First I need to qualify (or unqualify depending on your viewpoint) myself by saying that I am not a Bible scholar by any stretch of the imagination. Second, even though I am Christian there are things about God that I do not understand, but it is not necessary for me to understand everything as it has no real bearing on the way my life is affected by God. With that having been said I'll state my opinion as to why I think Jesus' death was specifically the will of God. As I understand it, in the days of the old testament when the Jews wanted to be forgiven of their sins God required some kind of a blood sacrifice. An animal such as a lamb was often chosen. I believe that God decided that there would be one great sacrifice and it would cover the forgiveness of all sin for everyone from that point forward. That sacrifice was the death of Jesus. For those who are believers in Jesus many comparisons can be made between the innocent animal of the old testament and Jesus who was innocent of sin. (Jesus is often referred to as the lamb of God) So instead of us having to sacrifice an animal when we need to be forgiven, we refer to the sacrifice of Jesus which is sufficient in God's eyes.
