As our nations first President, Washington created the modern day American government, initiating the development of the Supreme Court and designating the first three Executive Departments. The President also supported the creation of the Bank of the United States. He signed into law the Bill of Rights in 1789, the first ten amendments to the Constitution. President Washington also boldly put down an Indian uprising in the Northwest Territory and a whiskey tax rebellion in Pennsylvania.
