They started off but not giving us the correct info on installation. When the installer came to set up he charged $125 on top of the hundreds we paid for equip. And to top it off he didnt get to my place until 8 pm and ended up staying until after 10. He was very unprofessional and quite rude. When we questioned customer service they said it was normal, they just forgot to tell us that part. The next day, I checked with my online banking and they charged me $512.97 instead of what we agreed on which was $421.64. So all together they ended up charging me over $630!! I then called and asked for my money to be refunded, they gave me this story about how they would have to pull the sales call and listen to it, and do an investigation. They informed me they would contact me within 5 buisness days. I waited 8 buisness days and called back. Nobody had any idea what i was talking about! I then spoke with a couple of different reps and supervisors and we came to the agreement that they would credit my account $79.99 for May and $39.99 for June. The 79.99 was to cover the May bill. Today I noticed they took another $91.61 and when I called back they said they had taken me off of the buyers program and put me under a lease, so I payed all that money for the equip to be leasing it????? I DONT THINK SO. I would not reccomend HughesNet to anyone! Now Im stuck with them for another 22 months unless I pay an early termination fee! Im so P****D!

ok i don't actually have hughesnet as of now i'm currently running a sprint broadband card. i own my own business and i talked to hughesnet about opening it as a business account. does anyone know anything about the differences? the guy told me with the business package you get a 1/2 a gig a day download cap and that the coustmer care was in the U.S. unlike the home coustomer care which is located "off shores" as he said lol. the dish is bigger which he said gives you better reception and reliablity. the sprint broadband card has a 5 GB limit on it a month and i haven't went over it yet so i figure i won't use 1/2 a gig a day. right?? please give me some feedback b/c i don't wanna waste my money on some dang internet.

Hughesnet's problems run DEEP. Not only is the service a joke--I've had Oija boards that worked better than Hughesnet--but there are customer service issues here that are just astounding. If, like me, you're so used to lousy customer service that you think it can't even phase you anymore, sign up for Hughesnet and prepare to have your mind BLOWN.
The people you deal with to sign up are pleasant, helpful & prompt--and they'll soothingly tell you if you're not thrilled with their service, you have 30 days to cancel without obligation. And the people you deal with at the end, who scurry to satisfy your complaint cause they can tell you're gearing up to make a real fuss, are quite polite & well-spoken. It's the folks you talk to inbetween--once you've tried using Hughesnet & realize you've been had--that are the problem.
Talking on the phone to someone who's rude can be infuriating. Talking to someone who speaks English with a thick foreign accent can be frustrating. But talking to people who speak English convincingly enough, yet don't seem to understand what words MEAN, don't acknowledge important things you're saying, and ask you the same question 6 times in a row, as if they don't realize you've given the same answer every time? I didn't even know what to make of it. Maybe Hughesnet got ripped off on a batch of cyborgs? Or perhaps they round up bewildered homeless, feed em copious amounts of LSD, and tell them, "Your job will be to answer this phone when it rings. The meaning of these phone calls will be revealed to you later, in a series of dreams." At any rate, the point is clearly to discourage you into keeping Hughesnet even though it's expensive and terrible. If you think I'm exaggerating, wait & see! You're in for a long, surreal ride, during which NONE of your questions will be answered, & you'll be stuck holding an unexpected bill with no idea who to complain to, freaking out because now you're sure your sensitive financial information is being handled by someone in the throes of an acid trip.
I don't know how this company is allowed to continue running, but if you get stuck like I did, their corporate hq is (301)428-5500-best of luck to you. Better call that number quick before they change it! Or else have their mom answer & say they moved away.

Make Hughesnet your LAST OPTION for internet service. Even in the country it is so frustrating to be shut down when you have done NO downloading. When they say 24hours it could start from the day before. The 200 limit you get is nothing....you can not do any of the updates recommended when you add a new printer and/or security software because you are sure to enter the FAP. My 12 year old and I just surfed 1 website checking out a beach house we are going to and looking at other houses on the same website to compare and we were shut down until 11pm on 4-12 they included anything we did on the 10th and the 11th to get into this 200 thresh hold FAP...I am going on to the BBB and will not ever recommend Hughesnet or renew my contract for the price I pay. Also make sure you do NOT do hughesnet if you are taking ON LINE COLLEGE COURSES you may not have internet the night you need to get on for your course. By the way we download NO MUSIC of GAMES or we would be totally screwed on a regular basis.

BY THE WAY MY STAR RATING IS "ZERO" BUT IT MADE ME PICK 1

Their service reported 20 kbps on broadband reports. Often it never worked at all. After two weeks of struggling, I canceled the service. I was charged for the period of service and the installation. The initial cost was over $200.00. I was charged months later for a cancellation fee (completely unauthorized) on my credit card for $400.00. So, all said and done, $600 for two weeks of internet service.

It's terrible terrible terrible! They should be banned from business. There is a 200MB limit per day and after that your internet is slower than dial up, if at all. It is a rip off for the amount of money. HUGHES NET IS WORSE THAN DIAL UP!!! If I had known it was so terrible I would have kept my dial up instead of this.

