Lyndon B. Johnson

(1908-1973) 36th President of the United States. As President, Lyndon B. Johnson pursued Civil Rights aggressively. He signed two landmark bills: The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Redoedo

Despite his obvious shortcomings as President, Lyndon B. Johnson unquestionably did more than any other U.S. president to advance the cause of equal rights for all American citizens. Unfortunately, his contributions to that effort are often ignored largely because of his lack of decisive leadership in other policy areas. There is no doubt, however, that LBJ was very decisive and forceful on Civil Rights, and it is probably the only redeeming aspect of his legacy.
