Extremely important, but be sure to consider the sources that you are getting your information from.  Consumer Reports favors foreign brands.  American builds reliable cars as well too.  You just need to do your homework.

Consumer Reports favors cars that pass their rigorous tests. They also compile statistics supplied by owners. There is no reason to believe CR is biased. In fact, a few years ago when I was shopping for a new car, the CR top rated model was a Buick.