First of all I have to say that I can't believe that there is even one person on here giving Hughsnet a 5 star rating, they must work for the company or something. Anyways I have Hughsnet because I too live in the country and don't have a choice we once had wild blue and we switched to hughsnet because the representative I talked to on the phone said that there speed was compareable to broadband (a huge lie) and that they are faster then wild blue because they have more satalites then wild blue (odviously another lie). After we decided to go with Hughsnet they told us we could go on a payment plan for the equipment, after installation they took the full balance owed out of our bank account.

Now were stuck paying $80.00 a month for crap it liturally took me almost 5 mins. to get to this page, me and my husband are in college and we can't do our homework from here it's sick that we pay that much money and can't even function. If they want to give us dial up speed then they should charge dial up prices!!!!!

If there was a rating of 0 stars, I would have chosen that. HughesNet is HORRIBLE. They misled us that their service was fast (it is NOT) and that we would not possibly reach the max mb that they allow in an hour (which we have many, many times). They put a limit on the amount of mb you can download and if you reach that, you're put down to below dial-up speeds. Extremely frustrating service and their India tech support is of zero value. I would do dial-up before I would do HughesNet again. I'm counting the days until my 2 year contract is up.

I should have read everyones review on here before getting Hughesnet. The guy came out to my house first to check if we could even get it because of all the trees in the yard. Then told me that if I cut off a bunch of limbs from a few trees in front of my house, dig a 2 ft hole , get a 7 ft steel pipe and concrete hell come out the next week and instal this huge satelite to get internet. Now Im from the city, Boston to be exact and I recently moved to The-Middle-of-nowhere-Oregon, where you have to have satelite to get internet instead of cable which is much easier to get instaled than filling a 2 ft hole with concrete and making sure the steel pole is in perfectly or it wont work right. So this guy comes out the next week, takes up 3 hours of my time just for us to get online the second he leaves and watch as the red light on their nifty website comes on and saying that we already went over our limit for DLing the crappy 200 mbs for the day. So my fiance calls the crappy customer service line only to talk to a habeeb from India who cant speak a lick of English, why would you want Americans to go through that, oh yeah cause its all about the friggin money. So she yells and screams at the idiots for say 2 hours, nothing happens on our behalf. We wait it out again for a few hours and the internet kinda gets faster, but then we find out between 3am and 6am you can DL anything for free. Well thats great for me since my 3 month yro infant wakes up at that time. So that night things go as planned and low and behold, the red light is on again. SOOOOOOOOO pissed off again and out for blood my fiance calls again. This time they say its the computers updating system. B-S! Since the computer updates at 3am every morning how the hell can it be that, arnt we gettin a chance to DL for free at this time? The guy went through 3 different answers before my fiance tore him a new A$$ Ho)e lol and then after waiting yet another hour before talking to a guy that sounded like he was from America cause of his southern accent, we made some peace. So 4 days later here I am with my huge complant to Hughesnet, and for everyone else to see that it is not the way to go. I will listen to some of you's who went and got a Card for the internet since we have laptops, im sure that'll be better than this crap!!!!

Hughes net is one of the worst. They have a very long commitment and give very little in return. I signed up for their commercial account program only to find that in rain I had nothing. If it rained on their end I had nothing. They had lots of downed time or slow times which I got nothing for but had to pay the full price. They don't tell you that it isn't unlimited use. You can only download a certain amount each day and if you exceed it your cut off without any warning. If you have issues you have to talk to someone overseas and jump through hoops with someone who barely speaks English to attempt to resolve them. I would not recommend them due to price issues too. They are very expensive and there are other alternatives like a plug in USB card through many other Internet providers that are much cheaper who are not effected by weather.

Hughes Network Systems LLC, AKA HughesNet is by-far the worst company I have ever dealt with. My experience with them has been a nightmare.

Their advertising is false. I live in Arizona, a rural area. I had Verizon EV-DO that no longer worked well because I moved. Seeing the ads on TV about HughesNet's faster service, faster downloads, it seemed this was an answer to my need. NOT!

I signed up in June 2008. I have been having inconsistent download/upload speeds since mid-August and it has progressively gotten worse. I finally got fed up and called technical support on Jan. 13, 2009. I have been on an endless loop since.

I now have eight Case Numbers. I have been to Level 3 twice. The local service company has been to my place four times. The last time he came, after an hour being here, reported that technical service nor he could find anything wrong." So I ask, then why can't I open my email account, and why can I not open most web pages?" His response, "I don't know."

Shortly after not being able to access the internet for two days, I called technical services, again. I told the representative I want to cancel this poor service and he transferred me to Customer Care Compliance. She told me that I would have to pay $300.00 to cancel my contract. I told her I will not pay $300.00 for my cancelling poor service. I asked her to explain the logic of why I should pay for poor service. She replys, "because you have a contract with us." I say, "but you are not providing a decent service." She could not explain it logically to me and transferred me back to technical services. It never ends, NONE of these outsourced people will listen or be able to explain this logically.

