Sir Francis Bacon (1561-1626)

English philosopher, essayist, courtier, jurist, and statesman. His writings include "The Advancement of Learning" (1605) and "Novum Organum" (1620). Quote: "It is a strange desire, to seek power, and to lose liberty; or to seek power over others, and to lose power over a man's self."

Uncertainty

Sir Francis Bacon practically invented modern scientific thought. Government getting involved with funding science? His idea. Without him, there may have been no scientific revolution. Also, he was probably buddies with Shakespeare, how cool is that?
