Election 2000 was one of the closest and most controversial elections in US history. Texas Governor George W. Bush (R) was declared the winner, winning 47.9% of the popular vote to Vice President Al Gore's (D) 48.4% and 271 electoral votes to Gore's 266. The election hinged on Florida, where Gore demanded a recount due to Bush's narrow margin of victory in the state. The Supreme Court halted the recount, and Gore conceded on Dec. 13, 2000.
