Bill Self was hired by Kansas as head basketball coach on April 21, 2003. Bill Self was hired to replace Roy Williams, who left the position voluntarily to become head coach of the North Carolina Tarheels. Prior to assuming head coach responsibilities for the Kansas Jayhawks, Bill Self had been head coach at the University of Illinois, where he lead the Illini to consecutive Big Ten titles.
