lines of affirmative action, then no. . ."Help" as a catch-all term is too vague. . .There should be some civic programs for lower classes, but I am uncomfortable proclaiming one 'class' being more or less deserving concerning anything. . .

The phrase "Any chain is only as strong as its weakest link" applies to this idea for me. If we are to be considered a great society, than every member, including the poor, need to have certain standards of living. We cannot be satisfied if 99% of our population feels free, but 1% feels oppressed. In Nigeria I saw what it is like when those who have power in society do not care for the lower class. They have no public housing or public schools, and many people go without clean water, basic medical care, and electricity. While Americans debate over the policies that are enacted regarding social welfare, atleast we live in a country where even most of our poor have luxuries when compared to other places around the globe. It is important that we continue to support those who are lower class, because it will only make our society as a whole a better place.
