Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) was an unknown during her lifetime, and only published 7 poems while alive. Today, however, Emily Dickinson is considered one of the most accessible American poets of all-time, as well as one of the Nation’s most well known. Dickinson’s poems are defined by their melody and slant rhymes, created via mixture of assonance and dissonance. Other aspects of a Dickinson poem are the dramatic asides, odd capitalizations, and elaborate metaphors.
