Founded in the 8th century BC by Greeks, Naples is the largest city in south Italy. Naples has an estimated population of 1 million residents, and is located near Mt. Vesuvius, the volcano responsible for destroying Pompeii in AD 79. Naples is the traditional home of pizza. Naples is home to the Museo Archeologico Nationale Napoli, a museum housing many artifacts from Pompeii. Natives of Naples speak in their own dialect of Neapolitan. Many people from Naples immigrated, creating sections called “Little Italy” in many countries, most famously in America.
