Glasgow is Scotland’s largest city. Located in west-central Scotland, on the Clyde River, Glasgow has an estimated population of 612,000. Glasgow was founded by Saint Mungo, a Christian missionary, in the 6th century, and became one of the world’s leading religious and academic centers. During colonial times, Glasgow was used as a major port point to ship American tobacco into Europe. Glasgow is best known for its coal and iron manufacturing, industries that helped the city grow until their decline from the 1960s to the 1980s. By the 1990s Glasgow became Scotland’s music center.
