Calgacus (aka Calaich or Calach--"the Swordsman," Pict, late 1st and early 2nd century)

irishgit

The first Scotsman to have a recorded identity. The Roman historian Tacitus described the battle fought by Julius Agricola, where he defeated an army of tall red haired men with long swords and round shields. Calgacus' army was slaughtered in the defeat, and his own fate is uncertain, but his fierce defiance of the Romans: "They make a desert, and they call it peace!" began the long brawl of Scottish history.

Should have read, army was slaughtered. Little evidence, one way or the other what happened to him personally.