I found the headquarters for HughesNet, if anyone want to contact them:
Hughes Network Systems LLC
11717 Exploration Lane
Germantown, MD 20876
301-428-5500

I am in the process of call the headquaters, filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and Arizona's Attorney General. I am also looking for an attorney who will file a class action against this monster of a company.

I got a flier in the mail today, actually 3 of them at the same address! I was seriously going to purchase this but thought I might want to do some research on the company first.
Glad I did. I've got no choice but to get dial up through my local telephone company. I guess that's got to be better than dealing with the issues everyone else has had with hugshnet.
Glad I saved myself from a lot of grief.

Having moved from the Silicon Valley (San Jose, Ca) to the Lake of the Ozarks in Misssouri, we fell for HughesNet's ads and signed up for the small business package. What a disaster! It never has delivered like they advertised. Slow, slow, slow. My wife telecommutes through a VPN in her office in Ca. and it was so slow that it timed out constantly. It is usually not much faster than dial-up, contrary to what HughesNet says. We subscribed to Go to my PC hoping that would help: it didn't. We then subscribed to a Verizon air card and that was a great improvement. Not as fast as DSL, but at least she can now work at home, rather than going into town to a WiFi location.
I was so disguisted with service from HughesNet that I looked in to bringing a T1 line to the area where I live. I got with neighbors and they came aboard and we now have true Hi-Speed Internet to our homes. Stay as far away from HughesNet as possible. Go to an air card: cheaper, faster and better customer service.
My next battle is to get out of my 2 year contract with Hughes.

I HAD hughesnet. The dish is laying out in my backyard where it belongs. I paid 1500.00 for that freaking dish and 116.00 a month for their stinking service. WHY is this company allowed to get away with theft and fraud?? WHY are they not sinking in this failing economy?? I mean I do not wish anyone to lose their jobs do not get me wrong but these ppl do not belong in business when they rip ppl off the way that they do. It makes NO sense to me. So anyway...here is a little tip for you ppl looking into the aircards. I am pretty bitter about THAT right now too. grrrrrrr I have been using Sprint's aircard for 14 months now and have been really happy with it. Speed is fast, no complaints until NOW. I signed a 2 year contract and was supposed to have "unlimited" service. No mention was EVER made of roaming. Ok...last week we noticed that our service was slower than dialup and we could not acess webpages a lot, much like hughesnet was/is doing to it's customers. We just figured it was the weather since we had been having a lot of snow and cold temps. Well, then I get this letter from Sprint saying that they had been "monitoring" me and for the last three months they noticed that I had been roaming almost constantly and per my contract agreement this was not allowed. hmmmm I did not recall that. Well, I called Sprint and the lady I spoke to says that they "just started this new thing a week ago" (from when I received the letter) and that they are now "limiting usage" and that if I want to I can terminate my contract with no fee and she will even credit my account one month. HELLO?? I want my internet service just the way it was!! If it ain't broke, don't fix it. WHY do these stupid companies have to do this crap??? I am so mad right now. So I am looking into maybe going with Verizon. *sigh* good luck you guys...

Well after threatening lawsuits, police intervention and contacting the Better Business Bureau twice I was finally contacted by a very lovely, English Speaking(finally) lady from the Executive Offices of Hughes Net who has agreed to refund all my initial startup costs and the 324.00 that they just took from me for not sending their equipment back in time. They are also sending pre-paid postage for me to return the parts they do want back. I cancelled my service less than 48 hours after I signed up for it almost 2 months ago. I ended up with Hughes Net through Direct TV and was never contacted by a Hughes Net Rep ,ever, before they came to install it and charge me over $175.00 to do so. It was terrible service, just my computor updating itself used up all my usage and I couldnt even get on the Internet!! Needless to say I immediately called Tech support and was told I had exceeded my usage for that 24 hours! I screamed and told them to cancel me out and then I was told I could do that with no penalty but....with no refund except for the unused month I had been pre-billed for minus the 0ne day I did use it!! OMG, then I was told I had to climb up on the roof to get the transmitter they wanted back and mail it back with the modem at my cost!! Not acceptable especially in the middle of Winter!! I'm giving them a better than terrible rating because of the refund. As with any contract you MUST read the fine print. I however was never shown any before it was slapped on my roof or I never would have agreed to it. In some ways, I blame Direct TV a little for not being better informed about the companies they hook their customers up with as they seemed totally shocked when I called them complaining about Hughes Net Service. My full name is viewable in this review so either company can see that I have nothing to hide and I am available to speak to either one regarding my review!!

Anyways...Better Business Bureau is the way to go, Hughes Net is a member and will work with you to make you happy if you stay on it!! They are not total Monsters just a little lax in the customer relations area!

Don't bother, not as good as your local cable provider, they limit the amount of time u spend on the internet for a basic package. Connection speeds are VERY LOW..... Not good if you like to download music or movies.... Spend less and go elsewhere!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have had Hughesnet for over 2 years. I cannot wait to get rid of it. Satellite in general is not competitive to cable or DSL, but the Hughes FAP probably makes them the worst among satellite providers. I live in a rural area, satellite and wireless are my only options.

