Excellent open source LCMS, I used this a great deal to ver 1.63, then the new version (1.8), long-awaited with all sorts of bells, whistles and including web-video conferencing capability required PHP 5 and a flash server (to run video conference).

They now have a hosted (paid) version.

Dokeos is great for education, for groups and for individual training. Easy to set up and easy to customise, and very easy (too easy possibly!) to add material using the in-built ppt conversion.

No built-in e-commerce but learner admin is pretty straightforward, so a separate payment system would be the answer.

If you are already running PHP5 on your server, this is a great choice, if you are not, check your existing set-up - it took me a while to shift other server software before I could run PHP5 to get Dokeos working.

BUT, the need for your own flash server to run the VC, now that's a little privey - hosted may be the only way to go.

Scribe Studio has tons of promise. A flexible platform to out up almost any material, great interactive elements for both one to one and group learning/teaching. Built-in video conferencing is one very good appeal to the platform.

Incredibly easy to set up a lesson, reasonable customisation of the templates and a lot of choice in the way you put material online.

Two things that are a big draw-back for me. Editing the site was horrendously slow. Whether the Internet had a slow period for the month I used it I don't know, but a simple edit (my speeeling!) could take 15 minutes!

Second draw back - price - it's based on user numbers - well, I never know how many people will sign up, so found the limitation on the starter pack too risky, the next plan was just too expensive.

Probably best as an in-company platform.

I am not a huge fan of Moodle, it is well geared to the educational and academic communities and does that very very well.

Many users rave about it, though I find the rigidity of structure doesn't allow the flexibility for interactive training and coaching - excellent for mass students though.

Easy to set up and build, and so long as you are a SCORM fan, you'll find this pretty decent.

An excellent platform, ideal for trainers and consultants who want to easily put material online, control access and have interactivity with learners.

Delightful simple touches include the ease of asking learners for immediate feedback or to take notes during a lesson, which gets stored and the tutor can respond to, comment on and essentially become involved in the learning process.

Very easy to set up payment for courses, soon to have monthly recurring fees available too, and private course options if you need it.

Well priced, with plenty of space to upload content, and a fair bandwith allowance.

A few niggles with ease of communicating en-masse. It is ideal for the one to one discussions, with a simple 'chat' box on screen, but this strength for one-to-one means that larger numbers of learners begin to take more time in support.

A good basis as a social learning community - only if learners actively participate of course, and the platform could use a few more social networking tricks - e.g. more information on profiles - personal blogs and so on.

Incredibly easy to run through the facebook widget - so if facebook is your marketplace - you couldn't do much better than this.

Dojo learning is an learning platform for grown ups.
