Born October 1, 1924 in Plains, Georgia, James Earl Carter, Jr., a Democrat, was elected President in 1976 after serving as Governor of Georgia. Carter lost his re-election bid in 1980 to Ronald Reagan due to an ailing economy and high unemployment. He retired to Georgia, where he continues to live with wife Rosalynn.
