
Athens is the capital city of Greece and has a population of 750,000 residents. During ancient times, Athens was one of the world’s most powerful city-states, and was a great center of learning. Athens is named for the Greek Goddess, Athena, whose Parthenon monuments sits at the Acropolis. Athens was the site of the 1896 summer Olympics, the world’s first modern Olympic contest. The city also hosted the 2004 Summer Olympics and is home to the Temple of Olympian Zeus.