Hughes FAP is terrible, I have the 1M bps service $69.00 month. When I go over 375MB in a 24 hour period, my sevice goes to about 20k bps for 24 hours. This is true even though on average I use 1-2MB a day. 375MB is not as much as it seems, I was trying to stream the HBO Obama special, after about an hour I was over the limit. My internet was useless for 24 hours. (Right now I am in the stuck with FAP penalty speed I am writing this review over a VERY SLOW connection, but I am angry).

I am debating on switching to WildBlue. Their FAP limit is about the same, but it is a rolling monthly average. I don't want to buy new equipment, satellite is terrible when using a VPN. Using satellite to work from home is very slow.

I considered using an ATT wileless connection, but if passed their limit of 5GB a month, I could ge a bill with $100's of dollars of fees since they charge .25 a MB over the limit.

I hope something else will come to my area soon.

Please, please do not get tangled up with Hughesnet if you have ANY other options. It is only marginally faster than dial-up and a lot more expensive. It's a nightmare to get out of it.

If you can get a mobile phone signal in your location, their wireless card will be twice as fast without nearly the set-up costs & equuipment rental costs, etc, etc.

My experience: I was very satisfied with my wireless card (I personally use Verizon so I can't verify other mobile phone companies, but they are probably similar). However, I wanted to put my office in a basement that didn't get the phone signal. I had Hughesnet install the system.

1. It was not nearly as fast as my wireless card.
2. It would go out at really inopportune times and the signal would not come back on for hours.
3. I tried to watch a couple of news video. They wouldn't play. Since this was supposed to be "high speed" I just assumed something needed to be adjusted. Boy was I surprised! When I call Hughesnet, they said they didn't guarantee that anyone could get video. That wasn't a part of their "high speed", I guess. Got no help there.
4. When I tried to cancel, apparently I was a couple of days past my cut-off for cancellation without an exhorbitant cancellation penalty.
5. Finally cancelled last week (eleven months left on contract) with a penalty of $449.00! But that was still better than paying for another eleven months. I intend to fight this further, but that's how it stands today.

I really wish I had come to this site first! If you're considering going with Hughesnet, read a few of the reviews. The few good reviews look suspiciously like plants from Hughesnet, but maybe there actually IS someone out there that's satisfied, but I seriously doubt it.

Oh, boy. Where do I start? This whole thing was so bad it's hard to even describe.

1. Don't expect reliable service.
2. Don't expect customer service.
3. Don't expect help.
4. Don't expect support.
5. Don't expect them to care.
6. Don't expect a refund.
7. Don't expect fast speeds at any time when you might actually be online.
8. Don't expect them to stop billing you even after you cancel.
9. Don't expect to be able to download anything much.
10. Do expect to be ripped off.
11. And just in case you missed that last one... Do expect to be ripped off.

Poorly managed, poorly run, disgraceful customer service, and possessing a criminal rip-off attitude toward their customers.

Update:
After four months of disputing their charges, getting the catch 22 run around from their billing/technical department, writing letters, filing complaints with the FTC and the BBB, my dispute with them is finally resolved.  They won't dispute it with you through your credit card company, all they do is ignore that and then send it to their bogus collections.  Don't let them bully you.  Their collections is mostly toothless, but a real aggravation.

It was the BBB complaint that finally resulted in a conversation with a real person who could actually fix the problem.  And they did, to their credit.  But, seriously, no company worth dealing with would have let it go that far.  Sad really.

PS
To those few who have rated Hughesnet so highly...  After being a customer of theirs before it was even Hughesnet, way back when it was Direcway, I was more than familiar with the limitations of the technology.  And back then it wasn't great, but it worked and they tried.

After it became Hughesnet, I spent way too much time on the phone with India to "fix" problems that weren't really my problems, but rather failures in their service. I strongly suspect those few glowing reviews are from Hughesnet themselves.  And, no, I am not a competitor for Hughesnet, and somehow I don't think the majority of the 54 reviewers who rated them "terrible" are either. Talk about deceptive.

You can also type in "Hughesnet Sucks" into any search engine and find even more horror stories.

Dear Hughesnet,

If you ran your business well and treated your customers with respect you wouldn't have all these irate reviews.  It makes more sense than trying to run around doing damage control on sites like this.  Get a clue.

