02/08/2008 | Wowser, this is a muscular brandy and not a liqueur. It is a pomace brandy. Pomace is the seeds, skins, stalks and whatever is leftover after the wine is fermented from the grapes. It is raw and strong.
Remember that scene in Prizzi's Honor where Angelica Huston is trying to rile up her father against Charlie, played by Nicholson? She keeps working on her father, and finally he has some kind of attack and calls for water. The witch pours him a full glass of grappa. He took a swig and it damn near killed him!
Also in the Godfather, where Robert Duval is waiting to give Brando some bad news, and is having a drink. Brando catches him and asks for a swig of the grappa that Duval is drinking. I think it was the scene after Sonny was gunned down.
I like those strong brandies, but be warned! It is not for all tastes.
