Dial-up is better than nothing at all, and I will have to agree with fit and others on this one. There are some people's budgets that will not allow for the newest in top technology every time something comes out. After all, it seems like something new comes out every week. You'd have to be Donald Trump in order to keep up with everything that's current.

Oh yea, I love my Cricket broad-band stick (dial up speed) for my laptop. Its lightening fast.

*sigh of relief* At least I got high speed...

Damn, I can't even remember the last time I saw a DUM, let alone used one. Had to have been in the late nineties. It was like rolling dice to get a 56k connection.Jesus, I am....nah.

I really don't think I'll ever give up on dial-up. It always has suited me just fine. Sure it can be incredibly slow but it is also cheap and cost effective plus it doesn't slow down rateitall.

Yes, broadband Internet is penetrating everywhere. You cannot go back to dial-up. But, I would keep the dial-up modem just for safety backup.

Dial-ups are very useful for those on a tight budget who still want to be in touch with the modern world. I just recently switched to dsl (at double the price of my $10- per month dial-up) 'cause I wanted to be able to see videos and listen to music at home.

In defense of dial-up ISPs, they are still a fairly diversified bunch, while the only high-speed options seem to consist of corporations like Comcast. The more you have to deal with corporations like Comcast on a daily basis, the more you realize that they are bad for us. So props to dial-up users like James: they have more integrity than I do.

I'm still on dial up, but for 90% of what I do online it's fine. I was going to switch to SpeedNet earlier this year, but after two months of trying to get them to show up and install the stuff, and being charged for a month of service I wasn't even getting, I told them what they could do with their high speed internet and got my money back. I would like to download some songs and not take all day to get three, so I will eventually switch to something faster. I just have other priorities that come first.

My parents and one of my good friends are still on dial up...no cable access where they live. Or DSL...Rural areas in the north east. My friend wanted to open a utube video for me while I was at her house...she opened it and went to clean the kennels. When she came back it was open! (she has about 20 dogs!). And here I sit on a wireless lap top! How ironic is that!

Do you know how long this page would have taken to launch with a dial-up modem. I'm pretty sure I haven't used a dial-up modem in this country in 5 years.

There are such things as cable modems out there.