Hughes Net is a nightmare. It is SLOW REALLY SLOW, When you call customer support you get to hear about the weather in India. They keep you on the phone for an hour and a half while you turn your pc on and off and check for spy ware, clean your temp. files, and then they finally tell you to do speed tests for 3 days, and call back to talk to a level 3 tech. support (I think there's 5 levels). You never seem to get anywhere. The time you waste on the phone is just not worth it. You might as well keep your dial-up, because in the end its faster! Not to mention cheaper. And their FAP (Fair Access Policy) is such a scam. If you go over 200mb in a 24 hour period your speed is reduced to less than dial-up for 24 hrs. I am looking into Aircards, and plan to cancel Hughes asap.
p.s. I will be selling my hughes hardware if anyones interested. HA

It is obvious that Hughes Net monitors this site; and from time to time they also (rate themselves)... The truth is, their reception is terrible, service is worse. No one speaks english except the people selling the service (???) to you. They lie, cheat and steal from you. Their add is down right disceptive and devious. The two reviews that preceed this, both five ratings were probably written by their employees... shame on you for lying! If your service is that good, there is no question you have not exceeded their Fair Access Policy... Of course, if your 92 and just use it for email, maybe a joke now and then, it will be fast enough. If Hughes Net is so good, why not challange the negative reviews on this page and offer a six month money back guarantee. Why not just say we know you will be happy or your money back...

We no longer have this terrible service, haven't had it for well over a year. You ask why I still care? Because companies like this rope you in, lock you in and steal all they can, as long as they can. Their fair access policy is a sham that should be exposed...their company is a sham and sooner of later will be exposed. Just as   AT&T and Cingular were forced to give refunds, this company should also.      BEFORE TRYING (COMMITTING) TO THIS (DIS-SERVICE) CALLED HUGHES NET, CEHCK BOTH CINGULAR, ATT, AND VERIZON AIR CARDS. Our business switched to air cards (we didn't think they would work) but THEY DID! As a matter of fact they work very well!      Example, we are located in Missouri and as we speak, we are in the middle of an ICE STORM...This is being sent during the ice storm. I honestly can't ever remember this service going down! Hughes Net would have been down as the clouds rolled in...much less when the ICE CAME!      From time to time Hughes will send their employees to this and other sites...

DON'T FALL FOR IT, THEY LIE!

I have HughesNet in the middle of Texas and I love it. Got a great deal with www.infodish.com and was very surprised to hear so many people giving Hughesnet a bad review. I think people giving them a bad review have either unrealistic expectations. Of course there are problem, but to be fair, SatIn is without a doubt better than dial-up and for people like me who really don't have any options, HughesNet and the customer services and benefits of InfoDish.com is a life saver. I have friends who got SatIn and had problems with VPN and gaming and ask a tech friend about it and he told me that SatIn was never design to work that smoothly with VPN and gaming. Do your research before you select it and then blame somebody else for your obvious negligence. Maybe most of these reviews are agents of DSL or cable companies? Deception is powerful, but knowledge is priceless.

I live in a very remote area that has no hope of DSL or Cable service anytime soon. I saw the ad for Hughesnet on TV and thought this could be my way into the modern highspeed internet. The installation was a bit pricey and I thought it was odd the installer refused to mount the dish on the house. Instead he insisted on securing a wooden post in the ground with contrete. After a quick setup for the modem I was ready to try it out. I loaded a few websites and the speed was very impressive. So much faster than my dialup ever was. I am now 3 months into my service and have not had any issues at all. Using speedtest.net I consistently measure my connection between 500-650kbps. It seems suprisingly tolerant of weather interference with only the densest of cloud cover slightly slowing the speeds. I called customer service about a month ago to upgrade my service as I have come close to the Fair Access Policy limits a few times and didn't want to have my connection slowed. The representative was very polite and helpful even though he did have a strong accent.

As for dolar for bandwidth goes this is no bargain. However for those with no other option it is far better than dialup. I can only assume the other that have had such harsh complaints either had unrealistic expectations or they are possibly novice users who may not really understand what they are saying. Maybe they are even working for the cable and phone companies and posting these as propaganda as I noticed one user was named "Verizonfios" a high end fiber connection from Verizon. Either way if your considering this service please disregard these reviews since they are obviously misinformed and uneducated people or just plain false. Hope this helps.

Worst "customer servce" for any business of any type anywhere.  Subcontinent people trained only to be ignorant, interminable waits, multiple requests for indentification as you as passed from the ignorant to the uninformed. Semi-annual e-mail upgrades causing unavailability nad massive slowdowns for hours to weeks! And daily "fair access" limits that are a depth of "CS" reached only in the satelite world.

Out with 'em. Howard would beat them like step-children if he were still around.

I just read all the reviews until I was sick. Oh, BTW, In order to leave a rating I had to pick one star - zero stars or less is my rating.

Yesterday, before bothering to read the reviews, I called them up. First, they wanted to know a bit about my machinery and current connectivity. I told them that it's none of their business - I only needed a connection. They asked what version of wyndoze I had. I said I needed an Internet connection and it doesn't matter what kind of operating system I have or how old my computer is. They said it did - bull.

I asked what the speeds of their service were. The fastest they have is 300Kbps up and that's it.

I asked them if their service will support connection oriented protocols and they didn't know what I was talking about so they put me through to a supervisor. He didn't know what a connection oriented protocol was either, and stated he'd worked there for over three years. hmm... never heard of Telnet, sure dude. One of the most basic of all Internet protocols along w/FTP and SMTP.

