The criticism of Schwarzenegger being unqualified to hold the office based on his past career is, in my view, elitist specious nonsense. What makes a lawyer, doctor, enterpreneur, farmer, labour leader, housewife etc, any better qualified to hold political office. In fact, a strong case could be made that Schwarzenegger not being a traditional politician is a plus, given the recent track record of that group. Being a pretty face with lots of money is nothing new to politics, it is just that Schwarzenegger is so visible and has been for so long, that it is more evident. There are many retired jocks, news anchors, astronauts, and others who have come to public office with little more than charisma and the ability to raise money. Like it or not, it is and has been a reality of politics in North America for many decades. Whether Schwarzenegger is qualified or not remains to be seen in my view. Hopefully he is, and hopefully he will not turn out to be just another shuck and jive huckster in high office.