He stated (His name is Corey) that he was the supervisor and there wasn't anyone to connect me to in order to answer my question since he was as high up and the most expert person at hughes I would be able to talk to.

I decided that if they lie like that and can't answer the simplest of questions regarding the type of service they provide, then it's indeed a scam and I'm not buying it.

I'm going to look into verizon broadband cards or the new at&t version of the same thing.

Too bad there isnt a -star! If your thinking about it, don't and give your dial up/modem a hug and appreciate your "sounds of nature". I had Hughes net installed, there were lots of extra install fee that they dont tell you about. It worked for MAYBE 45 min, spent (no lie) 2 days and no less than 45 calls to Tech Support (in India and no one speaks english or knows squat)-try calling a local state side office for help-GOOD LUCK WITH THAT! They threaten you with more fees if you cancel-I had to close my bank account to make sure they couldnt STEAL my money. Make take another 3 years to get braodband ro DSK out here, but Ill wait tyvm and go to Starbucks if I need a faster connection. SOMEONE needs to start a class action suit against these folks!

Hughesnet is the worst internet service I have ever had (including dial up). I had service in Oct. 2008 with the new 9000 modem. I support over 35 DSL connections, 20 dialup connections, 3 cable connections, & several other high speed connections. I needed this so I would not have to drive to the office in the middle of the night when a site is down. Needless to say, I wanted this to work, but I am back to driving to the office.

This service is a little faster than dialup loading normal plain HTTP pages (on a clear day). Any kind of secure traffic or clouds, and you are better off running dialup (secure traffic examples, 1. Logging in to ebay, 2. Citrix connections, 3. Logging in to any bank, or 4. Any kind of VPN connection hardware or software). This connection on a good day is slower than the slowest DSL or cable I have ever found. I called customer support and they stated secure traffic was slow and gave the old thing about the firewall and virus checker needing to be turned off (unless you have a slow system, this is useless). I ask if changing to a higher speed service plan would help answer - very little.

Customer support has long wait time and no one speaks English clearly. My suggestion is only expect help on the simplest of issues.

If you choose to cancel, expect to lose most of the money. Their 30 day guarantee is a joke. The only installation charge you get back is $199 for the equipment. They stick you with the installation of $199, and they will want to send someone out for an additional $100 to dismantle the unit. Also, look to have your service for the first month prorated based on your days your service is active. They were quick to point me to their fine print until the fine print stated 60 days to return the equipment, which they changed to 45 days.

Also, note their Fair use policy limits and what it will do to your already slow speed. Downloading 2 windows service packs and you may over your limit.

I only rate this a one star because this site will not allow zero stars.

Hughes net advertises high speed internet (1.5 MBPS). It is not even close. It is maybe 300 mbps on a perfectly sunny clear summer day. If the weather is bad or even overcast or cloudy, your speeds drop dramatically, and sometimes service is even stopped for periods of time. If its raining forget using the internet at all. If it is windy, it blows the dish around and loses sync with the satellites, then you have to try and re-sync it yourself (this is a night mare even for a tech savvy person like myself).

The speeds are comparable to a little faster than Dial-Up. They advertise a web accelerator. I call it an imaginary web accelerator. It gathers information from the satellite, holds it in the modem channel, and then at the last minute bursts it to your computer so the computer thinks its High Speed internet, when in reality, its latency is so bad, you sit there waiting for web pages to open for long lengths of time.

Their Fair Use Policy limits your downloads to 425 MB per 24 hour period. That is less than half of the data on an old CD ROM. You cant even watch 30 minutes of video from YouTube without violating their Fair Use Policy. It is not much data at all, and we found ourselves frequently going over the Fair Use Policy limits. The -penalty for this is slowing your speed down to slower than Dial-UP for another 24 Hours. Relentless calls to customer support yielded nothing. Long wait times, never an English speaking representative. They are all Indian with fake American names and very difficult to speak with. They always suggest monitoring your usage by going to their website to make sure you dont go over your limit. The problem with this is their web site reports the usage 2-4 hours late. So if you are watching your usage, it is so inaccurate we still went over the limit.

When we called customer service (went through a maze of prompts and got transferred all over the world to a multitude of different people while waiting for hours) could not help. When we complained about the lack of speed they said they only advertise Up to 1.5 MBPS. Their answers to our complaints are disclaimers. They say they have a disclaimer etc Once we decided to cancel our service we were charged with a $300 dollar cancelation fee. We again called customer service, got transferred all over the world, (never spoke to an American-only Indians with fake American names that are difficult to speak with) only got threats of sending us to a collection agency.

Do not subscribe to Hughes net. The co$t of the equipment and service is outrageous; you are better up using dial up. The service is terrible, and customer support is even worse!!!

I'm not rating just Hughesnet, but All brands of satellite internet. If you live in a rural area where the only option is dial up or satellite - You may be eligible for an aircard. If you are able to use a cell phone, inquire with you cell phone provider about one. It's a 3g laptop broadband connect card that also works on desktop computers -(I got mine through AT&T)- I notice it has speeds of about 100 times faster than dial up compared to the "10 times faster than dial up speeds" that you are guaranteed from satellite (when the weather is nice of course). The aircard very nice and I was surprised to get one here. ( I live about 50 miles outside of ST. Louis, MO in a forest and it works dandy). Contact your cell phone company to see if you qualify.

I only clicked on one star because there is nothing lower - which, in my opinion, Hughes Net is. Like others posting here, I have Hughes Net because I run a graphics intensive business out of our rural home and must have high speed internet connectivity.

When it works, it works. When you have a problem - good luck! My modem went dead 8 days ago and after several hours on tech support (which is overseas and totally USELESS), having my order for a replacement modem cancelled twice and ending up paying $199 to have a tech come to the house to replace the modem (supposed to be a 24 hour service but ended up taking 4 days) - the tech walked in the door, said "I bet it is the power supply, they know this particular power supply goes bad all the time" Yup, that was the problem. Hughes Net is obviousley aware of this issue and does not give a tinkers dam about it. I forced the tech to at least replace my modem with the new one he brought with him - after all, I had paid for it.
Hughes Net SOOOOOO needs a makeover!!! Horrid.

I have hughesnet and not trying to encourage anyone in anyway about chosing a satelite IP. I moved into a rural area where cable or DSL was not avaliable so, I went with hughesnet. Its got to be one of the biggest mistakes I ever made. This is a awful service. It took me over 10 minutes just to load this page for over $60/month. I'm not one to complain about much but, this one takes the cake. Customer service is somewhere across seas that will tell you to call a number the next day. Guess what, Its not a valid number or someone that tells you the same thing. I've put up with this for awhile now and encourage anyone not to do it. When the contract(big mistake) ends. This is one company I will not do business with again.

HughesNet is the absoloute worst broadband available. The advertised speeds are nothing short of a daydream. Customer service? What customer service? After your first call, and I promise you will call, then, you will agree. Check out the Hughes Net Forum on www.dslreports.com to see what other users are going through. I have warned as many people as I can about the false advertising and poor service of Hughes Net. In my area several new and promising alternatives are readily becoming available.

Perhaps, the FTC, FCC and BBB all need to see complaints on the advertising practices. 1. They are capable of providing a Broadband Experience and refuse to. 2. Their ads go well beyond the puffery exceptions in my opinion. Don't expect miracles, but the more complaints they recieve the more apt they are to do something, normally nothing the consumer will interpert as justice. However if nothing more than causing them to change the ads would prevent more people being victimized by this Company (Hughesnet)

I have a small business and would like to add my two cents to your et blog. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER trust this company. Everyone problem I have had Huhges always has a different answer for. When I cannot get a signal, it is blamed on the weather, or a bad connection, they never take the blame. Then they tell me that I am using up the alloted time/space for downloads, (this is after I returned from vacation and was not on it for a whole week). Every time I called to report the same problem I was given different reasons for the interrupted service, every tech. had a different answer, except they all told me I needed to up-grade my account and I would have no more problems. Like a fool I decided to try the up-grade which would cost me an additional $20. a month and the cost of the new dish. After waiting three weeks for an installer to come out (he was suppose to be here within three days), I finally called and was told that they had the record for the order, but it had never been placed with the installer, ooop's were so sorry. So I had to start the whole process again. I wait another two weeks before the installer finally arrived. When I placed the up-grade order I was told when the new satellite was in place I had to call and cancel the old dish. So I call as I was instructed, AND now they tell me I will have to pay a disconnection fee. This was NEVER mentioned or disclosed when I ordered the up-grade, in either of the two phone converstions that I had when placing the order/orders. We go around and around, that was three months ago and the issue is still not resloved. I want also to mention that after the up-grade I continued having the same problems that I was told I would no longer experience once the up-graded was in place. MORE BS! Now the corker comes tonight......My "hughes webmail" account seems to have disappeared! OOOOOOOP's they forgot to mention that sometimes when you up grade you loose your web mail address, unretrivable.............all your contacts are lost, all your save information, they're so sorry! I was told I could go back and sign up again and they will let me use my lost web address, but all my stored information is gone forever. What a wonderful company to do business with! They're a bunch of snakes and will twist you till they get every bleeding dollar out of your pocket. Real rip off artists! My question is; Is their anyway this company can be brought to heal by a class action suit???? Be smart and stay away from HUGHES,............I am changing companies ASAP, and I advise all hughes.net users to do the same. Sooner or later they will get you! As for the rating, forget it, they don't even deserve a raspberry! (I can't submit this without giving the a them a star............but they sure don't deserve it!!!!

As like most of you I would not give Hughesnet one star if I was not made to do it so I could tell you never never use this company.
I work from home and use the internet for work ie: email and vpn to my company server. My company got a new server so from my past experience with FAP I called two months before the server change and was assured if I upgraded to 375 MB of download I would be all set. Well that was not the case as all. I went over the FAP. I called Hughesnet and tech support just kept repeating that there was nothing they could do for me. I spoke with a manager who assured me he would do everything he could to ensure that I had internet the next day to work really what he he was saying is I am tired of listening to you so I will tell you what you want to hear. When the next day I still had no internet and called back they had given me the wrong case number. The next four people they put on the phone insisted that there was not a single person on the face of the earth that could help me. I was told over and over there was no one in the building above the floor supervisor to speak with and that they could not give me a call back as they were an inbound call center they would not even give me a name to contact. When I asked to speak to someone that could help me I was told to write a letter to their main office? This is not customer support it is blowing smoke at me. I had to take a full day off work because I did not have internet but you bet I was charged full price for the month.

ONly go with HughesNet if you have NO OTHER internet options. I live in an area that doesn't provide DSL and other satellite options would require cutting down several trees. HughesNet required us to install a pole (which meant digging a hole and putting in concrete) because they wouldn't mount the dish on our house. Then installation and cost of the dish ran about $500. After that, it costs about $65 a month for me to get service that costs my friends who live elsewhere $9.99 a month (it's not as fast as DSL, and is marginally faster than dial-up), so is a rip off for the amount of money they charge. You can only download a certain amount (200 MB) per 24-hour period (more if you pay more), which NO ONE told us when we signed up. I only keep the service because I have no other internet options and I need some kind of internet hookup. During peak hours, it can be really slow, and sometimes the satellite goes down. The customer service reps in India have been somewhat helpful, so far, other than always asking me to unplug everything (as if I didn't already try that before calling them). THey don't know anything about Mac computers, so don't even bother calling for help if you have a Mac.

Hughes Net is a SCAM!

I paid them $215 per month for the business plan ($30 of which was for 24-hour tech support on-site)

Connection went down - they wouldn't come out - tech support by phone SUCKS (staffed by functional retards)

I was so pissed off I just cancelled the service and went back to dial-up.

Avoid Hughes or their resellers like they plague. They lie (tell you anything to get you to sign up) and they will NOT honor their contracts.

I'm surprised the FTC allows them to stay in business.

Hughesnet bites the big one! Terrible customer service! Snails move faster than the internet service they proivde. I stuck with them for several years, purchased two receivers (3000 and 6000)and I swear the upgraded service and receiver were slower than the first. I truly feel I was robbed, raped and thrown in a ditch! RUN FAST AND RUN HARD THE OTHER WAY!

I have HughesNET. Tonight I'm reviewing the different comments for a friend who is considering Wild Blue. I originally checked on them and they have a 1.7 out of 138 comments and looking here it's 1.3 out of 38. I'm wondering if 38 people are leaving feedback because of the bad experiences or if there are actually more than that. Wild Blue seems to have more comment. I want to be fair. My aunt has DSL so I'm quite well aware of how fast internet can be. I've used dial up and would never go back. We have cell phones so we cancelled the home phones to be able to afford the Satellite internet payments every month to Hughes net and for the most part (two years into this almost....and we're happy with the service) with the exception of the customer service from India with people we cannot understand. Most of the time they are polite and it is annoying to repeat yourself over and over. We've upgraded too because of FAP problems as there's nothing like wanting to check your email and having NO SERVICE at all and having to wait 24 hours for a reset but we've learned to limit our downloads. They can never tell us how many songs or photos that would mean in our language where we can understand. If you can get DSL go with that but this is way better than dial up. I have no clue about wild blue but it does concern me with just how many wrote in about them.

Reading other posts of bad experiences made me re-live mine. Have been in business for many years, and if I treated my clients as bad as they do, I would have gone under first year. Worst of it is they know it and do not care. Desk people are obviously trained to put you off, not help.
Bottom line is, they do not have the ability to provide the service they charge you for. This is theft. Ripe for class action lawsuit!!

Before I start, the 1 star rating is inaccurate, it should be -10. I have had this service since Jan 08, because at the time, it was the only service I could get and I needed something faster than dial-up. I contacted Hughes Net and they made all kinds of promises about speed. Truth is, the US Mail service is faster. I have to use a VPN in my work to access my Home Office. They promised me this would be no problem. Well guess what, it is. Most days, I cannot get thru it at all, and other days I get thru for a little while and then get kicked off. I have a AT & T wireless card that has been very very useful lately. I have been known to drive 15 miles to town and steal the internet service from one of the local motels just to get some large files uploaded to the Home Office. I have finally gotten a new wireless service in my area with a new tower installed and I can get wireless service that is 250 times faster than this crap of Hughes Net. I am going to take the early termination hit and cancel this service with Hughes Net next week once they install my new wireless service. I would not recommend Hughes Net to anyone. I have called customer service numerous times just like all of the rest of the Hughes Net subscribers and have become so frustrated that I just hang up. I cannot understand the language of the representive if that is what you can call them. They know absolutely nothing. They told me to operate my computer is safe mode !!!! How ridiculous can that be. How many people out there operate their computer in Safe Mode ??? I knew then it was time to hang up. I hope nobody else ever buys Hughes Net.
